Indian sweets and snacks shop offers a variety of labelled vegan items for sweet and savoury snacks as well as some curries. Sample selection includes samosa, kachori, jelebi, penda, and ladoo. Open Wed-Sat 09:30-18:00, Sun 09:00-16:00. Closed Mon-Tue.

Huge selection of largely vegan Indian sweets and snacks

In operation for over 40 years, Mahavir’s bill themselves as ‘pure vegetarian’ but most savoury items are vegan bar items with paneer.

They have a wide selection of Indian sweets but I go for the savoury items. There is a massive selection and all of the snacks such as samosas and bhaji are excellent. There are many items you wouldn’t find in a mainstream Indian restaurant and it’s always worth taking a punt on something unfamiliar as each item is first class; some of my favourites include the Dall Kachori and Punjabi samosa.

The essential purchase for me, is the freshly made Bhel Puri. The mix of the crispy puffed rice, sev, onion, potato, tangy tamarind sauce and spices are superb.

I’ve never been disappointed from anything I’ve eaten from Mahavir’s
