The epicurean and cultural pinnacle experience when one tours the culinary capital of Vietnam. - Edit
An evening at An Nhien Garden Vegetarian Cafe is an experience that no matter how long or how far you travel in Vietnam, will likely be the ONE place you just can't get out of your mind.
Read moreWe had the good fortune to meet Nhien who is the co owner with her sister An (thus the name An Nhien which in English sounds like "Onion"). And just like an onion, a meeting with Nhien is one where the complexity of this very special lady is revealed like the peeling of an onion with each layer revealing yet another side of this extraordinary woman.
This property has been in the family for over 460 years!!! The idea of opening up this concept came about gradually and includes an entrance that begins at the grand gates which once entered is like coming into a magical world out of time and space. Whatever worries you may have experienced before entering, just melt away as you are instantly transported to a lush garden, expertly lit with subtle mood lights, gorgeous antiques and stunning artwork by an amazing buddhist Monk. All of this happens before you even get to the restaurant which is comfortably tucked into the back of the property like a lotus flower which seemingly opens just for you.
Unlike most restaurants, the staff here are not just workers, they are emotionally connected to the purpose of this experience and their joy is as real as their commitment to creating an evening that surpasses your expectations.
The food, the presentation, the attention to detail, the whole experience felt much like a Michelin restaurant.. that is if Michelin restaurants offered food that wasn't just a feast for the eyes and a gift to your waiting pallette but, also served with a love from the heart that can not be trained.
There are sites to see in Vietnam and places to go but however you travel in Vietnam, if you want to experience something that will be a priceless gift to remember your whole life, come to An Nhien to immerse yourself in a timeless epicurean adventure that will leave you satiated both in body and soul!
Pros: The Food, The Presentation, The atmosphere

Lovely dinner in tranquil garden - Edit
A lovely restaurant for a fancier meal but still affordable price. The Taste of Huế main course can be adapted to smaller portion if desired. I really liked the rice flour rolls (Bánh nậm) which were delicately seasoned. The fig salad - I was expecting it to taste off the European figs that I had tried before, but the dish was actually more savoury than sweet. The rainbow pearl dessert was a nice finish to the meal.

Incredible food and atmosphere - Edit
An Nhein is my favorite restaurant in Hue. It’s east of the Imperial City, a bit distant from Hue’s center, but the gorgeous courtyard and sculpture garden and pool transports you to a marvelous world.
Read moreThe Bao buns were soft and firm, sweet and sour. Our hotpot had nuanced flavor pallets and diverse vegetables. Great place for a date or a break from the city.

Exquisite - Edit
I chose a package called the Quintessence of Vegan Cooking and it was! We brought fresh ingredients in the Dong Ba market, then l learned how to prepare two dishes, and ate them as part of a delicious lunch. The setting is magnificent, a garden enhanced with sculpture and paintings. The co-owners are focused on positive environmental impacts and were hosting a display of clothing and stalls from micro businesses, in association with Vietnam’s WWF in the day l was there. The menu is glorious for a vegan and they cater for vegetarians too. The tastes are surprising in a good way, a glorious fusion of traditional and contemporary. Innovative and purposeful.

Artful & delicious - Edit
Eating at An Nhien Garden is a peaceful and delicious experience. Wow. All of the food we tried was so good!! Fine dining at its finest.
Read moreWe enjoyed the ginger and orange tea, spring rolls, fried tofu with shiitake, and the hue tray. Everything was delicious, creative, and succulent. The restaurant may be more expensive than other cafes locally but honestly it feels like a steal for the quality and the experience you get with each dish. And for our entire meal we paid roughly $20 USD. (I can only guess how much we could have spent on a similar meal and experience in the states.)
The setting is stunning both during daylight and evening hours. It’s charming and romantic to sit outside under the lanterns, surrounded by nature and art. We did not make a reservation and had no trouble getting a table early though it did get busier as the evening progressed. The staff were all attentive, friendly and kind.
Eating at An Nhien Garden is an experience not to be missed! Highly recommend taking the time to dine and enjoy a delicious meal here.

Best in Hue - Edit
I waited a long time for the opening of this jewel of a vegan/vegetarian restaurant.
Read moreSet in an amazing garden with many sculptures and big trees, the menu offers so many temptations, I just want to try everything.
I ordered a bottle of alkalizing Kangen Water and asked my friend to order sharing dishes for both of us.
The homemade miso soup was one of the best tasting I ever had.
The braised Marinated Hue figs in a caramel used sauce was just beautiful, both in taste and texture.
I am not a big fan of tofu, but after trying their homemade tofu with its accompanying sauce, served in a green clay pot made me reconsider. Amazing taste.
The fig salad with chili sauce was presented very creatively. I felt it was a bit dry and lacking some flavor.
The fresh spring rolls served on a lotus leaf covered tray with a divine peanut sauce are great way to start.
The ambiance and setting of this restaurant amplified the enjoyment of eating here. I really liked that each item has a picture in the menu. Talking with the restaurant owner, I learned all sauces are home made, so no hidden chemicals and msg in the sauces. They even make their own miso, tofu and handpick most of the vegetables from the garden behind the restaurant.
The place has been put together with a lot of love and authentic belief in offering exceptional and healthy food in Hue.
I can’t wait to return and try more of their amazing culinary creations.
