Bland vegan options - Edit
I used to like Orphan way back when I was a vegetarian and enjoyed their omelets, but as a vegan the options are bland and overpriced.
Read moreWent recently during the Sacramento Vegan Chef Challenge and was super disappointed. Ordered the tofu rancheros which was just unseasoned tofu chunks on top of bland black beans smashed between two tortillas. It was all covered in red sauce that tasted like it came out of a can and partially destemmed cilantro. The onions were non existent. The best part of the meal was the coffee.
At $17 it was a total waste of money and I wouldn't recommend this place to vegans.

I had had dismal experiences there as well unfortunately. I figured out one good dish though so I don’t stray from that now lol.

Wonderful - Edit
I went during the Sacramento chef challenge and had the tofu rancheros which was surprisingly good. They had a wide variety of coffee blends to try ranging from light to dark. Service was amazing and so was the outdoor ambience. Looking forward to coming back here again.

Good flavors, good staff - Edit
Went to Orphan yesterday, and the soy chorizo scramble was very good. The waiter instantly suggested modifications to it and the Zen breakfast for vegan options. We'll be returning. Seating was not a problem - they retained all.of their pandemic outdoor seating. But parking could be an issue - check the web page for options.

Delicious and Friendly Service! - Edit
I ordered the Papas Loco without cheese and sour cream and added soyrizo! The Arnold Palmer with apricot black tea and lemonade was very refreshing. So delicious and my family enjoyed their omni meals too. Our service was great too! We sat outside and the warmers kept us very warm. 4 stars due to lack of labeling vegan options on the menu, but staff was knowledgeable.

Mixed experiences… - Edit
So based on what I ordered on my recent visit, I’d give this place 4 stars. But if I were to base it on the visit before that, I’d probably give it 1-2 stars. The reason being is that the dishes vary so much depending on what you order. So the first time I can’t remember what I ordered but I subbed the egg for tofu and the tofu was super bland and unseasoned. So while I was grateful for the tofu, it was disappointing. On this most recent visit, I followed the tip from another Happy Cow review and order the the papas locos minus the cheese and sour cream and added soy chorizo and it was super good! So order accordingly lol. Oh and there’s almost always a line/wait for seating.

Fairly average - Edit
For a breakfast place I was shocked they didn’t have an espresso machine. The cold almond milk they served with my coffee had split, carton probably been open for over a week. The tofu on both our dishes was approaching cold, guessing they cooked it first then cooked the remaining components. As others have said, cash only business. They also charge $2.50 per dish to make them vegan.

Great staff, nice options - Edit
Great outdoor seating and dog friendly. Staff is knowledgeable about their vegan offerings. The ingredients are simple and high quality. The folks in charge clearly want to impress their values upon their customers in the form of not having ketchup and only accepting cash. (They have an ATM inside.) These are things I can respect, but not having ketchup is annoying when you’re vegan and they are removing the flavor from other ingredients like cheese and sour cream. The menu is not marked, just know they are willing to sub tofu or soy chorizo where eggs are involved. They offer soy, almond, or oat milk for their tasty hot or iced coffee.

Cons: Only accepts cash, Doesn’t have ketchup , Has to remove rather than substitute ingredients

You get huge portion - Edit
This place has huge portions! I ordered pancakes and the breakfast burrito to split with a friend. Half a burrito was almost too much for me I ended up only having a few bites of pancakes which were supposed to be pumpkin but didn’t look pumpkiny or taste it. They were more like spice pancakes.

Knowledgeable staff, some options - Edit
Went here for breakfast on the way to Lake Tahoe. There didn't seem to be that many options on the menu, and they weren't marked, but when the waiter heard me ask about non-dairy, he asked if I were vegan, and let me know about possible options. He also said they were developing vegan pancakes.

Easy Bruch - Edit
Orphan is a great spot for a relaxed brunch if dining with non vegan/vegetarian friends. Staff is attentive and willing to make substitutions for vegan meals. The menu doesn’t include many designated vegan options so making your own meal is really the way to go. Wish they had tofu!

love this place!! - Edit
I would give Orphan 5 stars but unfortunately Happy Cow only allows that for fully vegan restaurants... many things on their menu can be "veganized", they can substitute tofu for eggs, their rosemary potatoes are vegan and so are their tamales which are to die for! They also have amazing food for any meat eating friends that go with you. The staff is always super friendly and welcoming, just an overall great breakfast spot that you should def check out if you are in the Sacramento area!
