Wonderful surprise - Edit

Came across this cafe and was very surprised with the amount of vegan choices! You can find pastries, waffles, breakfast bowls and toasts. My favorite was the "Tom" waffle with vanilla ice cream. Staff is adorable.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Cute and cozy atmosphere, Not overpriced

Cozy Vibes, But Matcha Missed the Mark - Edit

I stumbled upon Boxenstopp while walking through Cologne and decided to stop in since I was craving a matcha. The café itself is truly lovely - warm, cozy, and beautifully decorated. If I hadn’t already eaten breakfast, it would’ve been the perfect place to do so. The menu looked great overall, though I personally would’ve loved to see a few more vegan options (that’s me nitpicking at a high level!). The staff were also very friendly and welcoming.
Naturally, I ordered a matcha latte - I’ve kind of made it my mission to test the matcha at every café I visit and judge the place a little by that. Unfortunately, that’s where things went downhill. The color already hinted that the matcha wasn’t of the best quality, and sadly, the taste confirmed it — quite weak and not very balanced. It did look pretty though, topped with flower petals, but while they made for a nice photo, they were bitter and didn’t add much flavor-wise.
I really appreciate when cafés offer a small treat with your drink like a cookie but unfortunately, the one here was made with milk chocolate. I think it’s not too much to ask for a vegetarian café to make these little extras vegan by default, or at least ask when someone orders a plant-based milk.
All in all, my experience was quite mixed. The café itself is charming and worth a visit, but my matcha wasn’t great. Still, I’m definitely open to giving it another try maybe next time with a meal instead of just a drink.
