Good food

Sitting upstairs was nice. I ordered a meal called European Combo containing three different dishes. They all came on one plate. The pumpkin soup was quite boring, but the vegan pizza was awesome. The salad was quite good. My girlfriend had the burger with lentils patty and did not like it that much but it was okay. All dishes (apart from the pizza) were a bit lacking of flavour so I would recommend them to use more spices.

nice place but bland food

Unfortunately I have to agree with the critical reviews of The Veg. I really wanted to like this nice and friendly place but the food was rather bland and tasteless. The Pad Thai was honedtly the most tasteless pad thai I've eaten in 7 weeks southeast asia and the zucchini wrap was bland as well and the Baked sweet potato didn't taste freshly baked but warmed up. The Drinks (fresh juice and smoothies) were good though and the staff friendly.

Pros: the menu sounds fantastic and the balcony is nice

Cons: bland and not tasty

nice food and staff

Came here twice while in Hanoi and enjoyed the food both times. They didn’t have everything from the menu the first night but on the second night they did. We really liked the apple cake, although it was more a spice/pumpkin cake with cooked apples on the side

Pros: cake

Good vegan option!

I had the mushroom soup and spring rolls. Both were pretty good! Not the best food I’ve ever had but it was a good option and prices are aright. I paid around 150k dong for this.

Disappointed

I feel terrible for leaving a bad review - particularly because it is my first one on here, however it is the main reason I signed up to leave feedback.

I went to The veg last night after reading various good reviews on several websites. Like any restaurant there was a few not so good ones, however I thought I would check it out.

I ordered the mushroom cream soup which was rather bland and was delivered after finishing the main. (Ordered as an appetitizer). I opted for the lentil and red bean gravy with mash, which was heavily flavoured with red wine. Besides from the wine, there wasn’t much other flavour...

My boyfriend had the kofta wraps, which came with ‘chips’ uncooked yet somehow burnt on the outside.

The menu was significantly overpriced for what we received, one of the most expensive since arriving in Vietnam and we were both left unsatisfied and hungry after finishing our food.

I write this review as honestly as possible as I appreciate the restaurant are trying to making a living, however from the culinary experiences we have received over the last 6 days this was by far the worst, and leaves a terrible impression of what food standard you can receive in such a wonderful country.

The venue itself is in a very busy street, which made me feel a little concerned about my bag/purse. The music - extremely loud and quite frankly dreadful. It was enough to make you want to go somewhere else even before ordering.

*** PLEASE listen to the negative reviews listed. They are completely correct and accurate.

Pros: A vegan restaurant

Cons: Loud music, Bland food, Overprices

Great food, good price.

I opted for the Vietnamese combo meal which had a crunchy veg salad, a seaweed and bean soup and vegetable-stuffed tofu in a thick slightly spicy gravy with rice. The food was tasty and dishes went well together. Portion sizes were restrained so you could enjoy the full set. Really enjoyed it and will go back.

Pros: great food, fair price, plenty of choices

Cons: none.

Delivery and it was awesome!!

Did a long day to Ha Long Bay, and didn’t want to go out once we got to the hotel.
Found the Veg on here, and saw they did delivery.
It was fantastic. It was super easy to order, and they came even sooner then they said they would.
We had pad Thai, tofu in chilies and garlic (amazing), tofu and peanut butter sauce (wouldn’t order again) and the mango chai pudding.
Fantastic. Definitely worth trying, and great for delivery!!

Varied Reviews for Various Dishes

Writing this review makes me sad because I like The Veg, but the inconsistent quality between dishes is too much for my tastes. After finding this to be one of the best rated vegan spots in Hanoi, it was my first stop. The first time I was mostly pleased, but the second time proved a bit more challenging.

The space is great, with a tiny outdoor street-facing balcony with two mini tables for two, and several more tables just inside of there.

I'll breakdown my reviews per item tried:

Greek Chickpeas with Toast: sweet, which I found a bit offensive to my palate and didn't make sense within my expectation of Greek food. This dish felt way more Asian then Greek and the titling seems a bit questionable. I feel like this dish might be enjoyed by those who like foods with this flavor profile, but expecting Greek flavor this was a let-down.

Pho Hanoi Vegan: this dish was quite large and featured some great ingredients. Only problem is it was bland. The broth was nearly flavorless. After adding all the herbs to it, it gained a better profile, but still needed help. Strange that it isn't served with a side of spicy sauce like I've seen with so many Vietnamese pho's.

Avocado and Kale Salad: this was hands-down the worst dish at the restaurant. The avocado was not ripe, the pineapple was dry, and the kale was yellowish and unappetizing. Without a single ingredient that shone, this was definitely the worst kale salad I've ever had anywhere.

Lentil & Red Bean in Mushroom Gravy with Potato Mash: this dish was incredible. Everything was perfectly cooked- the flavors were delicious, the mashed potatoes were phenomenal. It is my favorite meal at this restaurant. I'd prefer a slight reduction in saltiness, but it's the one to choose.

CaramelIzed Spinach Pizza: I ordered it without cheese as I am vegan and so my review will be for that one. The pizza was sweet- the caramelized onions must have been caramelized using sugar which did not work for me. The pesto was below the caramelized onions, which cover the entire crust. It was nearly impossible to taste and in my opinion should be moved to the top of the pizza, assuming it is good and provides the pesto kick that it should. The tomatoes on top should be swapped for tomato sauce on the crust- this is supposed to be pizza after all! The crust was quite disappointing as well- more of a pita than a pizza crust. It is served with two side sauces which are both mildly spicy but also sweet.

Lovely Cafe

Dishes here are both local and western and the dishes served are some of the best I have found in Hanoi. Quality food at decent prices. Try the salads or the soup and the juices are great too. Healthy and delicious. I came here a couple of times during my short stay in Hanoi. Particularly appreciate that whilst they are not completely vegan, vegan dishes are marked so you don't have to ask or adapt anything.

Pros: Lots of vegan options which are clearly marked , Cute and cosy place, Great food

Cons: Not all vegan, otherwise would have awarded five

Very nice restaurant.

I went many times as the food was excellent, they are open untill quite late, have good wifi and the owner is super friendly and sharing.
The menu changes every month so not sure if they still have it but the kimchi was marvellous. So were the fresh springrolls.
When in Hanoi it's the place to go!

Pros: Organic food, Open late and good wifi, Lovely owner

Cons: A bit expensive, The cook tends to forget his recipes...lol

Yummy in my tummy!

I had a delicious pad thai and mango juice. I especially enjoyed the mango juice that clearly didn't have any added sugar.
Prices are a little high, but given that all food is organic I can live with it.
Food tastes really great and portions are so big it's hard to finish.
I hope very much to come back, so I can sample some more of their delicious food.

Edit: I can very much recommend taking a seat upstairs to avoid the hassle of sitting in the street.

Pros: Organic (if that's your thing)

Cons: Somewhat expensive due to being organic

Excellent food and service

170928 Thursday 6pm

Food here was absolutely delicious. The best meal we’ve had in a while. We had a scrumptious avocado, walnut and kale salad with kumquat dressing, a delicious hotpot of mushrooms and tofu with tamarind and lemongrass and a little chilli, and a Pho that was fresh and tasty – all for 235,000VND. Service was good and staff understood and spoke English. Highly recommended. Most of the menu is vegan (clearly marked) but there are a small number of dishes with eggs or milk.

Pros: Food excellent, Service very good, Price reasonable

Best veggie restaurant in Old Quarter

Myself and partner spend 8 days in Hanoi. Both veggies and found eating slightly challenging so went to mainly specific veg restaurants and this was our favourite by far. Lovely staff, nice modern atmosphere but with balcony to look into street. Food was so delicious - especially the stuffed tofu!

strange green curry!

Great menu, very excited that restaurant delivers. We ordered a banana flower salad that was passable but the green curry was really not very good. Almost like they made it wrong.
The menu had lots to choose from so maybe we just ordered badly.

Great food nice place

I Nice place to go to for a nicer dinner in Hanoi. Lots of vegan dishes. Loved the fresh springrolls. Friendly staff. Talked to the owner who said that she goes to all the farms to make sure everything is truly organic. Meal for around 100.000dong.
