Read moreB/c when it started 2023, it might had all drinks and food vegan, but was scared as hell to call it with the 'v-word', only were calling itself and what it offers as 'plant-based'. When asked about it, they said 'We don't want to push away non-vegan customers, rather strive for soft under-cover introduction to vegan dining'.
But be sure it leaned heavily and unfair into the vegan community, in order to pull out as mush money and support out of us as possible: They kick-started and made 1st appearance for most people by a deal with HappyCow. They bought themselves into the spotlight of HappyCow, gave HappyCow money for that: Back in the days, when you typed in 'Düsseldorf Germany' into the search field, even if you additionally filtered by 'vegan', 1st u saw this restaurant listed, although it didn't had most reviews of all restaurants in Düsseldorf, all other vegan restaurants came second, were pushed into the background by that very loud, emphazised display of Hulala—it only could have been topped by making the Hulala mark on the map blinking or having sound effects.
And then one day, when they've established in vegan community, had solid, steady support from that side, they silently turned their back on veganism. Over night 50% of their menu turned bloody. A lot of vegans, out of habit ordered fav dishes by name, relied on their constructed impression this is a vegan safe space and that the ingredients behind the dish names, which were fine in the beginning, didn't change—and so ending up eating animal products. In each case, that's a violation of your rights and the rights of the murdered animals, and reason enough to sue that restaurant.
One of the consequences of that development: Digital backlash. The restaurants response to all the disappointed vegans expressing their concerns online: Censor comments, labelling vegans as liars, etc.—they've pulled a classic Streisand effect.
Of course, that restaurant is now burned land for the vegan community; most vegans boycott that restaurant now. End of story: If someone comes to you and says "All nice and dandy, but why do you insist so much on explicitly usage of the term 'vegan', isn't 'plant-based' fine?"—well, think of Hulala. Or in other words: If a restaurant, which seems to be a vegan safe space, is scared of the 'v-word', avoids it wherever it can—that smells fishy.

Tolles Lokal - Einfach alles ist lecker - Edit
Ich fande das Restaurant richtig toll. Ich hatte den Forever Free Chickn mit extra veganem Bacon und der war sooo lecker. Dazu hatten wir Loaded Superfries und California Corn Ribs und beides war sehr sehr lecker. Die vegane Käsesauce ist der Hammer!!! Zum Nachtisch hatte ich das Soft Ice Chocolate Brownie und es hat mich so an das Softeis von McDonald's erinnert. Einfach lecker. Das Restaurant ist eine 10/10.

Kaltes, alt schmeckendes Essen und nicht mehr vegan - Edit
Ich habe vor einigen Wochen zum zweiten Mal bei Hulala gegessen. Das erste Mal war gut. Beim zweiten Mal schmeckten die Pommes kalt und alt. Mein Burger war auch kalt. Im Zuge dessen habe ich neue wärmere Pommes bekommen, aber einzelne Pommes schmeckten trotzdem alt. Ich war so unzufrieden, dass ich eine 2 Sterne Bewertung auf Google schrieb. Diese ehrliche Beschreibung meiner Erfahrung wurde heute von Google aufgrund von vermeintlicher Verleumdung entfernt. Hier kann ich nur vermuten, dass dem Restaurant meine "schlechte" Bewertung nicht gefiel und sie versuchten auf diesem Weg meine Bewertung zu entfernen. Das stimmt mich umso unglücklicher über das Restaurant und ich frage mich wie viele Bewertungen bereits entfernt wurden.

It’s so nice having so many appetising and tasty options. The prices are alright and the service was pretty fast.

Es wurde nirgendwo kommuniziert das das Menü nicht mehr ausschließlich Vegan ist. Aufgrund dessen wurde wie gewohnt ein Cheeseburger bestellt, der sich dann als nicht vegan heraus stellte. Dieser musste dennoch gezahlt werden, obwohl er nicht gegessen werden konnte. Sehr enttäuschend.

Hulala newly opened a few days ago in the location of the former Bastians at Carlsplatz. I really love it here! They are very unobtrusive and don't trumpet the fact that everything is vegan.

Payment: You can pay by credit card, Google Pay or PayPal. Prices are absolutely moderate.
Food & drinks: Burger, fries, salads, snacks, desserts – everything 100% vegan. The food can be individualized when ordering, you can leave out or add different ingredients. You won’t get the usual soft drinks, but different nice homemade drinks, ice tea, hot drinks and cocktails. They even had alcohol-free Corona bear with fresh lime. I tried the peach lemonade which was delicious! For coffee they serve oat milk. The burger and harissa mayo were really good. The fries are maybe not what you are used to due to the fact that they are prepared with the hot-air fryer, but I liked them and they were nicely seasoned - even with herbs. The side salad came along with fresh (!) corn and tasty dressing. Everything was served shortly after ordering.

Very uncomplicated to order via the self-serve terminals and always very fast service.
I love their burgers. To me their choice is ample, since I’m a sucker for fully loaded buns, so I’m a big fan.
Their sides, which all come from air fryers add a nice touch as well.
I personally believe that prices are very fair, given the location of the restaurant.
In short: I love coming here and do so frequently.

Many vegan options. I thought it's fully vegan but they do unfortunately offer some dead animals meat as well. we took 2 vegan burgers that were good. the petty was tasty the brioche bun was not so good. we took a salad which was amazing! we also ordered cheese balls which were nice!

Ich habe den Laden geliebt! Es war ein Veganer Safespace. Jetzt wurde aber locker das halbe Vegane Sortiment gestrichen und durch Fleisch ausgetauscht😄Die Preise sind außerdem extrem hoch, was ich auch gerne bezahlt habe, weil der Laden eben komplett vegan war, für das Geld gehe ich aber jetzt lieber woanders hin.

🌱die lage ist gut, vor allem da es das erste vegane lokal in der altstadt ist (die ja jetzt nicht unbedingt super veganfreundliche restaurants hat)
🌱man kann sich ganz in ruhe am tisch (oder an einem dieser bestellteile, die vorne im laden sind, und die man vielleicht von take-out restaurants kennt) aussuchen, was man essen möchte und auch sachen abbestellen, wenn man irgendwelche inhalte nicht mag. das ist sehr entspannt

🌱die einrichtung ist richtig schön, vor allem, weil es auch so viele pflanzen gibt. es wirkt alles sehr schön abgestimmt aufeinander, sogar die uniformen der kellner:innen
🌱das personal ist auch total lieb und hilfsbereit
der einzige kritikpunkt ist, dass man nicht bar zahlen kann.

I was surprised to find that I had inadvertently ordered a meat patty. Upon asking I was informed that the menu had been changed a few days ago to include meat products. Milk products, however, have not been introduced. I had a talk with the manager who was very apologetic and explained the change in policy very clearly. Reintroducing meat was a reluctant decision following many complaints and even cases of vandalism in response to meat-eating customers feeling duped into eating plant-based food during their visit. While this is a depressing reflection on our society as a whole, I feel that it is difficult to judge the restaurant too harshly when trying to deal with the realities and everyday stresses of running a business under such difficult circumstances.
Read moreThe staff were very accommodating and showed me around the food preparation area, explaining how all non-vegan products were handled separately to avoid cross-contamination. I will still continue support the restaurant, as I would any other restaurant which serves both vegan and non-vegan food and hope that one day the situation will improve in order for them to gradually reintroduce a more vegan-friendly menu.
P.S. My burger was replaced free of charge.

Read moreIch benutze hier den Begriff ‘pflanzlich’, weil vegan ein Begriff ist, der eine ethische Entscheidung umfasst. Es war mir von Anfang an klar, dass es sich hier um ein Konzept handelt und nicht, dass dieses Restaurant aus ethischer Überzeugung vegan gewesen sei.
Ich habe das Restaurant öfters unterstützt und mehrmals dort gegessen und immer für gut empfunden. Allerdings wird das jetzt nicht mehr der Fall sein. Ich habe es langsam satt mit Restaurants , die sich als vegan ausgeben und dann wenig Monate später Fleisch anbieten. das ist auch bei funky bowl/Vedang usw passiert. Geld steht offensichtlich an der ersten Stelle und nicht die Tiere.
Ich habe vor ein paar Monaten einem Freund gesagt, dass ich glaube, dass Hulala nur Zeit begrenzt pflanzlich bleiben wird. Und das hat sich genauso bewahrheitet.
Mir ist lieber andere Restaurants zu unterstützen , auch die, die nicht rein vegan sind, aber sich nicht von Anfang an als vegan ausgegeben haben. Das handelt sich hier beinah um Verbrauchertäuschung.
Happy Cow sollte dringlich das vegane Label vom Profil entfernen.
Es ist schade, aber damit habe ich gerechnet. Aber leider gibt es keine veganen Restaurants mehr in der Düsseldorfer Innenstadt.
Das Restaurant sollte diese Änderung außerdem offenlegen , da man sich nicht mit diesem neuen Konzept überraschen lassen möchte.

I am using the term plant based as it is clear from the beginning that Hulala was a plant based concept and that animal welfare and ethics weren’t a priority .
I have supported the restaurant and been multiple times however I am no longer able to support restaurants which build up a vegan customer base and then ditch their loyal customers and (potentially values) because of money. I would rather support non-vegan and vegan restaurants which honestly communicate their intentions from the start .
Happy cow needs to remove the vegan label from the profile immediately and this should not be listed at the top for Düsseldorf - I know happy cow and Hulala have been partners in the past however this needs to be changed with immediate effect.
There are unfortunately no longer any happy cows at this business . And it’s a shame to see it follow the pattern of Vedang , funky bowl etc.
They need to communicate this openly as it’s not been publicised.
