Good sandwich options - Edit
The vegan sandwiches and fries are the stars here. The seitan “bites” are fried so hard I was worried I would crack a tooth!! Definitely the least-edible seitan wings in the city. The mushroom cutlet sandwich was great, I will come back for that. Everything was extremely over-salted (and I love salty), so it’s either a case of a heavy hand that day or the salting bowls hadn’t been changed that night.

Cons: Plenty of animal products to avoid, Exceedingly salty

Loved it - Edit
I picked this place because I was being accompanied by a non vegan, and I was looking for interesting and creative menu items that would appeal to both of us. This place nailed it.
Read moreFor the month of July, they have a bunch of different hot dog specials every day. They had about 5 or 6 different varieties and all but one was also available in a vegan version. I chose the Seoul dog with kimchi, gochujang mayo, scallions and seaweed sprinkle. It was amazing.
I also had a vegan gyro on homemade pita bread which was also delicious, and larger than I expected.
It was the best meal I've had out in long time. My non vegan friend said the same about her meal, as well.
I'm going to have to try to back there before July is over to try some other hot dog varieties.
The service was friendly, informative and prompt

Decent, not great. RIP old Royal. - Edit
Been here a couple of times since they reopened. I appreciate that they are trying with the vegan options and that they offer quite a few. Overall I would say it’s just OK, not incredible, the food is not as great as the old Royal, but it’s aight. I miss the old Royal. RIP (especially to the greatest juke box of old time, but also most especially to the tempeh club). but alas, everything changes.

Comfort food on point - Edit
Tried the nachos, Cesar salad, Brussels sprouts and the soup of the day. Loved all their vegan options. Also tried their burger, the mushroom patty was really flavorful.

Very good - Edit
The vegan cheesesteak is incredible. It is a little pricey but very worth it.

Delicious! - Edit
Had a vegan cheesesteak here two days in a row. Can’t recommend that sandwich highly enough. Multiple other vegan options on the menu (cheeseburger, club, and the special of vegan fried chicken to name a few) but I didn’t have a chance to try them.

From Brunch to Dinner... It's Love! - Edit
I love Royal Tavern and am down for a trip over here any time of day! From the brunch menu to the lunch and dinner menus, there are a few vegetarian/vegan options worth trying. Both the vegan burger and the vegan cheesesteak are delicious, and the sloppy joe is full of nostalgia and flavor. Get some Old Bay fries on the side! For brunch the vegan scrapple is a solid option, but they have vegan red velvet pancakes if that's your kind of thing (it's not mine, but I know some get stoked on it). It's a tad dark in here, so don't bring your mom without her reading glasses like I did ;)

Vegan Chef - Best Vegan Cheesesteak in Philly - Edit
Royal Tavern is a great vegan find: Scrumptious vegan dishes represented half of the main menu when I ate there with friends today. The burger is beyond incredible - and my carnivorous friend described the award-winning (Best in Philly - 2015) vegan cheesesteak as "spot on." The wait staff is great and there's free street parking. They even have vegan desserts. Highly recommended!

Awesome! - Edit
Fantastic food! Pricey-ish, but you get a lot of food for your money. I could only eat about 1/4 of my tempeh Club and 1/2 the fries. My son got the sloppy Joe and my husband got the philly cheese steak and nobody was disappointed!
