Bad Experience

I try not to leave negative reviews for small local businesses, but our experience at Gnarly Girl just was not great. A few months ago, friends visiting from out of town had seen rave reviews online and wanted to try it one early afternoon. I was not very hungry and was the only vegan in the group, but my friend still asked about options for me. They do offer vegan cheese, vegan sauce, and the dough is vegan, but despite the menu labels, it was still a bit confusing if you had not looked online prior to visiting.

When we asked about the vegan ranch, we got a pretty odd and dismissive comment about how they “no longer sell it because no one likes it unless they’re vegan,” which rubbed us the wrong way. Because of the pricing and the interaction, I decided not to order anything.

My non-vegan friends still ordered, and I will not get into detail since it was not vegan food, but their appetizer came out nearly black from being burnt, and their pizza was raw despite taking quite a while. The wait staff also sort of threw the plates onto the table and rushed us to order despite there being no one else in line—maybe just an accident or unintentional, but again, odd. The restaurant itself was not very clean either. The tables were not wiped down, the floors had pools of water, and there were bugs (which likely was from the open doors, but…still).

With the pricing, unclear vegan options, and overall experience, I do not plan to return. I normally would not review a place when I did not eat the food myself, but considering San Diego has so many vegan options (including vegan pizza options!), I would suggest you save yourself the time and try another shop.

NY style pizza

I didn’t know that you could order a vegan pizza, so I went for the garlic knots which were AMAZING! It’s hard to find that true NY style flavor, but vegan, in San Diego. The menu is accessed by their website/QR code. They have a selection of local beers as well.

I looked at the menu, and despite the large list of vegetarian pizzas, it looks like only 2 pizzas can be made vegan. Were there more when you went there?

Hey I don't exactly remember because I went months ago, but there may not have been more than two. I believe you can customize your own pizza though
