All Vegan Sushi - Fun to Try - Edit
Overall - a good experience. It was nice inside, a little cramped. Tried 4 things - the crab rangoon (amazing), salmon avocado maki roll (good), oolong lemon apple soda (amazing), and the tuna nigiri (amazing). All the flavors were really well balanced and nothing was overpowering in any one direction - salty, sweet, acidic, etc. A little overpriced, but what you would expect from NYC. Definitely worth a try once while you’re in the city!

not fancy, just expensive - Edit
checking their menu online i formed a wrong impression of this place - a 28$ ramen! a $9 miso soup! this must be a fancy-ish place, i thought. it's really not! which would be good - at the current margins i'd want there to be more simple vegan places than fancy ones, but this one is not priced for what it is - at least as far the items we tried are concerned.
Read morethe food we tried was not impressive at all, especially, again, for the prices. i'd only come back in a pinch and stick with rolls for take out.

Incredible v poached egg 🤯🤩🍜 - Edit
The sushi was pretty good, but the ramen was the star. We took the lunch menu, which was great price wise and this was the best ramen I’ve had in town so far. Everything about it- it was gorgeous, delicious, the textures were there… so much yes. Food alone is 5🌟s!!
Read moreThe cons: our server did seem irritable at first or maybe defensive, letting us know that everything here is vegan (which seemed to imply in tone: so we can go if we have a problem with that). I’m vegan and my sister is not, but we came happy to try and this was deterring to her. I understand people have bad days, but I saw in another review as well that letting people know upfront also turned them away. I wonder what the purpose of this is, as another restaurant we went to also disclosed that they were 100% vegan before we ordered. It is on the menu, but I think we can just let people try or let them ask if they have questions. After all, seafood or steak house restaurants don’t disclose before ordering that all of their food are murdered animals. It seems like it promotes veganism as a taboo somehow; something to be disclosed is incase people are not okay with that. 🤔 I imagine maybe some people get upset after eating and learning that it’s all vegan, but that’s part of their individual process and I don’t think we need to change our behavior or environment to accommodate people’s prejudices.
I want so badly to give 5⭐️, but I want to know why the restaurant enforces this and if they will change that. #Veganuary
Pros: Ramen was 10/10
Cons: Disclosure policy is sus
SoyKal-El
I’ve occasionally heard that “disclosure” with the explanation that some customers don’t know and get upset/demand a refund. Though I also suspect those are usually non-vegan servers hinting that the food is not “normal”

@SoyKal-El, oh wow; that’s an interesting reason to want a refund. It seems unwarranted though, as it is disclosed online and such as well. I think there are ways to disclose this in a positive way though, such as “Welcome to our vegan sushi house!” Maybe something more positive would make the difference. Anyways, thanks for sharing that. It’s certainly interesting to think about.

all customers were told about the restaurant being '100% vegan' during my recent visit, so this must be a matter of policy. it seems like an odd thing to say to me, too, but this might be their chosen way of avoiding to put some of the ingredients in scare quotes, e.g., they list 'salmon', 'caviar', 'chicken', 'egg', 'bacon' as if they were not substitutes. hard to say what puts off a non-vegan walk-in customer more - the announcement or the scare quotes, but hopefully they know what they're doing..

Just not good enough - Edit
Bad service. Felt like our waiter just wanted to go home. She wasn’t really paying attention and had a really bad attitude.
Read moreShe also ruined every change for non-vegans/skepticals to try their sushi by telling everyone that entered that it was an only vegan restaurant which resulted in guests walking right out again 😤🙂↔️ A couple even sat next beside us and spoke nicely about the menu right until she told them it was vegan. They walked right out without hesitation … 💔
They could have had a good experience and maybe that visit would have changed something within them which had happened to others. People, especially the skeptical once need to be aware that food can be amazing without animals. Its your mission and maybe also the most powerful activism you can do

Ok but not worth the price - Edit
The food was ok but I've had better vegan sushi. And when you're paying that much (e.g. $9 for miso soup), is it too much to ask for a table that doesn't wobble or real chopsticks that aren't made of wood?

Highly recommended, mixed result - Edit
I had found Beyond Sushi recommended highly on TikTok. We were just in the city for a layover and I was craving vegan sushi and found SO many videos raving about it. For me, it was a bit of a let down but I think that’s because we have such a stellar vegan sushi restaurant back home. We ordered Five Spice Chicken Dumplings, Charred Avocado Roll, Spicy Mang Roll, and Oshizushi Spicy Salmon.
Read moreChicken Dumpling: I didn’t eat this but my husband said they were good. No real elaboration.
Charred Avocado: I was excited about this one but let down. We have a restaurant at home that does grilled avocado and it is SO good so I had built this up in my mind to be similar. That was my fault because it wasn’t. The avocado wasn’t charred at all and tasted like a very standard avo roll.
Spicy Mang Roll: Our server said this was one of the most popular. It was good and I enjoyed it but again, wasn’t blown away.
Oshizushi: this was, by far, my favorite. Wish I would have just ordered three of these. The lime was a real bright spot and I loved how it mixed with the rest of the flavors.
The service was super quick and our server was very sweet.

Average, but good - Edit
The menu is extensive and very clear. The food was tasty, but nothing particularly awe-inspiring. The mushroom Maki was particularly earthy with the black rice. The peanut wrap was a standout. The spicy tuna was very reminiscent of real tuna (made of tapioca starch!). Just ok, but still very happy to have an all-vegan sushi restaurant nearby!
