NOT VEGETARIAN

Please be careful. Despite the huge sign on the door saying "vegetarians welcome" and a "vegetarian menu" inside, this place does NOT understand what vegetarian means and they will happily serve you fish-filled dishes without a second thought. Speaking Japanese helps.

They have a "Tanmen" bowl that is fish-free, and tofu.

DASHI is a fish stock used in a lot of Japanese foods.
SAKANA means fish.
TAMAGO is egg.

Most of the dishes on the vegetarian menu contain DASHI and SAKANA, and one contains TAMAGO. Please be careful!

Pros: Good hours, close to attractions, has tofu

Cons: false advertisement

Not as vegetarian-friendly as advertised

Be careful. The clearly marked "Vegetarian" dishes may not be vegetarian at all. The one that we ordered had naruto (fish cake) in it. When asked, the server lady told us straight-faced that it was fish. This made us suspicious that the "vegetarian" noodle soup may also contain fish broth.

We don't speak Japanese so we can't inquire further. But I would recommend avoiding any noodle soup dishes in this restaurant. The yasai yakisoba and yasai yakiudon might still be vegetarian. And the yuba sashimi is safe. But this doesn't make Hippori Dako more vegetarian-friendly than any noodle shop in Japan.
