Ancient Mexican

Mayan Cafe is a bustling restaurant in the heart of Louisville’s Butchertown neighborhood. Setting the name of the neighborhood aside, Mayan Cafe provides a traditionalist take on Mexcian cuisine that offers plant-based options to indulge.

The downside being that there are only a few vegan options (more if you are looking for vegetarian selections), but the quality of the food makes up for the choices.

During our visit, we ordered the pumpkin seed dip as an appetizer that offered deep umami flavor that lingered on the tongue long after the bite. It is always nice to have a vegan dessert option, they were happy to oblige. The chocolate cake was thick and held firm, reminiscent of a cheesecake brownie: creamy, tart, and sweet.

Ultimately, Mayan Cafe is a lively spot to stake a claim for dinner. They offer indoor seating, but make sure to check out their back bar outdoor seating. It is well worth an evening for vegan dieters.

Pros: Vegan options , Outdoor seating

Cons: Not entirely vegan

Food was delicious

Nice atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable staff. I’m on the chilly side so happy I brought a jacket. The menu had vegan options and we made our vegetarian burrito vegan. It was delicious. And, the chocolate cake they offered was vegan! I would recommend this restaurant for date night or a special occasion.

Good spot for a nice dinner

Not my usual style, but this was a great option for a nice dinner in Louisville. The cauliflower al pastor was impressive, though I was quite hungry and would have preferred something more protein-forward.

Pros: Nice atmosphere, Upscale cuisine

Cons: Expensive ($25 for cauliflower)

Absolutely not to be missed in Louisville

Some of the best food I have had anywhere and certainly THE best in Louisville. The quality and creativity of the food are excellent. Fresh ingredients, unusual flavor combinations, beautiful presentation and modest prices - what is not to like?

Located in the heart of NuLu, this casual spot is a gem. Lots of veg/vegan options.

My only complaint is that they are not in New York!

Pros: Excellent quality, Creative cuisine, Modest prices

Great place!

Make sure you make a reservation as it is a small and very popular restaurant. Just ask the waiter what the vegan options are, they are knowledgeable. The Lima beans are awesome! I just wish they had a vegan dessert option.
