All Hail The Republic

Veganuary at the moment in Dubai does generally feel like a non-event. Yes, there are some incredible plant-based establishments, and yes, there are few tokenistic gestures to the month, but nowhere that seems to really celebrate it fully. Aside from this peach of a place, that is. With their usual menu that is liberally punctuated by vegan offerings, they decided to step it up a gear and lay on a whole brunch to highlight all they do. And what a brunch it was!
As soon as you arrive here, you are struck with the vibrancy of the place, in terms of both the decor and the wonderfully welcoming staff. When it came to the food, with such a varied selection to go at, I was torn as where to start. I eventually decided to kick things off with the chole hummus and tofu bhel; both exquisite. These were then swiftly followed by the remaining, equally excellent starters, the beet bao, the soy kheema quesadillas, and the tofu kallmiri, as well as a couple of trips to the live station for the superb samosa chaat. When it came to the mains, the wonderfulness continued across the board, save for the only slight disappointment of the whole meal in the form of the rather lacklustre and quite bland baked desi melanzane pasta. The standouts in this round were the Aloo gobi adraki and the sensational pearl couscous khichdi. The latter of these would easily have been my favourite dish if it weren’t for the cream-laden vision that lay in wait for dessert. Yes, the fruit salad, the pannacotta and the sorbet were all lovely enough, but they couldn’t hold a candle to the carrot cake: I absolutely demolished it.
A phenomenally enjoyable meal. Needless to say, I will be back.
