Pizza party 🎉 - Edit
Above Ground RIP was amazing and I miss it dearly. It opened on my birthday during the pandy in the Mission and was a weekly staple for me. But no worry, no cry because now there are AG pop ups at Millennium, iykyk. Amazing pizza, cauliflower wings, sandos, and ice cream! Chef Eric, Alison, and the team are awesome and everything they create is delicious imo. It gets busy here consistently so plan accordingly and know that items will sell out, it's competitive haha. My advice would be arrive as early as possible and order double so you have leftovers the next day. And live a little and try the ice cream, and you'll notice all your troubles melt away. The space is beautiful and it's a great setting for date night or a special occasion!

Yummy pizza - Edit
Above Ground has pretty good food despite some logistical issues. We had a reservation confirmed and arrived on time, but they only had one pizza dough left. So definitely get to their popups as soon as they start, regardless of if you've made a reservation or not. I definitely want to come back to the next popup and hopefully get to try more of the pizza flavors! Service at the Millennium popup was okay, but if you don't get seated at the bar, it will take a long time for them to notice you and check in on your table. Took a long time to get initially seated as well.
Read moreThe vanilla bean, stone fruit, brown sugar, almond cake ice cream made by Ginger Bakes was absolutely incredible, and it was my favorite part of the meal. The Tempeh Sausage pizza was tasty, but I wish it were a larger size. The sandwich had a good flavor and the bun was great.

Fantastic Pizza! - Edit
I have a lot of respect and admiration to Chef Eric & Alison for trying to make Above Ground work at the Mission SF location during the pandemic. They relocated the pizza oven to Millennium for Monday nights only - and continue to serve delicious thin Neopolitan style pizzas.
Read moreI love the dessert pizzas - it's like open-face pie - but a lighter portion. The asparagus & Meyer lemon pizza is outstanding. Don't miss the buffalo cauliflower and the fried oyster mushroom appetizers.
If mixed drinks are your thing - seasonally inspired craft cocktails await as well as local wines and Chef Eric has excellent beer selections. Parking is easier early - be patient and you will find a spot.
Pros: Meyer lemon asparagus pizza, Any pizza with figs and potatoes, Location! Close to Rockridge BART

G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) vegan pizza - Edit
I recently went to Above Ground in the Mission with my friend for dinner. I thought it was the best vegan pizza I have ever had in my life. My friend went on to say that it was the best pizza she had in a longtime. She is vegetarian not vegan.
Read moreI went with the Black Mission Fig and Potato Pizza. It came with Miyoko's cashew mozzarella, smoked onions, black mission figs, fingerling potatoes, arugula, Violife foods feta, balsamic reduction, and black pepper. Very flavorful. The toppings all paired nicely together and as aforementioned was the best vegan pizza I ever had.
My friend went with the New Haven Style Pizza. It came with the Miyoko's cashew mozzarella, tomato-black truffle paste, nori and garlic marinated clamshell and oyster mushrooms and garlic oil. She loved it.
For dessert we split an Eclipse Foods Coconut Based Vanilla Soft Serve with chocolate sauce, almond cacao crumble, and strawberry cava syrup. It was very tasty and superb. Eclipse is a local company based in the Bay Area available at some local natural food stores. I have yet to see yet will keep an eye out for it.
Highly recommend Above Ground for some great vegan pizza in San Francisco. We will be back!
Pros: excellent vegan pizza, superb vegan desserts

Delicious and unique pizza - Edit
Above Ground has delicious and unique pizza. I brought my non vegan friends here and they were impressed too! We had the fries, Buffalo cauliflower, spinach artichoke pizza, mushroom pizza and gem salad. All were delicious!! I had never had fries like that (nacho fries? before because they are not super common vegan. Beers were yummy and service was friendly!

Insanely delicious - Edit
This place is amazing!!! If you are in SF it is a must. They have great creative food. I tried their special jalapeño burger and their green garlic potato pizza. They were both some of the best food I’ve ever had. Also the staff are very sweet. The owner or manager (not sure) gave us free vegan jello shots that they were testing out. Highly recommend this place!

Great food! - Edit
This place has been on my radar before it even opened😜
Read moreMade the trek from Petaluma and are happy we did! Except for parking😳
We split the salad and Buffalo cauliflower. The salad was butter lettuce and that’s my fav. The Buffalo cauliflower could have had more spice but were good as is. I just like spicy stuff.
The unicorn pizza was a hit!
We spilt a chocolate moose. Moose was thick and yummy.
Worth the drive👍🏼

Delicious vegan Mushroom Pizza - Edit
I had their Mushroom Pizza as takeout. Delicious. Very rich topping. The pizza was oval-shapped, which was novel for me. When I got to Above Ground restaurant last Saturday about 6pm, it took me 20 minutes to find a parking space on Mission Street. It's a sketchy area. Inside, I was greeted by Michael, who took my order then my payment and had me wait outside on the sidewalk. 10 minutes later, some fellow came out with the delicious pizza. Yum!

Loved this pizza! - Edit
We tried 4 of their pizzas and 2 appetizers. Loved everything we ate! We tried the buffalo cauliflower and oyster mushroom appetizers. Everything was delicious. My SF sorta-vegan friends that I was visiting will definitely be returning. Thank you for a memorable meal! I look forward to returning someday.

Not very “healthy” but oh so Delicious! - Edit
We ordered delivery from Above Ground and had the Buffalo Cauliflower, Gem Salad, Banh Mi Sandwich, Above Ground Burger, Apple Pie, and two cocktails: Clutch Your Pearls and Mix Tape (NA). We were very pleased with everything we ordered. The Apple Pie pizza was a star, one of the most delicious dessert pizzas ever. The Above Ground Burger was also a star, so much umami and depth of flavor. The cocktails packed a punch, even the NA one! (Meaning it was very flavorful). I wouldn’t call this place “healthy” so wouldn’t personally choose to eat here often because pretty much everything is loaded with salt, oil, and fat, but as a treat, it was DELICIOUS! If you have no concerns about including those things in your diet, then I envy you and hope you eat their food all the time so they stay in business!!

Bangin’ - Edit
I’m looking forward to the day when Above Ground starts dine-in service, but for now, we’ll all hang in there with take-out or delivery only. I really wish that the pizza were a standard, circular size rather than a smaller ellipse; but the BBQ Unicorn Pizza was delicious. We probably over-ordered on the appetizers: three deep-fried dishes is too much for two people. But all three were quite enjoyable anyway: the San Frandisco Fries, Buffalo Cauliflower (with beautiful buffalo sauce and dill ranch), and Millennium Oyster Mushrooms. It felt a little pricey, but I suppose that might just be how the vegan scene in SF is.

Great Vegan Pizza - Edit
My girlfriend and I had the Unicorn BBQ pizza and the Early Girl pizza. The crust was very good and they use the best vegan cheese, Miyoko’s mozzarella. Online ordering was easy and the staff was friendly. Would recommend to anyone who craves vegan pizza. I look forward to trying more things on their menu.

Great pizza and more - Edit
As soon as I heard that Above Ground was coming to the Mission I stalked social media to find more details. I have dreamt about a beer-centric vegan pizza joint being available in SF: Above Ground has brought those dreams to life and more.
Read moreEverything my partner and I have ordered from AG has been stellar. And each time they add a new item to their menu they out do themselves. Some of our favorites are the fried oyster mushrooms (sauce is the bomb), rice crusted tofu sandwich, and the sausage pizza. However, recently we got to try a limited (but hopefully not for long) Buffalo Cauliflower that is easily one of the best we've had.
And though they opened during the 2020 pandemic and haven't been able to do in dining yet (as of this review), I've picked up in person a few times and the space looks very stylish and welcoming. Won't be surprised if there are long waits once in dining becomes an option again.
Please do yourself a favor and order some of these tasty bites and keep our vegan businesses supported!
Pros: Great pizza, Great appetizers
