Delicious Hoto, amazing sake, lots of vegan options!

A bit difficult to reach, but it’s definitely worth it.
Even though there are many restaurants/cafes with vegan options in the Shonan area, most of them close by five p.m., so if you are in the area and want to have a tasty and fulfilling dinner this is the place! Everything we had was amazing, I was especially impressed about the hoto and the doburoku sake. The menu is full of vegan options. I also enjoyed the lively izakaya style atmosphere.

Delicious authentic hoto!

I got the hoto lunch set with black sesame hoto. You can choose your flavor of hoto for the set. Of course you can order only hoto as well. Tell them that your are vegan and they’ll make the broth vegan. The soy milk Apple cinnamon ice cream which came with the set was very good! Friendly staff as well! This place was very busy and I went on a weekday. I want to something else next time! They got many vegan options including taco rice, fried soy meat etc.

great food

I agreed to go here before I read the previous review about the staff not wearing masks during the state of emergency and anti-mask propaganda being posted on the walls. That's really disappointing.

Now that the state of emergency is over, people can choose if they want to wear masks and I did not see any propaganda posted on the walls, so it looked just like a normal restaurant.

There were so many food choices- the peace sign-marked items were already vegan and the yin-yang marked items were veganizable on request.

I had some fermented veggie butter, which came with fried okara cakes, and their most popular houtou, veganized. Everything tasted great.

The restaurant looks like it should be in the countryside, not on a busy street in Fujisawa. It is really charming. As for the location, it was more convenient than I thought it would be because it was only three station stops from Fujisawa Station.

I would like them to focus on the food, which they do beautifully, and leave public health advice to the experts.

Pros: outstanding food, lots of choices , charming restaurants

Cons: seems they didn't follow public health practices

Good food, bad adherence to public health policies

Original review from 2019: Good hoto. Try to avoid sitting at the counter if you can, as it’s not so comfortable.

Edit 2021: I can no longer in good faith recommend this restaurant, as the staff don’t wear masks, even during a state of emergency, and there’s even anti-mask propaganda inside the restaurant. Very disappointing.

Pros: Good food

Cons: Hard wooden chairs are hard , Off the beaten path , Should stick to serving food, not medical advice

Quality Japanese Vegan Food

If I could give this restaurant five stars, I would! Hekkoro is a very traditional Japanese restaurant. We sat on tatami mat floors at short tables to enjoy our lunch. All the food with a yin yang symbol ☯️ can be made vegan, and all the food with a peace symbol ☮️ is vegan as-is! They also offer soy milk ice cream in various flavors. We tried the “cheesy” hōtō and the curry hōtō, both were fabulous. The staff didn’t speak any English, so brush up on your Japanese before going!

Pros: Lots of labeled vegan options., Traditional Japanese atmosphere and food.

Cons: A little tricky if you don’t speak any Japanese.
