Tastyyy - Edit
OI think back to this restaurant whenever I think of my holidays in Chania. The food I had here was super delicious and there were a few options to choose from (not many but you can choose). I had pasta with walnut pesto and I loved it even though I don't usually like pesto much.
Read moreI think this might be considered a bit of a "higher end" restaurant as you are expected to call in to make a reservation before visiting.
Give this place a go if you're in Chania, my experience there was great.
The ouzo here is delicious and 100% worth trying too. 😉

Great service but limited options - Edit
Service was fantastic, the food was great but be warned they no longer have a separate vegan menu. The only main is the risotto (they'll remove the pork), otherwise it's salads with the main component removed. They did have ballava for dessert too (without nice cream)

Pros: Gute Weinkarte
Cons: Wenig vegane Auswahl , Schlechter Service

Charming location - Edit
The food was nice, but nothing to write home about. The restaurant itself was very beautiful and romantic. I would recommend to go here for some wine and dessert with your better half if you’re feeling romantic.

Surprise find! - Edit
We stumbled upon Mones by mistake and are so happy we found it! They have a separate vegan menu with some good options. They don't have so many entrees but the chocolate mousse was wonderful. The location is also really nice, definitely recommend for lunch or dinner.

Not as good as expected - Edit
Really nice place, nice people and good wine but the food is not really tasty, a little bit simple i think... Exept the chocolate mousse which is really good. A little bit expensive to.

Delicious dinner - Edit
I was pleased with my dinner here, but I would probably not attempt a vegan breakfast here. The restaurant itself is gorgeous and the wine was excellent. I ordered the boiled greens which was actually a cold dish served with a tasty dressing and rustic bread. For an entree I got the vegetable risotto with olive oil and basil and was pleasantly surprised. I would eat here again!
Read moreThe separate "vegan" menu is very nice but it really should be labeled vegetarian with a symbol denoting which dishes are or can be made vegan, since the pesto does have cheese in it and the dessert comes with honey and ice cream, but at least they are trying!
Normally I would give this place a 3 star but I tend to add an extra star for places in Crete that are making the effort to accommodate vegans and do provide delicious options (as few as there may be).
Pros: tasty, beautiful ambience, friendly staff
Cons: some items mislabeled vegan, few vegan options (but not bad for Crete)

Gorgeous space, Ambience, Vegan Options - Edit
Mones is located on a narrow cobblestone street in Chania. It is off the beaten path, and it is connected to a hotel that is a renovated monastery. The space is stunning.
Read moreI was so happy to see that they had a vegan menu. I asked about the pesto (cheese?) and the server went to the kitchen to find out and returned advising that yes, the pesto did have cheese. They made a pasta for me with a vegan marinara sauce.
Even though there was a mistake on the vegan menu, I applaud them for making the effort to create a "vegan" menu. If it's a learning experience for them, I'm glad to help. When traveling to places where veganism is still not common, I put the burden on myself to ask questions - does the pesto have cheese? does the pasta have eggs? is there yogurt in the sauce? is there mayonnaise in the dressing? Etc.
Pros: "Vegan" menu, Ambience, Accommodating staff
Cons: Mistake on vegan menu

Small and expensive breakfast - Edit
Based on the description on Happy Cow we went to Mones for breakfast assuming they would know what vegan meant. There was only one breakfast option the waiter was able to recommend to us, so that's what we went with. The breakfast that was brought to us contained honey (for toast) and biscuits I very much suspected were not vegan and as I confirmed with the waiter (who consulted the kitchen) they were not really able to tell, but suspected at least the others probably contained egg. The actual vegan items of the breakfast contained, orange juice, a small bowl of fruit, another of plain ground dry oats, some coconut milk (for the oats), a few slices of toast, cucumber cubes, tomatoes, olives, olive oil, couple of small dishes of jam. The price was 14€ tip and we left the place hungry. Perhaps they have nicer options and more knowledgeable staff at dinner, but for breakfast this place was a flop.

Cons: We were served non-vegan items, Expensive, Small portion
