so expensive!! (soft-serve a must tho)

The corn dog is amazing but for 10$? We also got the dirty secret-a hamburger that's supposed to taste like a fast food chain--I didn't like it but my husband said it tasted pretty close. The soft serve ice cream is a MUST & it's only 4$. Overall I think the prices are a bit crazy considering it's all plants, but if i get a raise, I'm coming back for that corn dog!

Pros: soft serve!!, great fries, good atmosphere

Cons: pricey

The apps are all awesome! Haven't had anything I wouldn't order again! Even for non-vegans, the chili or quesadilla may be great options.

Hit and Miss

Went on a Saturday night around their peak time - line was long, but moved fairly well, and there always seemed to be some tables open.

We started with the Pretzel - needed more salt. Cheese dip was flavorless, but the mustard was good. My wife had the Chickpea sandwich, which she said was pretty boring - was basically white bread with a chickpea spread. I had the Philly as a salad ("Unbun"). Needed A LOT more seitan - what was there got lost in the quinoa blend. Flavors were good, just unbalanced proportions. We both had fries as a side (crinkle cut) - unsure if they were fresh or from frozen, but thinking the latter.

On the plus side they carried local brands of Kombucha and a Nitro Cold Brew - my wife had the prior, me the latter - and both were great.

Also picked up a couple baked goods for dessert - cookie and some mini-muffins. Cookie was under-baked, and the muffins were okay.

I really wish I liked the place more - it was humming busy with a really diverse crowd - I love to see vegan places like this. Also it's nice and bright inside, a lot of tables, and fairly spread out - despite the crowd, it never felt tight. Has a modern wood/industrial feel.

Pros: Seems very popular with the local crowd, Good local brands of beverages, Laid out well for traffic flow

Cons: Mixed execution on food

enjoyable meal.

I enjoyed the beet rice wrap and my wife had the Asian rice bowl that she thought was good, not great. There was a large line that moved very slow, mostly because the person taking the orders was not very efficient and was also dealing with drinks when there was a large wait staff that could've been helping in the front. They need two people taking orders minimum. This place seems popular so if you're in a hurry go at off hours.

It was okay

The cauliflower bites are super good! I would recommend, but the rest was just okay. I feel like that's where people who don't cook vegan go and think it's super good, but being vegan I felt like I have made a lot better at home and it's not very flavorful.

Completely agree! It's more of a vegan junk food type place for me and I could easily make better options at home for much less.

We love J Selby's!

This restaurant has delicious and fun dishes and the best part is that they are 100% plant-based! We typically order our food to go because the acoustics in the restaurant are not great for having conversations. That would be my only recommendation for J Selby's. Service, food, creativity, taste, etc. are all wonderful!

Pros: 100% Plant Based, Creative menu, Socially responsible

Cons: Acoustics are not ideal for conversation

Trendy vegan restaurant

I came with some friends and I have to say, I was very impressed with their cauliflower hot wings, they were really tasty. Their salads were huge , to share with 3 people at least. They have an option , I can not remember the name, but you pay what you want and they give food away to homeless people.

Pros: tasty food , interesting food options

Cons: a bit noise but I guess it was because it was crow, some of the plates were just too big

a must for vegetarians living in twin cities

Very many things are right. Nice to see a good vegan restaurant in twin cities. Self seating, clean, ambiance, clean open kitchen. Order at the reception register and food is brought to your table.
Community bowl had brown rice, black beans, vegetables and cheese sauce. Fresh.
Solo burger was nicely done and tasty. We had a little problem with salad. Server happily replaced it and offered complimentary dessert for inconvenience. That's good empowered service.
Good raspberry lemonade.
I hope non vegetarians also frequent this restaurant as the food is good. We came for Saturday night dinner and it was nearly full. Quality speaks for itself. It's not a huge menu but there is good variety.

Pros: vega, ambiance, value, service, spirit, clean

Cons: none really.

Wonderful addition to the Twin Cities vegan scene!

I have been to J. Selby's on a number of occasions and each time was met by a friendly and engaging staff, and what's more, incredible vegan food! I love what this place is adding to St. Paul and the entire Twin Cities vegan eats scene. Recommendation - get the buffalo wings. You can thank me later!

Pros: Breadth of tasty totally vegan options, Amazing staff, Fun and friendly atmosphere

Fun, with a great menu

I wish I had ordered something different. I didn't really like the Philly Cheeze Steak, because the roll was soggy, and only toasted on the edges when it should've been well toasted. Everything else (and everyone else's food) was awesome. There was a long line, so we had to wait. But other than the soggy bun (in all fairness, they were REALLY busy) it was good. Great to see community support for this restaurant, and I'm looking forward to eating there again.

Pros: Vegan! Yay, vegan, and popular!

Cons: They're still hitting their stride, imho.

A super new place for the Twin Cities area!

J. Selby's had only been open a month when we went, so I understood they still had some tweaking to do. There was a long line but no menus in the two menu slots, along the line. The young man at the counter was super friendly, but overwhelmed. I met the manager and told her about Happy Cow! The food was delicious and I look forward to hearing about the great success of J. Selby! There was no art on the walls! I was happy to see a Vegan Outreach leaflet.

Pros: friendly, clean, great food

Cons: Lines, disorganization, no art on walls

Fantastic Food and Experience

Some carnivore friends wanted to treat me the vegan to dinner for my birthday so I requested we go to J Selby's which I had just heard about. They agreed, though one asked if he should eat first...

Long story short, all of us were extremely happy with the food, drinks, deserts and atmosphere. The philly, the burgers, the fries, the cauliflower wings appetizer, were amazing. Vegans you can take carnivores to this 109% plant based venue and all walk away satisfied.

Pros: Hebiverous Butcher burgers, Philly to die for, Califlour wings are heaven

Cons: Your Lilly to stand in line for a bit, Wish there was one located in my suburb

Great Food, Long Line

The food was really great, but the line was so long. I definitely agree with some of the other comments saying that it would have been nice to have table service. Despite the awkwardness of the line, the food was really good. I got the biscuits and gravy, and it had just the right amount of kick, and the potatoes on the side were mouthwatering!

I'd originally planned on getting some of the apps listed on the website, but apparently they were only serving brunch when we showed up. Hopefully I'll be able to go back sometimes soon, because I can't wait to try the soft pretzel!

Pros: Yummy gravy, Great potatoes!

Cons: Long line.

YASSSS

THIS PLACE IS SOOO GOOD! Vegan heaven! I ordered kombucha- which they have on tap- which was so, so good. I ordered a pretzel which was GIANT and came with cheeze sauce. I ordered a basket of cauliflower wings- way too much for one person- but again, phenomenal. I also had the beet wrap, which I had to go, and the pickles complimented the rest of the ingredients so so well. I don't know what kind of culinary magic they're whipping up here, but I'm entranced and I can't wait to go back!

good but room for improvement

First stop here I had brunch- super good. Pancakes were really great and a little salty (in a good way!). Atmosphere is nice and bright... They should opt for table service at night IMO cause the line gets long and is awkwardly in the middle of the restaurant?
Second stop, I had desert. Pretty good coffee and an VERY good brownie. Tried some of my mom's carrot cake that she ordered and it was really good.
Third stop, dinner. I wanted the vegan "Big Mac" and had high expectations! The patties are from local Herbiverous Butcher but they are really dry. The sauce was good (like special sauce, thousand island type) and would have made the burger much better had there been an adequate amount. There wasn't enough and when I asked for a side of it, I was declined. Seems kinda silly to me to charge people $15 for vegan burger and fries and not give them a side of the sauce that, in my opinion, makes it worth eating. The bun was good, fries were definitely decent. So many plant based eateries across the world are moving toward using better meat substitutes that aren't all soy and dry/crumbly. Maybe they could opt for the Beyond Burger or something like that. I ordered the carrot cake again for desert and it was different (drier, too many nuts) than the time before.
However, I'll definitely try it again, it's the only vegan place around and it's cute and I want to support it!

Pros: bright friendly atmosphere, good treats

Cons: could have better customer service, dry veggie burger, inconsistent with baked goods

Vegan Holy Grail in the Cities

This place was pretty amazing. They had the best vegan biscuits I've ever had and they have the best biscuits and gravy that you can get in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. The breakfast potatoes were nothing special but the mimosas, which are made with freshly squeezed orange juice, were incredible. The selection of vegan food literally just cannot be beat here. If you only have time to check out one veg place in town, make it this one.

The whole place was clean and bright and the staff were all very friendly and extremely helpful. Heads up, order at the counter and you get a number, then seat yourself. Condiments are up near the register.

Pros: Great Quality, Gender neutral restrooms, Clean and bright

Cons: Busy?, Hard to choose what to order!

So yummmy!

Fully vegan restaurant! Such a lovely place with so many vegan options. I got the Italian bowl which came with loads of fluffy brown rice and vegan Italian sausage. My other half got a mock McDonalds "BigMac" which was super tasty and ginormous. Staff were really nice — looking forward to coming back.

New place; worth a visit or three!

We went 8pm on a Friday night. Crowded and busy, but huge/fresh space and pleasant to sit and visit.
In order of eating--
Tangy fresh lemonade. Good.
Dinner side salad. Average baby lettuce, very spicy-mustardy Maple Mustard dressing, nothing to write home about.
Soft pretzel with mustard and cheeze sauces. Huge. Soft. Maybe glazed with beer? Incredibly good. Great brown mustard. Savory, average cheeze sauce.
Philly sandwich. Nicely sauteed onions and peppers. Good steak texture, but flavor profile akin to breakfast sausage (herbs- sage, rosemary, thyme). Cheeze sauce minimal, so no good squishy gooey experience. Great hoagie bun.
Dirty secret burger. Huge mouthful! Bright complex of flavors with pickles and sauce. Good squishy bite. Beaf patties same flavor profile too much like breakfast sausage. Patties tough but good chew.
Fries. Just frozen crinkle fries, but cooked well and nicely salted.
Moving on to dessert:
Vanilla mint cookie soft serve. Yes. Do it.
Vanilla peanut butter cup soft serve. Eh, good soft serve, but low flavor pbcup

Pros: Not gourmet, but good, fun eats.

Cons: Cheeze sauce needs to be smooth and more flavor
