Not worth the hype | ちょっとがっかり - Edit
A Michelin Okonomiyaki restaurant in Dotonbori, near Kinryu Ramen (big Chinese dragon monument). Big queue, was already limiting customers to let in by 19:30. The atmosphere was lively and fun, living up to Osakan name. NO VEGAN OPTION, but you can ask them to remove egg from vegetarian option and call it vegan. Saw other comments on Happy Cow that gluten free option can also be turned vegan this way, but it wasn’t possible this time. They cook on one big hot plate, where all the other non-vegan menus are cooked too. To me, the served okonomiyaki seemed smaller than other menus. It didn’t hold well and it just crumbled away (no binder, so makes sense). Maybe nice to visit with non-vegan friends, but not the best place for vegan.

Pros: Good Osakan vibes
Cons: No clear vegan option , Pricey for what you get , Long waiting time

Japanese okonimiyaki - Edit
Interesting experience where they prepare the okonimiyaki on a grill in front of you.
Read moreIf you are sitting at the bar they have a shared grill, so other non vegan food will be cooked very very close.
We were lucky to sit upstairs, where the grills are for 2-4 people and if everyone is vegan is more convenient.
The vegetarian option can easily be made vegan by only removing the eggs.
Careful with the gluten-free version, it can be made vegan if butter and eggs are removed. We asked for it and it seems they didn't understand it, but since they make it in front of you just look out for the butter cubes or egg (visible on top of the vegetable mix).
Might be easier to order only the vegetarian without the egg, but they gluten free tastes different, so I would recommend trying it, paying attention to ingredients used and insisting on no dairy and no egg. They will ask about mayo sauce, mustard and soy. Mayo souce is not vegan.
They were tasty and the experience was cool, but other vegans restaurants offer tastier food and the plus of being relaxed since you don't need to pay attention to which ingredients are being used.

Really yum! - Edit
Had okonomiyaki in Hiroshima and now Osaka and it is definitely my preferred in Osaka! Service was great, no problem getting vegan version made. Huge line out front so just keep that in mind! They do use the same brush for the sauce on veg and meat options so if you have a problem with that, this might not be the place for you! (Fairly!)

Cons: Super long lines!

Cross contamination warning - Edit
I was very disappointed. Shared grill surface. The cook used separate tools to flip the pancake, but she uses the same sauce brush on ALL food so what difference does it make? Stay away if you care about cross contamination.

Cool authentic place - Edit
It’s great to see a truly authentic place offering something for vegans! This place seems like the real deal. You sit at the counter and your okonomiyaki is cooked in front of you. They have one vegan option (listed under “vegetarian” but with a note that it can be made without eggs). Unfortunately the gluten-free version can’t be made Vega.
Read moreThe mustard they put on it is so good you won’t miss the mayo!
A note, though. Your okonomiyaki will be cooked on the same grill as meat-based ones cooked in butter. They scrape it down between customers but don’t wash it. Additionally, if they’re busy there’s a risk of cross-contamination with sauce brushes and spatulas. I was there when it wasn’t busy at all and was able to make sure the spatulas being used hadn’t touched meat *recently* and that they looked clean, but for those who are really grossed out by shared equipment you won’t like this place, especially when it’s hopping.

Pros: Authentic spot with food cooked in front of you, Good okonomiyaki
Cons: Shared equipment might cross-contaminate when busy

Hi! Do you remember what is the actual name on the menu? I tried to looked it up on their website but every description has meat on it. Thanks!

I don’t remember what they called it but there was a small vegetarian section of the physical menu, and it was the only option that said it could be made vegan. It might not be on the website but it is definitely available in the shop.

Best experience and restaurant - Edit
We loved this place. Small and intimate. (8 seats). We didn’t have to wait as we went at 4:30pm. Great service and the food is cooked in front of you. On a rainy day it was perfect. We tried both vegetarian dishes and ordered one more. It’s tasty. Different. And yes your meal is cooked on the same surface as meat dishes but when we travel we look the other way on this. It’s in the Michelin guide and definitely worth a try.

Vegan Okonomiyaki - Edit
Small restaurant in the middle of Dotonbori. Apparently they are a rather renowned restaurant. They serve meat, with some effort one vegetarian dish can be turned into a vegan one. If you are with people that eat meat, it’s a good place, however, there are other vegan restaurants that have more diversity. Food is cooked on the same plate that meat and fish is cooked on. So maybe not the place for everyone.

Solid vegan Okonomiyaki - Edit
This is a great Okonomiyaki place that offers a vegetarian/mushroom Okonomiyaki that can be made vegan by asking for no eggs or bonito (fish flakes) and no mayo when they are serving.
Read moreI only give it 3 instead of 4 because there is an Okonomiyaki place in Kyoto that has a vegan mayo and had a better batter even without the egg (even if Osaka is supposed to have the better Okonomiyaki).
Pros: Speak English and can easily make vegan
Cons: Long wait in line, Only one option on menu

Great little spot in dotonburi - Edit
Please note that the okinomiyaki is cooked in the same area as meat dishes, so avoid if this is not your jam. If you don't mind, the vegetarian options are well cooked and delicious. They know clearly the definitions of vegetarian/vegan and speak English. It has been on the Michelin guide every year since 2016! We had to wait an hour, so book if you can.
Read morePros: Delicious food, Good service
Cons: Long wait, Cooked in the same space as meat dishes, Just 2 options so not a great option for groups
