Grateful it's there but needs improvement - Edit
Not enough food, too skimpy on portions. Needs more seasoning. Lovely tortilla chips and salsa. Good prices.

Very pleasant afternoon at El Vegetariano - Edit
El Vegetariano, as others have said, has a homey atmosphere. The food was good and the service was, too.
Read moreIt is the only restaurant we visited in Tulum that automatically brought us a complimentary appetizer of chips and salsa when we ordered two entrées.
Their hibiscus and ginger and their lavender kombucha were both the best we had in Tulum.
The outdoor kitchen is cool.
Pros: nice atmosphere and lovely presentation of food, complimentary appetizer, best kombucha we tried in Tulum
Cons: fairly priced but not cheap

Good food, rude service - Edit
I still don't know how to rate this restaurant, because our experience wasn’t enjoyable at all, while the food itself is really good.
Read moreWe went there at about 8:30PM, their opening times are until 10PM. We were greeted nicely and shown the different places where you can sit. There weren’t many other guests. About one minute after we were given the menu, they wanted to take our order. We asked for more time. We then ordered, and it didn’t take long until they brought the food. About two minutes later, we were asked whether we wanted anything else, dessert or coffee. We didn’t order anything else then, still being occupied with our main dish, and then she brought the bill! Even worse, she came back one minute later to check whether we had already paid! This repeated, and I then asked, whether they had new opening times. I was then told, that they are open until 10PM, but we could even stay longer if we ordered more… Meanwhile, they had also stopped the music!
I really don’t understand how they can be so rude to their guests! If they wanted to close earlier that day, that’s fine, but they should have told us so, so that we could have gone somewhere else! We really didn’t feel welcome at all. The food (chile relleno) was good, but when you are given the impression that they want you to go as quickly as possible, no food is good!
So, from an objective point of view, you can go there, the food is good (4 stars), in general, the atmosphere should be nice as well. But go early – if it is later in the evening you better go somewhere else!

Vegan mexican cuisine option - Edit
Local business owner recommended us this place. Unfortunately we visited other similar restaurant before coming here, so we could compare. Food wasn't bad, but I was not impressed. I tried few vegan mexican cuisines and it was good, but not excellent. Place is quite nice and I was impressed by the kitchen outside at the back of the restaurant. They have friendly staff and authentic atmosphere. Personally I prefer to go to another restaurant with vegan options in Tulum.

The Vegetarian - Edit
My boyfriend took me to Tulum for my birthday and we researched vegan restaurants in Tulum and El Vegetariano came up. The restaurant was quaint kind of like dining at someone's house in Mexico. Food was delicious. Check out my full review here: https://thatjenngirl.com/blog/2148/vegan-in-tulum

They have a delicious OJ.
Read moreWhen you order your meal they will give you chips and salsa (spicy). we ordered the taco which tastes pretty good, they put a sliver of tofu on there which was different than what I've had here. The salad we ordered had a nice dressing. For appetizer we ordered this tomato dip, it had a peculiar taste to it but after a few tries I started to enjoy it.
would return.
Update: OJ was not as good, also I ordered they Stuffed pepper and it was pretty bland. ordered the same salad as most of they menu items have cheese. No vegan cheese but they have tofu.

El Vegetariano - Edit
My husband, son and I ate there two nights ago...It was quite nice. The service was great, the people were friendly and the food was good. Decent sized servings and tasty. My only complaint is that all the cakes and brownies were made with eggs. It would be nice to have a good vegan desert, at least one or two. They had a fruit pudding but I was really in the mood for cake. My son ordered it and then felt bad to send it back after I asked about the eggs...Otherwise a nice restaurant.

ATMOSPHERE: super relaxed, friendly attentive service, extra helpful (they chopped open my fresh coconut I’d been drinking and plated it up w lime and chill powder when I just asked to get at the lush flesh without even blinking)

Fresh cuisine in cozy athmosphere - Edit
I visited the restaurant because of a recommendation of a friend and was not disappointed.
Read moreIt has a very friendly and open athmosphere with an eye for details. It was relocated from the quite busy and loud main street to a calmer area. Which was a good decision. Here you have the chance to enjoy your meal with a good conversation or a coffee with a nice book without being interrupted by traffic noise.
The food is fresh and delicious I had the menu of the day which included a soup and salad and chose a fresh Agua. The food did not only look colourful and tasty, but fulfils the expectation created by the appearance of the dish. The waiting time is short and the staff very attentive. Don't miss the desserts, I can recommend the pastries.
The offer is a mix of typical mexican and international food.
All in all I enjoyed my evening at el vegetariano and will go there if I come to Tulum again.

New location! - Edit
This has a new location a few blocks behind Scotia bank. Very reasonably priced! I got their juice of the day, which was melon and the stuffed pepper which came with rice and steamed veggies. Big portions! Chips and the best salsa I may have ever had are complimentary as well. All for $8 USD

Homestyle Flavor - Edit
Went here twice while in Tulum. Leonardo welcomed us as if we were coming into his own abode. The restaurant actually use to be a lived in residence. Had a few juices that were delicious & flavorful. Mixed very well. The food was delicious Chile Relano favorite dish on the menu. Portion are plenty. The burgers looked good too as I saw them go by on a tray. Nice to be able to walk to from our Airbnb. Looking forward to going back on my next trip.

Fabulous Vegetarian Food - Edit
This is an excellent vegetarian restaurant in Tulum open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My family and I visited in April 2015. My husband is vegan and my children and I are vegetarian. We had a truly delicious dinner at El Vegetariano on our first night in Tulum. The spinach soup was the best soup I have ever tasted. My husband enjoyed his carrot and broccoli soup. Do not miss the homemade pasta noodles - my son loved these and wanted to keep coming back to El Vegetariano! We also recommend the enchiladas with soy meat and homemade sauce and the mushroom veggie burger. The desserts are very different than American vegan desserts; the apple pie was more like a fruitcake in consistency. The drinks are not to be missed - fresh fruit smoothies and coconut water straight from the coconut. The service was attentive and expedient. We wished we had vacationed in Tulum longer so we could have returned to El Vegetariano - it is fabulous.
