Zu Had Me At Hello

Time Out Market is easily one of my top destinations in Dubai. If I’m honest – and I always am – my main draw here is usually what is behind the bar, rather than the available eats. However, this is not to disparage what food does lie within, as there are some fantastic comestibles to be found – and this particular purveyor is a case in point.
A new player on the scene, if (like I did) you peruse this company's mission statement, you will find they are proud to offer vegetarian and vegan options, though they are staunchly against the use of imitation meats. A potentially dangerous ethos to hold when trying to cater to a market that has not only become accustomed to some quite fabulous faux-flesh creations but also has been seriously let down by a surfeit of subpar alternatives. With only one, fully plant-based burger on offer, would this bold strategy pay dividends? Yes, it would indeed!
As far as vegetable-forward patties go, this was probably up there with the best that I’ve had – the crispy coating, along with the juicy, flavourful filling, was a highly satisfying combination. It wasn’t just the main component of this dish that shone either; all the constituent elements (the onion jam in particular was exquisite) married wonderfully together to produce an impressive showing.
The sides were no slouches either. The fries, especially when liberally dusted with truffle salt, were exactly the bedfellow that was required, and the ranch dipping sauce was equally excellent.
Safe to say, this won’t be the last time I have this meal. It represented solid value for money and paired perfectly with an ice-cold pint.
