Entirely vegan, just secretly!

I am so grateful to the person who added Le Ryad to Happy Cow. I shop at Jean Talon Market at least twice a month and have often gazed at this stall longingly, since I LOVE baklava and similar pastries!

When I told the vendor I had heard online they had vegan baklava, he confirmed that ALL pastries were vegan! No butter or honey as you would expect. This isn’t advertised in their signage. It’s an IYKYK situation, I guess!

Well I’m glad I know. I bought six pieces, three that I chose and three I asked the vendor to recommend. So far I’ve had one of my choice and one of his and both were excellent.

I’m so excited to have an easy vegan baklava option close to me. The only other vegan baklava I’ve had in MTL was either at Sham (which I didn’t like at all) or from Marche 57, which you can only order online (though I love their mixed baklava, I always waste the semolina cake because that isn’t my jam). This place was way better than Sham and maybe not quite as good as Marche 57, but just by a hair, and only because one of the pastries was a little dry. There’s also much more variety available here.

RIP my waistline.

Pick a Vegan pastry and you will be hooked

We were having a coffee at the store just across and saw this store and decided to see if there were any vegan options and surprisingly many pastries are actually vegan.

We started by getting six assorted pastries and baklavas and went to resume our coffee. The first bite in the pistachio pastry and our senses went into an over drive. A pastry like no other we have had. Slight rose essence and we were hooked. We had the second date pastry and we had the same experience. Immediately picked up a few more and we bought them home had them for the next week and each were a masterpiece

If in Montreal, do not miss this store. You will not regret.

Thank you so much for adding this to Happy Cow! I love baklava and had no idea theirs were vegan. I’ve always looked at this stall at Jean Talon Market pretty longingly, assuming it wasn’t for me. The vendor I spoke to confirmed everything is vegan!
