Japanese
Non-veg
Serves meat, vegan options available. Ramen restaurant where the staff understand what vegan means and are willing to make a soup vegan. For example, get the tofu one.

Vegan surprise - Edit
A dedicated vegan menu and a very helpful employee to ask about various content. Great place with a casual atmosphere, and some of the best vegan gyoza I have ever eaten! Do not miss this place if you're in the area.

Awesome food but... - Edit
There is a whole vegan menu. I think their gyouza are the best I've had - super homely and tasty. Their ramen is great too. The only issue was the sign that seemed quite racist against Chinese people (I've attached the photo - you can make up your own mind). This made it hard to give a rating - I would want to give 5 stars if this sign wasn't there. What a shame.

Vegan Menu and Ramen! - Edit
One of the only restaurants the vegan options in the area! Three ramen options and a rice bowl. Portion was good and filling! Staff do not speak English so as others have said, I think the mushroom gyozas from the main menu are vegan but cooked in lard. At the time of going (July 2025), they were not selling vegan gyozas or the vegan set meal.

Can confirm - everything on vegan menu is vegan!! - Edit
Per the other comments we chatted with the staff via google translate. They confirmed EVERYTHING on the vegan menu is indeed vegan and does not use lard. The lard is reserved for fried foods off the vegan menu - for example, the veggie skewers are not vegan. Just order off the vegan menu only, and specify you’re vegan, as there are non-veg versions of the same dishes (dumplings and tofu soup, for example).
Read moreAs per my review - food was okay. I thought the tofu soup was a bit thick (uses cornstarch) but otherwise fine. My partner didn’t like his tantanmen, he said it tasted burnt to him. Gyozas were okay. We got 2 fruit sours, but they tasted very artificial, like food coloring / flavoring, not real fruit, so wouldn’t recommend the drinks.
Overall, not our favorite meal in Japan, but appreciate the clearly marked vegan options in a town with few other options.

Reasonably good vegan ramen - Edit
This place was a lifesaver, as we were in Yudanaka early in the new year and it was a ghost town with very few restaurants and shops open.
Read moreThe menu has 3x clearly labelled vegan ramen, I tried each of them for dinner over 2 nights. The tantanmen was my favourite, but they were all pretty tasty if a little lacking in vegetables. We got there at opening time both nights and the restaurant got very busy, so recommend going early (not sure if they take reservations?).
As a previous reviewer noted, there are additional “vegan” options on another page but it says in small text that the fried items are cooked in lard. A bit annoying when they were so close to being vegan, had they only used vegetable oil 🥲
Pros: very affordable, actually open!, vegan ramen x3
Cons: half the vegan menu cooked in lard

Vegan options, but read the fine print - Edit
The menu has a vegan section: one page for ramen and another for fried dishes. The fried dishes use lard as the oil, so I would not consider them vegan.
Read moreWhat I did have was a very tasty tofu ramen, provided by a friendly staff (note: they do not speak English). I would recommend this place for any vegan visiting the nearby monkeys, just be mindful of the vegan fried dishes part of the menu.

Delicious Ramen and Gyoza - Edit
We went to this restaurant twice in the three days we spent in Yamanouchi. It was really good. There are three different types of ramen, gyoza and a few vegan side dishes. I recommend it.

Amazing food. Mixed menu. Seperate vegan section. Huge variety. Understood my son’s nut allergy. After a very long day we all over ordered massively, enjoying it thoroughly. #Veganuary

Nice ramen! - Edit
Had the vegan shoyu ramen, cold tofu, and the edamame beans. All really nice. Clear vegan menu, so it’s easy to see what your options are. Would recommend if in the area, especially since it’s one of the few vegan options in the area.

Restaurant authentique - Edit

We tried 2 of the vegan ramen and they all were super good! Just make sure that they understood that you ordered the vegan menu, if you just say Tofu ramen they can bring you a non vegan one!

To all garlic lovers - Edit
Prepare yourself and your loved ones - there is A LOT of garlic in one of the ramens. The portion is enormous and comes piping hot. It's not the best ramen I've tried but it's not the worst either.
Read moreThere are still only 3 vegan options on the designated vegan menu although there's always edamame and some tempura.

The saving grace of shibu onsen for vegans! - Edit
For all vegans that have found themselves in the beauty of shibu onsen have no fear fukutora are here to feed you up with some delicious food! I found myself here two days in a row. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The food is unbelievable, the vegan tantanmen seasoned with sesame seeds and spices is stunning with a choice of how spicey you would like it. I had a side sauteed mushrooms to die for! For anyone who's had the pleasure of travelling japan knows how hard it can be to eat vegan so please treat yourself to a meal or two at fukutara!
