Maruti – Vegetarian & Vegan Indian Food in Portland, Oregon

Vibe & Atmosphere

Nestled in Portland’s vibrant Hawthorne District, Maruti offers a sacred-meets-casual experience for lovers of plant-based Indian cuisine. The space feels like a cozy, humble temple — not showy, but deeply intentional.

What We Ordered

We came to celebrate a birthday and turned our table into one giant thali, ordering a lush assortment of dishes and chutneys. Here’s what we enjoyed:
• Chutneys Galore – Mint, habanero, mango, tamarind, raita, coconut yogurt — each vibrant, fresh, and housemade
• Aloo Gobi – A soulful blend of cauliflower and potatoes, with perfectly balanced spices
• Palak / Saag – Deep, creamy greens cooked to silky perfection
• Khichdi – Comforting, wholesome, and grounding
• Chik’n Tikka Masala – Vegan brilliance; rich, smoky, and utterly satisfying
• Gluten-Free Garlic Naan – Crisp edges, soft center, bursting with flavor

To close out the meal, the owner Falguni surprised us with a vegan cardamom kheer — a creamy, sweet blessing of a dish that made the birthday feel truly special.

Flavor & Philosophy

Every dish at Maruti sings with purity and intention. The spices are full but never overwhelming, and the ingredients taste incredibly fresh and clean. This isn’t just Indian food—it’s a modern temple-style reinterpretation of tradition, offering a sattvic-feeling meal without being dogmatic.

Vegan, gluten-free, and onion/garlic-free options are clearly available and generously accommodated — a gift for spiritual eaters, sensitive bellies, or those practicing Ayurvedic or Jain diets.

Price & Value

Dishes are generously portioned and fairly priced for the quality, freshness, and care. This is not fast food — it’s soul food — and absolutely worth every penny if you’re into conscious dining and culinary craftsmanship

Pros: Thali - Mixed Platter Plates, Gluten Free Vegan Naan, Everything fresh

Super tasty but also had issues...

The restaurant wouldn't let us pay separately in a group reservation. When we asked to split the bill, they said they could only split up to 3 cards, and only evenly. It was really inconvenient for our group of 7 and we weren't made aware of it until after being seated and settled. We ended up charging everything to one card and Venmo-ing the person that paid. It was nice that gratuity was precalculated at 20% though.

I also got a Vegan Mango Lassi which I could only drink half of, not sure if it was some averse reaction to ingredients. I started feeling nauseous and my friend who I was with said the same. Not sure if it was just super thick, but it definitely affected the rest of the meal for me.

Aside from that, the Plant-based Tikka Masala was delicious! The garlic naan is also SUPER tasty.

Pros: Plant-Based Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan, Atmosphere

Cons: Group reservation payment methods

Nailed it!

Big menu, large portions, excellent flavors, super kind staff. Came here on our last night in Portland and really loved it. We ordered way too much food (of course) but who doesn’t love leftovers? We had the vegan mango lassis, garlic naan, vegan cheese naan (so hard to find vegan!), daal, and aloo gobi. Sometimes I find Indian food to be a bit heavy but this wasn’t at all. Highly recommend!

So many choices

The food was amazing. As a vegan, it always feels so good to have more than one option. I will be coming back many times to try all the options.

I had the Daal and a most delicious vegan mango Lassi.

Beautiful Location with Amazing Food

The ambiance here was lovely, I definitely would recommend it for special occasions. Although call ahead or reserve a table if possible because we did have to wait to get in. I got the Vegan Tikka Masala with potatoes and soy curls. It was delicious and soooo well spiced, they also had vegan naan which is rare to find! I loved it here and will definitely be going back

Pros: Beautiful location, Amazing Food, Vegan Naan!

Cons: On the pricier side

Jai!!

Absolutely love that they included a dairy free yogurt option and CHEESY NAAN??????? Not just Naan that we can have, BUT CHEESY NAAN?????????? HELL YEAH❣️❣️❣️❣️ The Tikka Masala was bangin, and this was my first time getting Biryani made from scratch and it did not disappoint. Also, their Achar is the good shut cause it has plenty of green Mango 😋 Their pappadam was also super airy which I really enjoyed!

Pros: CHEESY NAAN, Vegan Tikka Masala , Best kind of mixed pickle/ Achar!!!

Cons: Would be dope if they had a vegan raita , The Gulab Jamun is not vegan 😭😭😭

Vegan Indian done right

Maruti is great. We are addicted to the vegan cheezy Naan. Also, the vegan Tiki Masala with all three options is the best Tiki Masala I've ever had.

Pros: Great, well-labeled vegan options, Vegan cheezy Naan is addicting, Their version of vegan Indian food is perfect

Cons: Service was slow, but friendly

So delicious. Lots of vegan options.

The vegan tiki masala is the best. Lots of vegan nan, some with vegan cheese. Online menu is a little confusing bc it says things with paneer are vegan but obviously not.. lots of vegan stuff though.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, About the same price as everywhere, Not completely vegan- but so vegetarian so meat

Cons: Always very busy, Could accidentally order non vegan due to menu, It’s too easy to overeat

Healthy Indian food

Vegan items are clearly marked. It was pretty crowded when we went in just before 8, and they said it wasn't likely a table for 4 would open up before closing time so we took everything to go.

The menu consists of mostly just naan and some curries. We had the eggplant and saag Aloo and both tasted nice, neither was dripping with oil or had an excess of spices overpowering the vegetable's flavours. The pakora tasted more like a masala vada and was fine.

Small Chickpeas, Big Flavor

I ordered the chana masala, rice, and garlic naan. The chana masala is tasty, but slightly spicy for my low tolerance. The garlic naan just tasted like plain naan to me. Definitely enough food for two meals.

Pros: clearly-marked vegan options, large portions

Not sure what to say

Was super happy to see an Indian restaurant with marked vegan items, but was not thrilled after eating. Apparently the people who are in the kitchen are Indians, but the Aloo Bell-pepper that we ordered was very disappointing. The Garlic Naan was great. The vegetable Biriyani was average as well. Overall, I was expecting the typical Indian restaurant taste, but it was lacking, but happy to see so many vegan options clearly marked as well. Will I visit again? Maybe - after trying out many many other options available in Portland!

PS. Oh, and we tried the vegan Mango lassi too, was good - but would have liked it better if it was cold.

Ayurvedic at it's best!

I am the host of Portland Ayurvedic Meetup and a student of Ayurvedic living. We host an annual dinner here and it is the best option I have found in Portland for Vegan and Ayurvedic food. It is fresh and I have always leave feeling healthy and happy. They also have Gluten Free Options! I highly recommend Maruti.

Pros: authentic, tasty, good value

Cons: parking

Most Amazing Indian Food

This is the best Indian food I've ever had! The food is amazing, the restaurant is cute, and the staff are wonderful. The owners are so sweet, and very clearly care about their food and customers. The vegan tikka masala is a must, as well as the vegan mango lassi. Their food may seem spendy, but matches the average Portland restaurant price, and many of their ingredients are organic/local.

Pros: Excellent food, Friendly staff, Ayurveda

One of the best restaurants in Portland hands down

This has quickly become a favorite place in town. The vegan Indian options in PDX can be frustrating and bland but this place is changing all of that! The cheesy vegan Naan is so good I could just eat that forever. Add the mushroom biryani and a curry and you have a mouth-gasm in the making
