A Hidden Gem for Matcha Lovers - Edit
As someone who considers herself a true matcha lover, I’ve tried a lot of different variations over the years and during this trip. But until this visit, I had never dared to try ceremonial matcha – I always thought it might be too intense or complex. Discovering Kukai felt like the perfect opportunity to finally go for it, and I couldn’t have asked for a better place.
Read moreTo my surprise, my friend, who had barely tried matcha before, confidently ordered the ceremonial matcha along with a matcha latte made with homemade vegan milk (unfortunately, I forgot which kind it was). And let me tell you – it tasted absolutely amazing.
The café itself is very small but beautifully designed – minimalist, modern, and calming. It truly feels like a tiny oasis in the city, and honestly, it’s exactly how I imagine a traditional matcha shop in Japan might be. There’s even a separated tatami-style room where you can sit barefoot on the floor, which adds a peaceful, almost meditative vibe to the entire experience.
There were only a few sweet treats available – just the energy balls were vegan, which was a bit of a shame because the other desserts looked really tempting.
We had the chance to watch the incredibly kind woman behind the counter prepare the matcha in the traditional way, which was both fascinating and beautiful to witness. She was genuinely surprised (and impressed!) that my friend went straight for the ceremonial option with no prior matcha experience, and she kindly asked afterwards what we thought of it. We both really enjoyed it – the taste was rich, earthy, and complex, totally different from a latte. It was almost a meditative experience in itself, drinking it in that calm environment. And the matcha latte? Easily the best I’ve ever had. I still dream about it.
Another thing that stood out to me was the absolutely stunning, vibrant green color of the matcha – you could really see the quality just by looking at it. It wasn’t dull or muddy like in some places, but instead had that bright, almost glowing green that makes your heart skip a beat if you’re into matcha as much as I am.
Also worth mentioning is that Kukai doesn’t just serve matcha – they also sell everything you might need to prepare it yourself at home. From beautifully crafted ceramic bowls to traditional bamboo whisks and scoops, as well as high-quality matcha powder. The whole experience felt thoughtful and authentic, and left me deeply inspired to refine my own matcha ritual at home.
