My inner vegan fat kid was so excited upon entering Vegan Donut Gelato...she wanted to order all the donuts in the store. Sadly, I can't handle more than one donut (I lost my sugar tooth) so I went with a half dozen (I couldn't help myself!) and my bf ordered an apple fritter.
I immediately took a few bites of all six donuts (like what I used to do with a mixed box of chocolates when I was a kid) AND my bf's apple fritter. Let's just say, these taste like the real deal...if this place was not called "Vegan Donut Gelato" I'd seriously question the employees profusely to confirm the donuts were vegan. The raised donuts with the chocolate toppings and the chocolate covered vanilla pudding filled donut were some of my favorites, with the matcha donut as a close contender.
Vegan Donut Gelato is now my #1 for raised donuts (so sorry Ronald's in Nevada)!

Amazing selection, friendly service and 100% perfect doughnuts 🍩! Will always be making a stop here when we are in the Bay Area. I have tried many vegan doughnut places and this is hands down the best! Don’t consider, just go!

I came here everyday while I was visiting my brother and each donut I had was so amazing! My favorite was the Boston cream and apple fritter. The owner is super sweet and patient. I can’t wait to come again!

We had the blueberry cake donut and Oreo cake donut. Both were truly delicious -- great cakey texture and flavor, sweet but not overwhelmingly sweet. It was cool to see many locals coming in and out -- it was obvious that this was their regular spot. Decor is sparse but who cares if you're just getting donuts.

I was in the area looking for something sweet, and this place sounded great. They had so many different donuts and gelato to choose from. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. Everything I tasted was delicious! I will definitely be coming back!

Great service and great donuts. Located very close to Lake Merritt, so we like to get our donuts to go and eat by the lake on sunny mornings. Nothing beats that experience. So happy to have vegan donuts close by! Very friendly staff, too.

this place is by far the best vegan donut shop in california. they don't rely on gimmicky bs, just old school/classic donuts made vegan.

Read moreUpon entering the staff was incredibly friendly. They were very helpful when it came to deciding what to pick. Even if I didn't love their donuts I would come back and support their business just because of how genuinely kind they were.
Lucky for me, the donuts were also AMAZING. I was so excited to find a place that makes vegan versions of the donuts I remember from my childhood: Nothing overboard or ridiculous, just good ol' donuts with sprinkles and old fashioned donuts.
I definitely recommend stopping by and getting at least a half dozen to bring home!

Nice people, okay doughnuts, waiting for gelato! - Edit
A friendly family-run business in kind of a weird location -- there's one 12-minute parking spot right in front of it so hopefully you can nab that, otherwise you might have to cheat and park in a nearby business' lot. They have a good variety of classic doughnut-shop fare, including bars, twists, cinnamon buns, cake, and raised doughnuts. About $2/each, less if you get a dozen. The gelato will be available starting mid October 2017. Entire shop is vegan.
Read moreTo be completely honest though, I expected better doughnuts -- they were good not great on the day I went. There's tough competition with Pepple's Donut Farm and Timeless nearby, both offering vegan doughnuts as well. I think for me, the gelato will be a bigger draw.
Pros: Affordable, Family run and all vegan
Cons: Location isn't walkable and maybe tricky to park
