A Bit Short(y) Of The Mark

Mexican cuisine, for me, can be a fickle mistress. When it’s done well, it’s the equal of any other; executed poorly, it can be a travesty. Hoping that their promises of authentic street food would ring true, I ventured here with optimism rather than scepticism at the forefront of my mind.
My sanguinity was further bolstered upon arrival, as, aesthetically speaking, it had a lot of promise. The vibrant, kitsch decor, contrasted with the chic outlook from the alfresco dining area, all boded well for – at the very least – a pleasant experience. And yet, come the end of the meal, I found myself in somewhat of a quandary with regard to how to assess the merits of this eatery. Despite not having any real issue with anything I had in terms of flavour and being seriously impressed with levels of freshness, the meal itself seemed to lack cohesion, and I was left with a faint sense of malaise.
Getting things off to an inauspicious start was the guacamole. Kudos have to be given for the fact this was made table-side, but if you’re going to bother asking whether or not I want it spicy, make sure there’s some actual kick in there. Heat wasn’t the only AWOL element; a healthy dose of seasoning wouldn’t have gone amiss, either.
Next up, the vegan “ceviche”. Just about nudging past fine, this zesty concoction ultimately amounted to little more than corn salad, one that failed to spark any real excitement.
When it came to the mushroom tacos, there was definitely a clear step-up in class, though there was one glaring issue. They were undeniably delicious, though to say they were petite in stature would be putting it mildly – I struggled to make them last two bites.
So unsated was I that I actually tacked on the burrito as an additional item once I’d polished off the preceding plates – essentially, I had it for dessert. Though it did provide some of the heft that the overall meal was missing, it wasn’t particularly noteworthy.
Perhaps herein lies the key issue: I didn’t feel as though I got an adequate return on my outlay for what was an ultimately expensive experience considering the absence of nourishing fulfilment. However, even putting my inextinguishable voracity to one side, I still wouldn’t say that this was the finest example of what Mexico has to offer – unless you count the margaritas!
