Great food - Edit
I had a Jia Chang Dou Fu tofu dish, and I can really recommend it. The place decor is quite frugal, especially compared to other Chinese and Asian restaurant. And the background music don't fit the theme neither. Not bad things IMO, especially not when the food is good.
Read moreIt is a bit expensive however, costing 275 SEK for a medium sized main dish.
Pros: Great food

Beyond my expectations - Edit
Since this is the second highest restaurant on HappyCow in Stockholm after Hermans I've been wanting to pay it a visit for a long time - and yesterday evening I was finally able to do so.
Read moreMy expectations were mixed and a bit confused; on the one hand the extremely positive reviews on HappyCow made me expect greatness, but on the other hand having lived in China for several months and not really loving the food there made me worry about Lao Wai's "authentic Chinese cuisine".
The verdict: It was beyond my highest expectations. Lao Wai had far better food than any Chinese food I ever had in China, and some of the best vegan food I've ever had.
We were two people and had read in previous reviews that the meals are quite large, so we ordered one starter to share, one main course to share, and one dessert each. I would say it was a bit too little food for us. The starter was very small, smaller than expected.
As a start we had #3 and it was delicious, a solid 5/5.
For the main course we had #13 and it was also good, though the veg balls could've been a bit tastier. I give it a 4/5.
A lot of the reviews speak very highly of the dessert ice cream so we made sure not to miss that. I had the orange and chili ice cream and it was a solid 4.5/5. I don't even usually like ice cream. It was extremely delicious.
Some final points: The service was impeccable. The rice was re-filled swiftly when asked for. The interior design is very simple, minimalistic and clean. The focus is on the food and it's well worth it.
The fact that their entire menu is vegan makes this a 5/5 for me. I would love to go back with a much bigger party and try out more of their dishes.
Definitely don't miss this gem!
EDIT:
I went back with a bigger party (we were six) and we all loved it. Fantastic place with fantastic food!

An exciting authentic food journey! - Edit
Intense authentic flavours, interesting plating and texture variance, and a deep addicting umami flavour! You can tell they really care about their craft.

The only downsides is that it's a bit small and hard to talk in the restaurant. The prices are also a little high, but for what you get it's well worth it!
Pros: Authenticity, Variety, Service
Cons: Small restaurant, Loud, A little on the expensive side

Absolutely fabulous meal - Edit
We didn’t make a reservation so were very lucky to snag a walk in table on a busy Saturday night (the place filled up very quickly after we sat down so I’d highly recommend reserving). We were spoiled for choice with the menu, eventually deciding on a smoked tofu & blackbean dish and mixed vegetables in a garlic sauce. All main dishes come with rice included. The smoked tofu was tasty without being overpowering and the sauce was the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. The mixed veg dish was super fresh with a decent variety of vegetables. For dessert we tried some pistachio ice cream with cardamom, coffee & a sorbet. The coffee flavour was perfection. Decent selection of wine - I was pleased to see a Riesling (my favourite). Service was very friendly and efficient without being overbearing. It was expensive but overall worth it in my opinion. Wouldn’t hesitate to return!

Amazing food - Edit
Loved the food and the staff was friendly, but would have been even better if they had focused a bit more on getting the restaurant cozy, dimmed lighting, offering a wider selection of beer etc. If I put it like this - this is not the place to take your wife for a date night when you finally have been able to find a babysitter 😉. Still, in my view, one of the best vegan spots in Stockholm. Recommended!

Love this cute little place. Their flavours are so distinct and different. I would definetly recommend a visit. But since the place is quite small make sure to make a reservation. And be aware of the quite expensive prices but (in my opinion) totally worth it.

best vegan Chinese I ever ate - Edit
this place is super authentic, and what a treat that the whole menu is vegan. I cannot wait to try the entire menu at a later date. for this time, I got the porcini mushrooms starter and the mapo tofu. it filled me up so well - they are big portions! I went alone this time but I saw quite a few people eating as groups and ordering multiple dishes to share. the place is quite small, so I had to wait about 15 min for a table - no problem, I just went on a little walk outside and then came back. it was well worth the wait. I will for sure be coming back here!!!
