down to Earth farmer's market near Civic Center Bart and the main library - Edit
Heart of the City Farmer's Market is located in the heart of the City aka near Civic Center Bart and the main library.
Read moreThis is definitely a blue collar farmer's market. I work nearby and frequent it once a week as I do the Ferry Building Farmer's Market.
Heart of the City Farmer's Market has a few similar vendors as does the Ferry Building Farmer's market such as the mushroom folks and green thumb. I frequently get shiitake or king trumpet mushrooms from the mushroom folks.
Green Thumb has a great salsa and also love their kale and greens.
Much of the produce here is organic yet doesn't have the labelling for organic labelling is very costly.
I also love Two Dog for their Salsa and hot sauces.
As a whole produce here is very affordable and don't miss the dollar bags of produce which are quite alright.

Local, Organic, and Grown with Love - Edit
I worked for several restaurants in the area and the chefs come out first thing to pick out veggies for the day. Ask the farmers if they use pesticides. Many of the produce are organic, but they can’t afford the expensive certification. In the Spring, the strawberries are devine and you’re lucky if you find Galaxy peaches or my second favourite, the Snow White peaches.

Great prices - Edit
If you’re looking for a wide variety of food, get there early. After 2-3, stores start closing up and 3:30-4 you can get big discounts on whatever is left. Sometimes you have to judge the freshness of some stands and use the veggies quicker

Hella Vegan Eats - Edit
The food truck called Hella Vegan Eats was there this year and last, offering tasting vegan food on the eve of Christmas Eve. This year, we tried a "chicken" bao sandwich, on a burger bun with a little umbrella on top, bed of spring mix. Thin slice of fake chicken was very impressive. Also got a burrito, nice mix of veggies and seitan. Plus a little gingerbread cake for later. Good variety of ingredients, very creative food, friendly service.

Grungy, good selection - Edit
The largest unfancy farmer's market in the city, with at least a dozen different farm stands selling fresh produce, some organic, some not. You can find everything here. There are also a handful of prepared food trucks at one end. This location is literally city center, so be prepared for limited parking options and good public transit/walkability. Not really a good neighborhood but should be fine in the morning, and right next to the beautiful main SF public library and Civic Center.

Heart of the City Farmer's Market - Edit
I'm so glad that they stopped selling live chickens! I wasn't going to go unless they stopped. So now that I have been.. I really like it. I always get good produce for cheap. They have some prepared items. I have seen vegan somosas there before too. Also towards the end they do $1 bags and cut prices down. Oh and get the never watered tomatoes! So good.

Heart of the City Farmers Market - Edit
There are several farmers markets in San Francisco but this is my favorite. It's the blue collar-type: not everything is organic and we're still trying to stop the sales of live chickens, but the produce is local and the hours are great: 7 AM to 5 PM Sundays and 7 AM to 5:30 PM on Wednesdays year round rain or shine.

Cons: Live chickens, Not always organic
