First vegan spot found in Sri Lanka

The food was lovely, it felt nice to have found a fully vegan place and didn’t need to worry about any cross contamination. Lovely staff who were happy to also help pack me up with a delicious pasta for my journey.

Pros: Fully vegan, Fresh food, Good selection

Lovely vegan smoothie bowl

Had a lovely vegan green smoothie bowl here which was massive! I couldn’t eat it all and they kindly packed it up so I could take it away for later😄Expensive for Kandy but worth it if you want a break from the spicy breakfasts (which I do love but nice to have something different!)

Pros: Vegan smoothie, Plant milk

Cons: Expensive , Not fully vegan which is a shame

Good, pretty western (obviously)

Plenty of options although not always the best at labelling, if more worried I'd ask to ensure vegan. Had two smoothie bowls and two coconut lattes

Pros: Options

Cons: Fairly pricey (because western), Not all vegan despite name, Charges for alt milks

Nice little cafe

We both had the falafel burger which were very tasty and coconut milk lattes. Unfortunately they had run out of soy ice cream.

Smoothies were awesome, didn't like the toast

Avocado smoothie was really really good and fresh. Ordered a beetroot hummus toast which was bad, 80% of it was super thick white bread and didn't like it.

Super friendly staff, good drinks

We stopped just for drinks. It was very nice and the staff was super helpful. One star down just for the prices- it is an expensive place for Sri Lanka.

Poor food, not fully vegan

The staff were friendly but the food was really disappointed. We got the avocado on toast with tofu but it was really bland (no seasoning), only a tiny spread of avocado on processed bread. Didn’t look anything like the avo toast in their Google map pictures with nice sourdough bread. Plus, it’s not fully vegan, they offered dairy milk when they realised they didn’t have enough soy milk to make our coffees (to note, they did give us free iced tea instead which was kind of them). It’s linked with the soul food cafe also in Kandy, with similar menu, but eg. the chocolate brownie at soul food was not vegan, so unfortunately I doubt it is at roots n beans either. Wouldn’t recommend this place sadly, don’t feel they believe in vegan food, rather they are just selling vegan food because they think it’ll attract tourists, without realising what vegan really means.

There are better options in Kandy

Even though everything is plant-based (see menu attached), the food was rather mediocre. We had the chickpea sandwich, which was very dry, and the tomato mushroom pasta left - most literally - a sour taste.

Pros: 100% Plant-based

Cons: Mediocre quality , Relatively expensive

We appreciate your honest feedback. We're surprised to hear that the chickpea sandwich and tomato mushroom pasta didn't meet your standards, especially considering our commitment to plant-based ingredients. We'd love to learn more about your experience, perhaps by contacting you directly? This will help us identify any areas where we can improve.
