Nostalgic - Edit
While this can be a bit expensive - and it's definitely not the fish and chip situation you may have had as a kid when you may have got it once a week on the designated take away night - you know what, I think this hits the spot.
Read moreI think you can find a bit of value in here, the deal for 2 actually turns out pretty well. Also, love that they have onion gravy here!
If you do have the funds and want a bit of comfort after a long day of work, or perhaps it's a nice day, or it's a bit dull, this is a good time. It can be a bit hit and miss, but that's fish and chips, and that's life. Stop searching for what you think it ought to be, and try to enjoy it for what it is.

Not good - Edit
I give it 2 stars because of having a full vegan menu, however, it was not good and I really doubt the hygiene of this place. Not even the chips were good.

Changed for the worse - Edit
Used to love this place.. but went there over the weekend and the food wasn't good at all.
Read moreGrilled 'Fresh Vish' looked and tasted like soggy packet mashed potato formed into the shape of a fish fillet..
Salt and Pepper calamari was overcooked... lacking in flavour.. and the accompanying salad wasn't tasty like it used to be.. and it had no dressing..
I don't want to go back.. but I probably will at some point because it used to be so good.
Anyone know if it has changed ownership?
Staff were lovely...

Thanks Tiggy. Brother Bon is amazing. Ate there the other day... and don't really see myself choosing this place over BB again.

Not good - Edit
Not reminiscent of real fish and chips. The “fish” is more of chicken style texture. Onion gravy was average. Also tried a phish burger here and I think it might have been a chickpea base? A bit mushy and not fishy. If you are craving fish style try the lord of the fries phish burger! Much better taste and texture

This was really good, definitely recommend for those who want an oily fish and chip experience exactly like your pre-vegan dayz. I thought the prices were decent and quality was great.

Disappointing - Edit
Travelled across town because I read lots of amazing reviews about this place. Great vegan menu. We ordered vegan cheese burger, vegan dumplings, vegan Greek salad and chips. Everything was really ordinary and pretty tasteless. Giving it 3 stars for the vegan options

Good 👍 - Edit
They have a fully vegan side menu which is very nice. Definitely get the Sakura Prawn. I was a little sad that what is supposed to be the main star (the Vish) was only okay for my taste. I’ve had better vegan fish. Obviously this place is only for you if you enjoy vegan substitute/imitation products.

delish calamari but expensive - Edit
Went there to try their Thai vishcakes during their $5.00 special to celebrate their 5yrs of offering vegan options. They were nice and thick, with a good chunky fishy texture, and pleasing lemongrass flavour.
Read moreAlso got 3 pairs of the crumbed calamari which was delicious as always.
They used to have crumbed scampi on the menu, and that was my all time favourite.
Their aioli is also deliciously heavy on the garlic.
I find it galling that the prices of the vegan options are exactly the same as for actual seafood. With the inherent cruelty and destruction caused by capturing sea life at the forefront of my mind when I come here, I rarely feel like going, as I can get crumbed calamari and prawns elsewhere.
Pros: delish calamari, aioli
Cons: as expensive as actual seafood, feel uncomfortable in a fish and chip shop

Why haven't I been here before? - Edit
I've lived in Northern edge Melbourne for a good while now, and I can't believe I haven't happened upon this place before.
Read moreI'm always looking for even a hint of pretend fish option at fish and chip shops around the world, there's usually f" all. This place excels in options. I love when it's hard to choose. I went with the sea free pack with all kinds of pretend seafood with excellent chips. Big winner. Not too greasy. Good texture. If you're in the mood for a greasy good feast, get in on it.

Fantastic Vegan Seafood - Edit
Would give it 5 stars if it was possible to. The vegan menu is just as big as the non-vegan menu, and super tasty. The vish was so good I had a mini moment of panic where I thought it might be actual fish (it wasn't), because I haven't had such good vegan fish in my life. Potato cakes, chips and fritters were just perfect as well, and the lunch snack pack was a real serving size. Will definitely be eating from here again!

They let us in just before closing which was very nice and I was very impressed by their large vegan menu. They had everything from vegan fish to calamari and oysters. The food was fried and yummy.

Vegan fish and chips. Yum! - Edit
There has clearly been a lot of work put into developing the vegan options at this shop. I had the vegan mixed seafoodless basket and a piece of the 'classic' Vish battered. It was $25 for my food but I ended up taking home almost half so it's not bad value. I didn't need the extra Vish. I was just being greedy since we drove an hour and half to try this place 🙃
Read moreI would go back again if I was in the area but won't go all that way again just for vegan fish and chips alone.
Pros: Heaps of vegan options savory and sweet., Really interesting and tasty mock seafood , Not overly expensive
Cons: Chips were good but not great. , Took quite a while for our order considering only , 2 of us waiting for food.

Amazing selection - Edit
Two types of vegan fish, breaded prawns, battered sakura prawns, wakami stuffed battered mushrooms, chippies, potato cakes, vegan gravy, vegan tartare, vegan crabsticks, facon butty, vegan salt and pepper squid, vegan calamari, two types of vegan dim sims, pumpkin fritters, heavily breaded onion rings, the amazingly named battered 'soyveloy'...
Read moreWe have tried almost all of their vegan options. They also do vegan burgers! They're really reasonably priced, and the food is delicious.
I'd recommend the original Vish rather than the new 'fresh vish' one. The older one is made with a bouncy tasty tofu and the newer one is the same as the Vish cakes, made from chickpea, leek, dill and capers.
The onion rings are hefty and very filling, full of onion and delicious. The sakura prawns and the crab sticks are absolutely delicious. I would also recommend the stuffed mushrooms, and definitely the salt and pepper squid. My partner loooves the soyveloy. Their gravy is always a little different each time you order which I love because it means they're making it fresh with their own recipe.
We always over eat when we order from here as I can never choose what I want from the vast options.
10/10 would definitely recommend. Beautiful food.
Pros: Sooooo many options! , Delicious food, Great prices

picnic perfect - Edit
Everyone knows that in 2020, intimate picnics are where it’s at in Melbourne as the weather warms up. Northcote Fish & Chips is in perfect proximity to All Nations Park for an outdoor dinner on a balmy evening. The vegan calamari and scampy are great. Wasn’t so fond of the vish cake’s mushy texture - I was hoping it’d be more flaky - but the flavour was good. The potato cakes are heavy on the batter with thin sliver of potato in the middle but that’s how you know they’re freshly made! I prefer the pumpkin cakes anyway. Chips are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. The onion rings are the size of donuts and seemed to be battered, then crumbed. That was a bit too much fried crunch, even for me. The mushy peas weren’t actually that mushy, unlike the processed kind, more like smashed peas. They helped cut through the grease with a beer or two.

The fish and chips were delicious. Tastes best when you squeeze the lemon in the fish also with the vegan aioli. Really enjoyed it. I’ll be back.

What a world we live in, where us vegans are now so spoilt we can order vegan fish and chips to the comfort of our own homes. And for a very reasonable price!
