Bad food and includes dashi

I'm really not one to usually leave bad reviews but I ate at this restaurant last night and had the curry. It was so gloopy and tastless I found myself closing my eyes to avoid looking at it and covering it in soy sauce. We had to ask about an allergy so also checked the ingredients and they confirmed they put Dashi (made from fish) in all the dishes so I think there may have been a miscommunication for all the other reviewers here.
I always finish my food but I couldn't here as I found it so disgusting. I felt very nausious afterwards and could only bring myself to write this after a day or so as the thought of it honestly made me feel a bit ill.
Perhaps we had a particularly bad experience as I can see so many others did enjoy it, but my experience was very poor and I don't think it is vegetarian either.

Cons: Dashi in everything, Tasteless food, Gloopy curry

Very Good Labeled Vegan Curry Options with Good Vegan Proteint

Mimikou is a curry udon restaurant in Eastern Kyoto that has a clearly labeled dedicated vegan menu with several options on it. You can choose from curry udon or curry with rice, and there are various toppings such as fired tofu, soy nuggets, and tempura. You can order the curry light, medium, or strong, but I’m not really sure what that refers to. You can also order thick or thin noodles.

The curry udon was very flavorful and aromatic. The thick noodles had a great texture and there were a ton of them. The tofu, soy nuggets, and tempura were all delicious and they did not skimp on it.

If you are in Kyoto, you should definitely stop by Mimikou for a bite at some point. I am so grateful that they put in the effort to develop a clearly vegan menu and I think they executed it very well.

Pros: very well-labeled vegan menu, delicious food, filling

Cons: fried foods may be fried with meat, they also serve meat

Great place with so many options

Such a great restaurant! There’s a vegan menu with many options to chose from. We had the curry udon and the Japanese curry with rice, which were both delicious. Everything costs around ¥1000, which is a reasonable price. Would really recommend eating there! Would give 5 stars if I could

Pros: Many vegan options, Tasty spices at your table, Big portions

Easily Worth 5 Stars

App won't let me give 5 stars, but the food and service is worth it. Some of the best vegetarian food we've ever had! Very rich kelp broth and delicious tofu. Will be back!

Pros: Clearly laid out veg menu, Quite cheap, Delicious, even by Japanese non-veg standards

Cons: Average beverage list

Delicious, tasty meal!

“Kitsune curry udon with vegetable tempura” was delicious. The vegetable tempura tasted fresh and crispy:)

Other family members enjoyed their meals too. The meals were very tasty, hot and filling.

Delicious!

This place was so so good! I really wish I could give it 5 stars. They had an English "vegetarian" menu, so ordering was really easy. The menu also specified that "all the items on the vegetarian menu are completely free of animal products".

We got the kitsune curry udon with tempura and the normal kitsune udon with added fried eggplant. The curry udon was SO flavorful! The tempura on top was also pretty good. The normal kitsune udon tasted bright and wonderful, and the eggplant was really amazing. Really recommend to get the eggplant as a topping! The portions are pretty big as well.

They also have 4 different kinds of spice blends on the table that you can add to your udon. They sell all of them at the shop.

Pros: amazing udon, cheap

Authentic Curry Udon!

This place offers delicious curry udon, which is really hard to find in regular restaurants in Japan because of the use of fish stock and animal products. The flavours are really good and they also have additional toppings that you can add to enhance your noodle experience.

Pros: Vegan Tempura Topping, Curry Udon Options

Great Lunch After Sightseeing

Stopped here after many tiring hours walking through Gion and Yasaka Shrine and it was the perfect spot for us! I am a vegan, but my friend is not - both of us were so so happy with the delicious food!

Dining space is limited (not uncommon), so we waited about 5-10 minutes to be seated, but it was totally worth it. We ended up seated by a window upstairs, so we got to look down on the busy street below. The staff was friendly and spoke some English. They had two English menus (one regular, one vegetarian- note, the only non-vegan part of the vegetarian menu is the option to add egg to your ramen). We weren't the only tourists eating here, but there were also a fair number of locals as well.

Definitely recommend this if you are hunting for a delicious lunch in Higashiyama.

Pros: english vegetarian/vegan menu, english speaking staff, friendly staff

Cons: limited seating - you may have to wait

Tasty Udon and Curry

This is worth a visit. Simple and easy to understand menu allows you to try almost anything across the menu. The vegetarian tofu option was something I’ll look for again. They even have the spice options documented in English.

Good casual spot for udon (or ramen or donburi)

When I arrived here with my mom, we were directed upstairs, and then were asked if we wanted a Chinese, Korean, Japanese, or English menu. (If you clearly look like a Caucasion tourist, they will probably just offer you the English menu // if you seem Japanese, they will probably just hand you the Japanese menu // etc...the waitress we had seemed appropriately attentive in this area. The waitress we had was multilingual, but I assume most of the staff isn't.) You can ask for the vegetarian menu-- pictures of the veg menu are on HappyCow, I suggest you take a look before going! I got the Kitsune Curry Udon for ¥886. I found the dish to be satisfying, but nothing special compared to other udon I've had. I'd come here again for its casual atmosphere, appropriate pricing, and convenient location (near a lot of shops and shrines/temples!)

Pros: Separate veg menu (English available), English speaking staff, Appropriately priced
