Great Eritrean food, but quite heavy flavors

I've been to Jebena many times over perhaps a decade.

After discovering more East African restaurants, I've realized that Jebena stands out as being quite heavy in their flavors and on the spicier side.

If you like punchy flavors, you will leave quite fulfilled. Take the mixed plate Beb' Ainetu for variety. The vegetarian Zigni is very heavy in flavor. Even if that's your thing, I would recommend you share it with someone as well as sharing a mixed plate.

The interior is very pleasant and everything is clean and nice.

Pros: Good vegan variety with the mixed plate, Punchy and spicy, Very nice atmosphere

Cons: A bit too heavy flavors to want to go often, It can take a while for the food to be done

Vegan friendly cuisine

I enjoyed their vegan mixed plate (veg beb'ainetu) but at the same time I’ve had better. Minus for the staff bringing extra injera to the table along with the food without us ordering it and then charging for it.

Pros: Vegan friendly, Cosy indoor setting

Tricky to find - Great mixed veg platter

Great mixed veg platter. A bit tricky to find, as it is located below ground! Just next to the payment booths to the underground

Amazing flavors

Other reviews are stating that the food is flavorless, I want to dispute that entirely as when I visited the flavors were quite potent and I very much enjoyed my meal. The atmosphere is very cozy.

The restaurant is located in the subway so it might be hard to find. The subway location adds to the cozyness in a good way as the high ceiling is exposed and it's quite a "cave"- like atmosphere.

Staff is friendly and accomodating to vegans, there are several vegan options.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, cozy atmosphere, nice staff

Cons: Crowded

Good food but slow service

I had the vegetarian beb'ainetu with a combination of four different dishes served with injera bread. The food is traditionally eaten without utensils but these can be requested. The dish was good although the flavors could've been more potent. However, the service was very slow and we had to repeatedly ask for them to e.g. bring the menu and waited approximately an hour for our food to be served. No excuses from the staff.
