Wow! Best vegan sushi I’ve ever had! Nothing compares! - Edit
This place is insane! Not only do I love the interiors and style, but the food is incredible. I had the eggplant nigiri and the avocado nigiri. Just the most delicious, mouth watering food! The eggplant is cooked perfectly! All the ingredients are locally sourced and just wowwwww. Tastes out of this world! Highly recommend! I don’t live in SF but if I did I’d be here at least once a week minimum!

Upscale, Modern Vegan Sushi - Edit
I've been looking forward to trying Shizen for so long after going plant-based. One of the hardest things for me to give up was sushi, and looking around for creative/inventive vegan sushi was somewhat challenging. Shizen here really delivered and offered a fantastic vegan experience that reminded me how a bit of creativity can go a long way.
Read moreOur table ordered a round of appetizers and specialty rolls - each coming out in between one another which meant we always had food on the table.
- Garlic Edamame ($7) was super garlicky and I loved it
- Gyoza ($9), pan-fried dumplings with veggies and tofu were fantastic
- Omni Shiitake ($10) was their stuffed mushrooms with omnipork and matcha salt. It was a bit too salty for us but still a great combo
- Dandanmen ($12), a nutty savory noodle dish that held its own
The real shining star were the rolls that we ordered. Each of these could be the name of a drag queen which made it even more amazing.
- Open Invitation ($16), our absolute favorite. Pumpkin tempura with burdock, tofu, tapioca, and an avocado crema. The renkon chip on top made it super Insta worthy and elevated the texture
- Foxy Scarlet ($16), a roll with sweet potato puree, bean curd, and black truffle hummus. Another amazing roll that hits on your flavor palette
- Candlestick ($15), a roll with sea salt lit on fire... no really, its aesthetic and spicy
- Singing Telegram ($15), an amazing roll with asparagus, avocado, fried kale, and Omnipork
Reservations are a must. I made mine a week out at 6:30 in the morning, and there were barely three time slots leftover. Arriving a few minutes prior, we were assured in, seated, had the menu explained, ate, and were out in less than 90 minutes. However, none of it felt rushed, and they really got their system down. Props to them!
Pros: Fantastic dining experience, Creative vegan sushi rolls

Definitely worth a visit - Edit
I was recommended this place by two HappyCow’ers so of course I had to pull up. Reservations are recommended as the place is small. The time I wanted was all booked so I checked everyday leading up to this and luckily found a time at 8:30pm.
Read moreWe arrived at our scheduled time and were seated promptly. We ordered Kaiso salad, Kaarage, spicy garlic miso ramen and another ramen I can’t remember the name of, Philadelphia roll, and Boddy and Soul sushi rolls.
The ramen was good but I wasn’t too impressed by it like I was expecting. The Boddy and Soul rolls were fantastic, though. Possibly some of the best vegan sushi rolls I’ve had I also really enjoyed the Kaarage and the sauce that came with it.
Overall I would definitely visit this place again and focus more on the different sushi rolls. I saw one sushi plate being delivered that was on fire. I would have loved to try that.

Amazing food! - Edit
Went here by myself while in town for a bit and it was a fantastic choice. Got the soy ramen and California rolls - more than enough food to feed 1 (the ramen was quite big!)
Read moreFood was all around very delicious. I sat right at the counter of the sushi bar, which was cool too. I’d definitely check this place out if you’re in town! They definitely make vegan sushi much fancier than just avocado, yam, or cucumber rolls!

10 star rating is needed - Edit
This was the best vegan meal in our 15 years of this life choice, the specialty rolls are unbelievable, they are muting. In awe words are insufficient!
Read moreThe presentation is next level, it felt surreal. The subtleties in textures, flavors and aromas were well thought out and incredibly executed. In everything including in unexpected elements like the Gyoza sauce.
The cuts for the vegetables used and their marinades, every detail. Even in a apparently simple avocado nigiri, the touches, cuts and delivery created an unforgettable experience.
Do ask for the dessert! (and starve yourself before you go for a day or two…)
A big mahalo to the team! what an evening!
Pros: The flavors were above anything, The textures !, The presentation!
Cons: we live far away

so amazing - Edit
Came here while on a trip to San Fransisco. Sushi was my favorite food before going vegan and this place was incredible. We got an avocado roll, tomato nigiri, and the missing piece roll and all were so delicious. My boyfriend also got the shoyu ramen and he was so impressed by everything, and he isn’t vegan. Would highly recommend if you’re in the area. Be sure to make a reservation though, we got there right when they opened and barely got a spot without a reservation.

What else can be said? - Edit
I’ve been vegan for most of my adult life 25 years. This is likely my very favorite all vegan restaurant of all time. There is nothing on this menu that isn’t worth trying. Even the basic rolls are fresh and tasty. The staff is stellar and super accommodating. I’ve eaten here with both vegan and non-vegan friends and every single one has wanted to come back.

Must try if you love sushi! - Edit
This place blew our minds, it was unbelievably delicious. We had the brussels sprouts- which are a must try , along with gyoza and 4 rolls. If you are in the area, I strongly recommend this restaurant! Keep in mind that reservations are required and there is no takeout ( as of time of this review).

Tasty and creative vegan sushi - Edit
This was my first time in San Francisco and I was delightfully surprised at the amount of vegan options they had to offer. 10/10 recommend and I would definitely go back. The sushi was just delicious, unlike some places where the vegan sushi is just bland as all they have in it are raw vegetables. So good!

Everything is so good - Edit
Loved this place! Probably our favorite meal so far in San Francisco. We tried the gyoza (best vegan gyoza I’ve ever had), a few of their nigiris (tomato, mango, eggplant and asparagus), and some special rolls. My favorites were the gyoza and green pickled mango nigiri. My partner loved the candlestick the best but the boddy and soul and secret weapon were also good. Our only complaint was we wish the spicy rolls were spicier.

Top 5 vegan restaurants in SF - Edit
I find myself coming back again and again. I would categorize this as a vegan izakaya since they serve a smattering of various menu options: karaage, katsu, gyoza, ramen, yakisoba, and sushi, to name a few. Everything I've ordered is delicious, and my latest favorite special roll is the Proud Peacock. The Surprise Ending is always fun. And all the non-vegans I bring with me keep asking me when we're going back.

Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had - Edit
My partner and I had luck on our side because we were able to walk in to a open two top. The people next to us tried to book a reservation for three months before they landed a table. But soooo worth it!! I will definitely be booking a reservation next time I’m headed to SF. The staff is amazing and the food is insane. Serious culinary artistry. Can’t want to go back!!
