A Vegan Gem and True Oasis on Crete - Edit
We visited Green Kukunari twice after spending time at Matala Beach, and it is by far the best and most charming restaurant on the entire island of Crete. The owner is incredibly kind and friendly, and both times she treated us to free desserts.

Kuku the cat accompanied us both times, adding to the warm and peaceful atmosphere. In a place (Crete) where animal suffering is unfortunately common, Green Kukunari feels like a small heaven where you can momentarily forget those worries.
Highly recommended for anyone visiting Crete who wants delicious food and a meaningful experience.

opening hours wrong, misleading - Edit
We've been here on a Tuesday at 13:30 to find the place closed.
Read moreGoogle says they're open Tue-Sun 15:00 to 23:00, while their own fb page and happycow claim opening hours 8:00 to 23:00 which is obviously wrong.
I don't see the point in offering 'breakfast' when you open in the afternoon, even in a sleepy cretan village. The owners should take better care of their web appearance since they evidently update their fb page regularly. Patio looked cozy though and the menu seemed interesting...
We were starving after a hike, then drove to another place I luckily had in mind.

The Sweet Crepe was filled with homemade vegan Nutella. The Savory Crepe was topped with hummus (?), mushrooms, and arugula. Both crepes were so good that we returned for two more meals.

The "Scrumbled" Tofu included bell peppers and was served with greens and multi-grain bread. The greens were dry, so I mixed them in with the tasty tofu. The bread was dense, but good.

Fully vegan restaurant with lots of amazing options! Both our dishes were to die for. Maybe a bit on a smaller side because my partner was still a bit hungry after his meal. Lovely tranquil setting. What a pleasant surprise to find a fully vegan spot in such a small town! The food was delicious—we enjoyed a flavorful mushroom dish and lentil curry bowls, along with refreshing homemade lemonade (quite sharp!) and cakes for dessert. The main dishes were outstanding, though the baked cheesecake was a bit on the dry side. The restaurant features a lovely, shaded garden that’s beautifully decorated, making it a charming place to relax. They also cater to families, offering a baby chair and some toys for older children. Our only minor complaint was the slow service; despite being the only customers, we had to ask for assistance when we wanted to order more.

Read moreYou seriously shouldn't come here. I want it completely to myself. This place is like a treasure. It's too good and beautiful ❤️ we could gush about the delicious dishes, the boho romantic enterieur or the charming lady who owns it but instead we highly recommend to come and see for yourself. It's an 11 of 10. Yes, it's expensive compared to other local restaurants but the food is a well-working compensation. Only minus would be the aggressive mosquitoes but that's nobody's fault.

We loved our 2 meals here.... breakfast and dinner on a different day. The food is out of this world beautifully presented and delicious. The recipes are unique and wonderfully surprising. Just order anything:) you won't go wrong. Owner chef, Ziza, creator of everything you see there, is usually around, ready to share her exuberance and love of food and anything you wish to chat about!

Lovely, quiet chillout-area in beautiful Greek style. The food is really delicious. A great variety of food choices. All ingredients are really fresh and put together it’s a taste explosion. Green Kukunari prepares all food ingredients by themself, like dressings, burger patties, buns etc. The piece of cake was quite expensive but wonderful taste and not as sweet as most bakery offerings you buy at other places. Best and most fresh dinner I had at Crete. Go there! It’s definitely worth the visit.

Acabamos en este restaurante debido a que los de Heraklion estaban cerrados y, visto ahora, no pudimos tener más suerte. El sitio es precioso, la chica que lo lleva muy amable y la comida se nota que es casera y está tremendamente rica. Pedimos varios platos para compartir: bol de lentejas y falafel de remolacha con pan casero y de postre tarta de queso y, además, nos invitó a probar el último trozo de brownie que le quedaba y estaba espectacular. I ordered the tofu scramble (super tasty but quite a strong nutritional yeast flavour). I suggested you had some slices of their seeded bread to match it. I also had a coffee with oat milk (was ok) and their lemon tart which was to die for (but like 8€ the slice aie aie aie)! Ended up paying close to 26€ for it all which more like European prices but definitely a high end experience!
