Small, but delicious - Edit
Entrance is a little hidden. But they have a sign on the sidewalk. Limited seating (6) on the counter.
Read moreVery nice staff. Food was very good, even tough it was a little improvised as the run out of rice: we got spaghetti with dumplings/soy meat and salad. Very good and filling.

Truly special experience - Edit
We had the most amazing experience. Not only was the food amazing (we tried both the dumplings and the fried soy meat), but the staff made everything so special for us. It’s a small space, only about 8-10 seats at the bar, and we chatted with the owner and staff and learned about their lives and had the most lovely convo. It was hands-down out most special dinner during our entire trip.

Fresh and delicious in Gion - Edit
Zirael has a friendly English -speaking chef and assistant, six counter seats and a choice of three lunch options . We ordered the dumpling platter and the fried tofu & mixed veg special. Both came with rice, and heaping servings of salad with a tasty dressing. The veggie salad was super fresh , made with local produce, and sprinkled with crunchy sesame and sunflower seeds.
Read moreThe main dishes were full of flavor and the servers asked about food allergies before preparing the dishes. We had the drink set that included Zirael blend herbal tea and black coffee—both excellent.
The restaurant is easy to find on Higashiyama dori in Gion. Just look for the sign on the busy street front and walk down the short alley to the entrance.
Pros: Fresh and vegan, Relaxed welcoming atmosphere , Good sized portions

Unbelievable - Edit
The food at Zirael was unbelievable! It’s a cozy little shop where you can watch as they make the tastiest food ever.
Read moreWe shared the vege dumplings and fried soy meat - both were out of this world. The dumplings were so flavourful but light, and the soy meat was so crispy yet not an oily mess. Both were served with a beautiful green salad with mixed veggies.
We loved it so much we’re already making plans to make a return during our stay in Kyoto.

The food was amazing and affordable. The people were even greater. I think I ended up spending 2h in there just talking. Kind of hard to find as it is in a really really small backstreet but very quiet for that.

LOOK DOWN THE LITTLE ALLEYWAY!! it's down the little ally, they have a small little sign out on the main road when it's open but it's easy to miss (we did multiple times).
Read moreWe had a very nice meal at Zirael, the staff was wonderfully friendly and chatty, which is great because the place is very small (seats about 8-10 max) and they are right there with you for the meal.
They had three (maybe four?) different options, we had two of them, I had the dumplings and my partner a pumpkin brussel sprout curry. We enjoyed both, and both came with a large helping of local greens which was very much appreciated and tasty.
Pros: nice flavors, friendly staff, greens!

Excellent place for a cozy lunch - Edit
The restaurant is a small place which serves fully vegan dishes. Pasta, dumplings, vegan meat, all served with a delicious salad. The cooks are very friendly and talkative, they will chat with you all the time while preparing the food literally in front of you. If you are looking for a way to spend your lunch break in a relaxed environment, this is your place.

Lovely lunch place - Edit
Just a few steps from Gion centre, slightly hidden maybe, but for a good reason ;). Only 8 seats available, if full, waiting is worth it.
Read moreToday’s menu is 1500¥, one with dumplings 1800¥, drinks for 400¥. Also serves gluten-free pasta and if you order their soy bean coffee, you get and extra drip bag to bring home.
We ordered two meals meantioned first and were not dissapointed. Daily side dish were mixed beans, maybe a bit on the saltier side, but very tasty indeed. Expect lighter meal for very good price.
Mixed-couple owned place, staff is very friendly, English is spoken.
Fully reccomend!

Wonderful restaurant - Edit
My wife (gluten free), son (vegetarian), and I (I'll eat most anything, but try to keep them happy!), found this restaurant on Happy Cow. All three of us loved it. The food was amazing, the fresh Kyoto veggies unbeatable, the ambiance and setting were fun, but the owner/COO (Wada) and the employees were the real treat -- it was so fun talking with them and sharing a laugh. Thanks guys, we would love to visit again when we retune to Kyoto some day! :-)

Lovely food with a simple menu - Edit
They basically only offer a salad with a vegan protein or with gyoza. There are a couple of small side dishes as well but I didn’t try them.
Read moreThe salad was great. Really fresh and the chickpea croquette was fantastic and had a salsa and aioli on the top. Super flavour packed lunch.
I wouldn’t say the portion size is very big as most of it is salad but I felt it was still fairly priced given the quality.

Extremely friendly owner, good food - Edit
Tiny place with just 6 seats at the counter. We didn't have to wait in line though, as there were 2 seats free when we arrived. Food was nice and fresh - more of a light lunch than a filling dinner. We had a chickpea croquette platter and a dumplings platter. Both were good, although we preferred the chickpea one. The owner was extremely talkative and friendly, both asking us many questions and telling about himself and his family :)
