Very good Cao Lao! - Edit
Just in case you don’t know already, Cao Lao is Hội An noodles.
Read moreSome good crispy ‘pork’ on top, good noodles, tasty tofu, the mushrooms were a little too chunky and chewy and the Thai basil (I think that’s what it is) is so strong (it’s very popular here) but besides that it was a great dish. Very good mango smoothie too.

Unique and fresh - Edit
So far this has been the best vegan food we’ve had in Vietnam, clearly marked on the menu what is veggie and what is vegan, menu is huge so we just asked for recommendations, we had the tofu skin salad, fresh spring rolls, stuffed tofu and mushrooms, the mains were so different and unlike anything we’ve eaten in Vietnam so far and delicious. Everything gets bought out when it’s ready. Really great food, we’ll be back for seconds.

best part of the family - Edit
it’s confusing with 3 branches of this family owned restaurant. i like the chef best here. the signature dishes grilled/steamed in banana leaf are exceptional. a great menu of choices and fresh ingredients. i would like the portions larger but I’m greedy‼️this location is fantastic it’s still in the middle of town but down a winding side street worth the effort‼️❤️👍

I ate here a few times. The tofu with passion fruit and the greens with garlic were delicious.

Ok food, long wait - Edit
We both ordered the braised tofu noodle clay pots which were tasty enough, but we waited around 50 mins for it to come despite the restaurant not being very busy. Staff were not that friendly either.

Excellent veggie/vegan cooking class - Edit
Cooking class:
Read moreThis is one of our favourite memories from our Vietnam Trip and whilst sadly undersubscribed, meant that we had it to ourselves.
It starts with a cycle to Tra Que vegetable village where we got a tour of the herbs and other produce that are popular in Vietnam.
We then went to a market - this was a bit of a culture shock, with many open air meat counters and live fish but good to experience how Hoi An residents go about their daily lives. We were also give a few local vegan favourites so would advise you skip breakfast!
The cooking class itself features six dishes and each were perfectly selected given they can be made in other parts of the world - we were also sent the recipes after via email. Our host was attentive and a good teacher and the setting (upstairs of Minh Hien 1) was a nice one for lunch.
Minh Hien 1:
The evening meal we had at Minh Hien was probably a 4/5 - food is great but missing the standouts we had at other restaurants.
Minh Hien 3:
We had the Banh Mi here and was really tasty and the drinks at all 3 restaurants are very cheap (20k VND for a beer), as compared with others where there is a bit of a mark-up.

Great food, mind the maze - Edit
First, mind that the restaurant can be hard to find. I followed the signs and the reviews of others and found it the first time, if you don't find it at first keep trying!
Read moreBecause secondly, the food is amazing here. I had a wonton soup here and it was fresh, tasty and healthy. And not expensive.
I would have stayed longer, but there was one annoying musquito here, but I would visit here again!
Pros: Great food and menu , Affordable
Cons: Hard to find

Best of Hoi An - local combo - Edit
Minh Hien is not-to-be-missed. While frequented more by tourists than locals, the food is very much regional specialties bursting with different flavors.
Read moreThis place is so good and such a good value, we ate here twice. Highly recommend the white rose combo—good for 2-3 people. My partner and I had different favorites, and for me they were the noodles and soup.

Worth venturing out of the old town for - Edit
We've had a lot of good food already in Hoi An and this was no different. It was a little hard to find - as other reviewers have said, it's best to approach this restaurant from the South as the path to it from the East doesn't actually seem to reach it. I've added an arrow to the map in the picture - follow this and you should find it.
Read moreWe had the wonton soup, clay pot tofu and pumpkin with peanuts, with a couple of portions of rice. Everything was really nice, and a bit different to things we'd had so far which was refreshing. The pumpkin was especially good (maybe as a side or sharer) and was perfectly fudgey.
It's a slightly informal setting, but felt good to get out of the very touristy old town.

Nice tofu dishes - Edit
We ate here twice and tried a few nice dishes, including pho, Vietnamese pancakes, and tofu prepared different ways. The food was nothing super special but tasty enough and decent value for money. I liked the puffed tofu, braised and served in a clay pot, as well as the tofu skin they used in their take on ”chicken rice”. We found the pancakes incredibly oily to the point of being sickly, but we’ve come to expect that with bánh xèo. They make a very yummy coconut coffee, with thick frozen coconut milk making it almost like a dessert.
Read moreThe restaurant has an interesting interior, with bookshelves lining the walls and tabletops covered in pictures, postcards, handwritten notes and other memorabilia visible through the glass. Some of the décor contained ethical vegan messaging, which was nice to see but also a little frustrating considering this restaurant still sells animal products.
Pros: Interesting interior 📚, Nice tofu 😋
Cons: Too oily 🤢, Not vegan 👎

High hopes but underwhelmed - Edit
It was just alright really. Service was slow despite it being pretty empty. I got the tasting of the local region platter. White rose was excellent. I dont even know how to describe it; it's like an open dumpling with vegan sausage I think it was. Could've eaten two dozen of them. The spring rolls were greasy and some of them burnt. Wontons alright, had a little salad on top. Was really looking forward to the cao lau but was lacking a punch. Loved the crispy bits of what I guess are flattened rice noodles, rather than tofu skin. Ate every morsel but that doesnt really say much as I never leave food. Staff friendly enough but had to get up to get my own menu and then again to pay after asking and waiting ages. Also had a kid running around squirting and throwing water everywhere, including on me. Also domt follow Google maps as it takes you down a dingy alley where there's what looks to be a sweatshop. Enter on street to the south not east.

Literally: Hidden Gem :-) - Edit
The puzzle is solved. There are 3 different locations in total and one of them is actually called Minh Kien, the other Minh Hien. Very confusing. Also because Google Maps was also directing us to wrong locations on the map! All 3 locations have the same menu. It is definitely worth to visit one of these places. (See picture for all adresses). We ate at 2 locations two different days (minh kien ánd minh hien) and it was both times amazing! This vegan food experience blew us away. Honestly so good. We wished we stayed longer to do a cooking class here, or eat all of the options on the menu😄Go and find these hidden gems! You will not be dissapointed.

Great dinner but please correct the name Happy Cow, it’s Minh Hien… - Edit
After spending a first evening at the wonderful night market and trying quite e few street food dishes (they are not that many…), we decided for the second night to look for a nice Vietnamese vegetarian restaurant. A good star brought us to minh Hien, a family owned restaurant a little outside the town center, but worth the 10 minutes walk. Simple but very efficient, the dishes have been created by the mom and her son Huy is helping with a few friends considered as family. Delicious and varied dishes who will convince non vegetarian people (like me - my wife is) that a nice, tasteful and surprising meal doesn’t need meat or fish! Altogether, i decided to give 5 stars. We travel and love to eat, and try many kind of restaurants and foods, but I think that not only super dooper Michelin starred restaurants deserved a nice review, i think that you can give a five star comment if your expectations are met or surpassed and if the food is prepared with care and love. Well this is the case here. So don’t hesitate, it’s a good address, with good food and good people. What els do you need?
