Clearly an anti-thesis to McDonald’s, Charlie’s burgers are juicy and full of flavor, providing a staple experience, but all vegan!

Ironic Mc Donald's is located across the street - Edit
🍔 Foodie Adventure at Mr. Charlie's 🌱
Read moreHey foodies, I've got an exciting vegan food review for you today! We recently had the chance to check out Mr. Charlie's, a vegan restaurant that brings back nostalgic memories of childhood Mc Donald’s meals. Ironically, this location in San Francisco is located right across from an actual McDonald's.
As I approached the restaurant, I was greeted by a playful and thought-provoking sight – a group of cow figures with a sign that read, "Stop staring at me like I'm a piece of meat."
This instantly set the tone for the unique experience that awaited inside. The vibrant red and yellow walls, combined with captivating artwork, created an ambiance that was both inviting and energizing.
At Mr. Charlie's, you're in for a treat that takes you back to your childhood days – but with a compassionate twist. Imagine reliving the joy of devouring a Happy Meal, only this time, it's entirely vegan! They've recreated the classic combo with a single cheeseburger, crispy fries, mouthwatering chicken nuggets, and a soda, all crafted from plant-based ingredients.
Now, let's talk taste. The flavors were fantastic and brought back memories of those carefree meals we all enjoyed as kids. The cheeseburger flavorful, boasting a satisfying texture that could rival its meat-based counterpart. The fries were crispy and addictively delicious, and the chicken nuggets – oh my, they were an absolute delight! Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with savory goodness with several dipping sauce options. We choose Green Sauce and Big Chuck Sauce.
However, no review is complete without addressing a few minor drawbacks. One issue I noticed was the amount of packaging the meals came in. While it's understandable that takeout often requires extra packaging, it would be great if Mr. Charlie's could explore more sustainable options to align with their ethical values. ♻️🌍. Maybe give a deduction if you choose not to have all the packaging?
Another aspect to consider is the beverage choices. While the nostalgic soda option is a nice touch, it would be wonderful to see a broader range of drink selections – perhaps some unique and creative vegan options that complement the meal perfectly. And one more thing, were is our vegan chocolate and vanilla shacks.
All in all, my visit to Mr. Charlie's was a delightful journey down memory lane, with a compassionate twist that aligns with modern values. The vegan versions of classic fast-food favo

Good and funny - Edit
Come for the nostalgia and vegan critique, stay for the tasty burgers. Anyone who ate at McDonalds as a kid will appreciate this place, which serves up satisfying vegan versions of the fast food giant’s smoosh burgers and other items.

I love this place - Edit
I’m obsessed with this place, the fact that it is directly across from a McDonald’s is perfect. The food tastes just like McDonald’s but without the animals harmed! The gimmick is so amusing. I came here twice on my 5 day trip to SF.

Extremely gross - Edit
I don't know if this is what Mc Donald nuggets and fries actually taste like (haven't had those since I was 12), but I don't get how anyone can like this. The only thing that was great were the sauces. This is nasty tasting food, can't be good for you (not talking the normal eating fast food isn't healthy kind of thing).

Pros: Great sauces

McDonald’s but vegan and better - Edit
Ordered the #2 (cheeseburger, nuggs, fries, drink). Food was fresh. He ordered the Big Mac #5. Everything was nearly identical to that other place batter for nuggets, burger makeup and flavor), but better. Fries were just fries.

Location: 5/5. Right across the street from an actual McDonald's, which is hilarious.
Read moreFood: 5/5. I came here with someone newly plant-based, and they said it tastes exactly like McDonald's and satisfies their meat cravings.
Inside: 5/5. This location is way better than the Los Angeles location. To my surprise, there was a ton of seating here. There is none in LA. In SF, you can even dine inside a cartoonishly large frowny meal box.
But why isn't there a bathroom here? You'll have to go somewhere else to use the bathroom..
Cons: No bathroom

Crazy similar to McDonald’s - Edit
Got the frowny meal with cheeseburger and tried all the sauces. Burger/fries were 100% what I remember from McDonald’s, nuggets were 80% there (just a slightly weird flavor imo), sauces were just okay (except pretty yummy chipotle aioli)

If You Miss McDonald’s This is for You. - Edit
I’m shocked how similar to McDonald’s the food here is. The burger is as thin as a McDonald’s burger, usually when I have vegan clones the burger is super thick in comparison. The bun is soft and probably better than McDonald’s. The fries have crispy and floppy and are a similar size to McDonald’s fries. Finally, the nuggets have NAILED the McNugget batter and the nugget faux meat is delicious. The only downside here is it’s VERY expensive. I paid $.77 per sauce for sauces and they were very very small. I recommend doing a meal as it has a burger nuggets and fries.

The nuggets and fries are tasty. The food is cooked straight so it’s hot and fresh when you get it. It’s funny that the place is a McDonalds parody and is located across the street!

Way overpriced - Edit
I detest that Happy Cow doesn't allow us to give 1*star toa vegan place. Just because we're vegan, it shouldn't mean that we accept less quality. Nevertheless, I'll give it 1*star elsewhere. Don't get me wrong. The staff are okay, nothing particularly great, but okay. The service was okay too, but again, nothing great. And even the food tasted okay, again nothing great. However, where the problem rose was the cost and quantity. On the menu it says 2 x Imposible burgers and a cost $9.99. Extremely expensive, but we were starving, so we decided to buy anyway. When we recieved the burgers, they were in fact 2 x QUATERS of a burger. They were extremely thinly sliced impossible burgers into ar least 4. Shockingly expensive and quantity. Will definitely not be supporting here again. Robbery. No wonder it was empty.

Parody of McDonald's turned vegan with some hits and misses - Edit
I recently went to Mr. Charlie's for a meal. Mr. Charlie's is basically vegan fast food similar to McDonald's right down to the red and gold colors of the Golden Arches.
Read moreI am more a beans, rice, tofu, kale, and quinoa kind of guy yet was curious to give Mr. Charlie's a try. They are situated right across the street from McDonald's so that takes gusto to set up shop so close to the business they are doing a parody of in an all vegan way.
I love the Pop art feel of Mr. Charlie's from Andy Warhol-esque images of soup cans and cows with Lady Gaga influence "Stop staring at me like a piece of meat" signs.
I decided to go with the Big Chuck Frowny Meal for $19.99 which is basically a vegan version of a Big Mac with four not chicken nuggets, two dipping sauces, British fries, and a soda. The person who took my order suggested green sauce and the chipotle aioli were his favorites so went with those. I concur both were quite alright hitting the spot.
The Big Chuck was essentially a vegan Big Mac. It was well executed and flavorful. The not chicken nuggets were good going well with the dipping sauces. The British fries were just fine. As far as I know there is no ketchup here which was interesting as could have used some ketchup as a classic condiment.
I didn't care for the soda. I got the Sour Blueberry soda. I am not one for soda. It was basically sparkling water with stevia and organic cane juice so a natural sweetener yet didn't care for it. Water with lemon juice is my go to beverage.
It would have been nice if they had vegan milkshakes.
The prices here are a bit costly yet appreciated the experience. My last year before going vegan 24 years ago before plant based eating became trendy was a Whopper combo meal at Burger King with a strawberry shake. When I first went vegan I would have boca burgers and microwaved baked potatoes on the regular.
I appreciate that all folks who dine here are having vegan food. Apparently much of the food at Mr. Charlie's is organic. They also do good things for social justice including giving folks a second chance aka giving employment to former homeless people and former people that were incarcerated.
One room for improvement would be to add a public restroom otherwise you have to use McDonald's across the street or the Apple store's restroom.
I encourage others to give Mr. Charlie's a try for the experience. I enjoyed my time there. May Mr. Charlie's have much success opening up more stores throughout Turtle Island a

Interesting concept. - Edit
I am not a fan of fast food and haven’t eaten at a McD’s in thirty years so I couldn’t tell you how it measures up, but the food was good for what it is. The location is convenient for downtown (good for a quick bite on the way to the ferry). It did take about 15 min for the food to be prepared, so not super fast if you’re in a hurry.

We tried the double cheeseburger and the chicken. I preferred the chicken personally . The double cheese felt like a real one, too many pickles for me. Wanted to give my kid a taste of mega junk food and we were able to do it vegan. Once was enough.

Vegan fast food - Edit

Who needs happy meals, when there are frowny meals!!!! - Edit
First off I love how this place, is almost right across the street from a Mcdonalds. I had honestly been wanting to visit this place for a while now and it did not disappoint. They food was delicious and you get a lot of food when ordering a meal. You get the burger, vegan nuggets, fries, and a drink. (Recommend the peach soda!!!)
Read moreThe restaurant has such a cute aesthetic, though there's not much seating. Overall the manager and the staff was really nice and they seemed to really want to connect with the customers.
The only downside is its a made to order location, so it will be a minute before your food is ready, but other than that. I found it really fun to tote my frowny meal box with me across the city.
I took my friend here (he's not vegan) and he really liked it. He even said that he'd like to eat here again if possible. So if you're in the area with some non-vegan buddies, I'd definitely recommend adding this to your list of places to visit.
Pros: Delicious Mcdonalds Alternate, Alot of food for the price, Friendly staff
Cons: Made to Order, No public restrooms, Not alot of seating
