Cute and Homey - Edit
I went right at opening, they may not open the doors at 11 on the dot, but be patient.

Cute no-frills cafe - Edit
Came for some lunch while in the area and wanted to support a fully vegan business. As others have noted, you’re presented with a sign alongside the menu asking to refrain from using strong scents (due to what sounds like a staff member having an allergy/intolerance). There were two choices of hot food - a grilled soy rice bowl and a curry. The drinks menu is extensive with lots of tea to choose from. The grilled soy was very tasty and the curry flavourful. We shared a purple sweet potato cake to finish. There’s also a few items to buy, such as cat themed gifts (cat chopstick holders, pin badges) and food (we bought some vegan cookies). The owner was friendly and respectful; we wouldn’t hesitate to return.

Take-out / Take Away - Edit
They had limited options for take-out: soy meat and tofu. Both served with rice, raw vegetables, and pickles. They were delicious and simple, but portion was small compared to the high price. That’s why they only received 4 stars.

Rude service! - Edit
Grilled soybean meat and Japanese curry were good. The vegan scone with jam and the hot chocolate were average.

Charm, grace, warmth, and excellence - Edit
This little restaurant offers excellent Japanese food. After sampling some of the top vegan restaurants in Kyoto, including two that were very high-end, I rank this one in the top two in terms of taste and as the top in terms of taste, warmth, and authenticity.
Read moreI have to say I am fed up with people who go to Japan without knowing anything about Japanese cuisine and then leave lukewarm reviews for the most authentically Japanese vegan restaurants. Authentic Japanese food is subtle. It doesn't overwhelm you with spices and flavourings. It may seem "bland" to someone who is eating it for the first time, but as you eat more and more of it, you will grow to appreciate its lightness and its delicate subtleties.
I went to Kitten Company three times during a six-day visit to Kyoto. First, I had black tea and chocolate cake. Then, I had a curry, which was wonderfully Japanese (it had the authentic Japanese curry-rice taste and presentation that I remembered from previous visits to Japan before I was vegan, and it somehow managed this while being authentically Indian as well). I also had scones, which were delightfully light and delicious. The third time, I had a sandwich followed by a soy-meat donburi, which were both excellent.
The owners are lovely, gentle people. They seem to be allergic to chemical scents, and they have signs both in Japanese and in English explaining this and asking guests to refrain from using anything with an artificial scent while in the restaurant. They are not rude about it, just firm. I really appreciated their gentle kindness. This restaurant was the most special place I visited in Kyoto, and I hope to have a chance to go back one day.

Was asked to leave before we ordered because I was wearing perfume - Edit
Don’t even bother with this place. This is the rudest I have been treated in 30 years of travel and no mention of it anywhere. After spending $30 on a cab and it’s 13 degrees. Very bad service

It's generally a good idea to learn about the customs of a country before visiting. Wearing strong perfume is considered bad manners in Japan. Any body scent that others can detect is considered rude and inconsiderate. You are forcing others to smell something they don't necessarily want to smell, something that interferes with the smell of their food. The restaurant has the right to protect its other customers, who presumably also took some trouble to get there.

Organic Café/Restaurant - Edit
This is actually my favourite restaurant in Japan so far. It’s very cozy and sweet and the food is amazing. Of course it’s not as „fancy“ as some Japanese Restaurants I’ve been to, but it’s quite homely and the food tastes homemade and fresh. They also have a few organic foods to buy, like crackers, tea, pasta, vegan milk and some ready made sauce or curry. Also, they have small felt cats made from cat hairs. I absolutely fell in love with them! On some dates a course is offered on making cat hair finger puppets. I wasn’t there for that, but I got a set for it with instructions, which seem to be quite easy to follow.

Cozy cafe and shop - Edit
Stopped in for a little afternoon sweetness on a cold day. Enough hippie vibes to go around. Staff is super sweet and accommodating to English speakers but also complimented me on my broken Japanese. They serve a couple of rice dishes, scones, cakes, and various beverages. I enjoyed the soy milk chai and raw chocolate cake. Also picked up a Fair Trade chocolate bar on my way out. Minimum for credit card is ¥1,000. Restroom and free wifi available.

Sweet little tea house with a menu offering a selection of light meals and drinks. Cute store to check out whilst waiting for food. The owner is lovely and the cafe is in honor of his late cat who passed away in 2020 at the age of 23 🩷

Healthy food, nice owner - Edit
The soy meat bowl was good, I liked the flavouring of the soy meat in particular. And the cat shaped rice is ofc duper cute!! But the bowl wasn't really filling. I missed some kind of soup.
Read moreThe owner is very friendly. He asks customers not to wear any parfum or other strong chemical fragrances and not to use disinfectants. I don't know his reasons, but I like these rules since I'm supporting a toxin-free lifestyle. And especially in restaurants, these compounds can interfere with the food we are eating.

Stopped in for lunch. Sitting for about 10 people. Selection of baked goods and a couple small meals with a large selection of hot and cold, non-alcoholic drinks. All vegan. I ordered the soy meat dish and it came with a choice of salty lemonade or mint tea; I ordered the mint. All was very tasty and priced good.

This place felt like home. Nothing fancy about the style of the place and no over the top food. Just a lovely owner with a love of cats and great cooking abilities! We got the curry and the stir fry with the salty lemonade and the chai tea. We also got the coconut gluten free cake as a treat. All were delicious. There is also a small shop with some vegan foods and cat related items. We bought a cat toy with catnip in.
