Vegan choices and kind service

They have a combo set that vegans can enjoy which includes a choice or drink and a side along with couple of gyoza sets.

They were also very kind in checking ingredients for allergies concerning gluten and soy for some of the other menu items.

limited options but very good!

There was only one vegan gyoza with some vegan sides and a banana and chocolate gyoza for a dessert which was amazing!! But if you are vegetation there is a whole menu with tons of options! The staff was super sweet and the food was really good with vegan options clearly marked. If anything stop by for the banana chocolate gyoza :)

Pros: tasty, nice staff, many vegetation options

Cons: closed early , limited vegan options

Fabulous food, great service!

Delicious food with lots of options for vegetarians and vegans; vegetarian menu specifies what is vegan. Lively place with energetic staff. My husband and I had a great time and will definitely go back during our time in Kyoto!

Pros: Vegan options that were delicious, Lively atmosphere, Friendly, responsive staff

Wish I could have eaten more!

Such friendly staff, loved having a separate vego menu. The dumplings were the stuff of dreams! We came close to closing so we only got to try three types but I definitely want to go back and try as much as possible.

Pros: Menu states which are vego and which are vegan

Cons: Cooked on same hot plates as non vego/vegan gyōza

Super fun and yum

Staff are absolutely lovely, English menu available. As other reviews have mentioned there is a no meat no fish menu available, but they are upfront about the fact that it is cooked with the same equipment. My husband loved their meat gyoza and I was super happy with my tofu and mashed potato gyoza.

Pros: Wonderful atmosphere and friendly staff, Yummy gyoza, Great location

Cons: Limited options esp for vegan, Possibility of cross-contamination.

Good find

Found a good place for dinner just around the corner where bushido travel group had their dinner upstairs I used happy cow app said it was 1 min walk away! Cute little dinner bar, staff greet you happily, busy place popular place, food came out quickly and very yummy. Loved the vegan banana gyoza with choc sauce. Would visit it again if I could.

Pros: Some good yummy vegan food and dessert, Cheap, Fast and friendly staff

Good options for tasty gyoza

This restaurant offers loads of veggie and vegan options for gyoza. It also has loads of meat versions which my partner appreciated.

There is a separate veggie menu available in Japanese and English. They do state that meat and fish are cooked in the same kitchen so some veggies/vegans might not like this but I think you are lucky to find anything veggie and tasty in Japan so it’s worth the risk.

Staff were super friendly and the atmosphere was great. Really recommend.

Would give 5 stars if I was allowed to.

Pros: Options, Tasty food, Staff

Vegan Yuba Gyoza

The staff here are very friendly and the one vegan gyoza option they have (yuba) is really tasty! I wish they had more options, however, but it’s a good start as it’s a really popular restaurant.

Pros: Vegan Yuba Gyoza

Cons: Only one vegan gyoza option

delicious comfort food!

fast service in a cozy atmosphere with really tasty veggir and vegan gyozas, what more can you ask for? oh and the price is pretty good as well - a fun lunch of about 8 gyozas, 2 different kinds, plus salad, water, and ice cream with 4 little dessert gyozas for about 15 bucks. will definitely be back.

Pros: delicious food, great location , fast service

Had 8 veggie dishes for about 1500 yen (2ppl)

Wide range of flavours.
Staff spoke great English.
Tried all the vegetarian no-meat dishes and French fries, and then the two desserts.
My gf loved the cheese Gyoza (she doesn't usually like Gyoza), and I liked the fried mashed potato Gyoza ... And the French fries (you can ask for mayo) haha!
Pretty chill place with ample space for costs, bags, and umbrellas.

Delicious!

We visited this place never having tried gyoza before. We ordered two orders of the ones with mushroom-risotto, tofu and potatoes and truly enjoyed all of them. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and prices low, we would definitely visit again.

Pros: 5-6 vegetarian options, cheap, delicious

Cons: none

Delicious but maybe not for very strict vegans

Fyi that they use the same oil/equipment for the vegetarian stuff (it is clearly stated on the menu, so they're upfront about it.) Just want to put that out there for those who would mind. Usually in the states I'm a bit more picky about that (I've definitely turned my nose up at french fries that were fried with chicken fingers, for example) but I had already made my partner walk a bit far to get to this place and it was getting late so I just went with it.

The gyoza were delicious- we had the yuba and the pickled plum ones.. Both were good but we both preferred the latter and ordered a second round of them. The lady at the counter was awesome and friendly. A nice open late option for people who don't mind the shared equipment!

Pros: open late, yummy gyoza, friendly staff

Cons: shared equipment

I want to eat gyoza forever

The deep fried everything is sooo good. Definitely recommend the potato deep fried gyoza with the soy vinegar sauce. The menus are a little confusing as the “no fish menu” side had deep fried tofu - but I think it may have had bonito flakes on the side which I just left. It was a very friendly place and I overheard at least two other vegetarians there at the same time as us. Great place to go if you’re with non-vegetarians also!

open late!

It's difficult to find somewhere to grab a late dinner in Japan, especially when you're looking for something veg or vegan.

We were SO hungry and we'd already been turned away from a few spots listed as open late but were not. This place has separate meat-free and fish-free menus. The food is cooked in the same oil as the meat but at this point I didn't care. I had mashed potato gyoza, shbazuke gyoza, and yuba gyoza plus steamed rice and sprout salad.

Please note: I'm vegan at home and as veg as possible when traveling. If you're very strict vegan, this probably isn't the place for you.

Pros: Open late, Separate meat-free and fish-free menus in English , Super friendly and funny staff

Cons: Not really vegan

Limited vegan options

There's 2 Chao Chao Gyoza stores but the one that serves vegan/vegetarian is the one located in Shijo-Kawaramachi also in Kyoto about 10 minutes from the first shop. They have a vegetarian menu with heaps of options but unfortunately vegan is limited to the tofu skin one. You can then get sides like cabbage, bean sprouts and salad. All were amazing. We were happy to be able to get vegan gyozas in Japan that were catered for us. Very friendly staff who assisted us with our options.

Pros: Great service, Yummy

Cons: Only 1 vegan gyoza option

Only one vegan gyoza

All we could eat as vegans was deep fried tofu and one type of gyoza. I’m guessing the gyoza dough they use has egg or something, because the vegan one is wrapped in tofu skin. It was OK. Extremely friendly staff who speak English well enough to understand the whole vegan thing.

Super Satisfying

Several vegan and vegetarian choices, very friendly (and funny) staff - highly recommended. The gyoza were great - I tried the yuba and mushroom risotto gyoza, and both were really delicious.

Pros: English vegan and vegetarian menus, Friendly staff, Relatively inexpensive

Would give 5 stars!

I love this place. We tried to go to their other branch but it is closed for a few days for some reason (check before going) but their sign directed us to this one. We had the friendliest welcome from all the staff while they carried on churning out gyoza in a fun frenetic way. They have a separate veggie menu with items clearly marked as veggie - it is unclear what dishes are vegan but I suspect the shbazuke and yuba which I had are vegan. Both types of gyoza I tried were delicious, fresh, filling and interesting flavours. We came back a couple of days later and I had the same plus tasty deep fried tofu and sesame/bean dessert gyoza too - scrummy! I highly recommend their chao sour and yuzu sour drinks too - refreshing delicious and far too drinkable! The only thing I would change is that it would be nice if there were more Japanese flavoured veggie gyoza as most of them had quite western sounding fillings - mashed potato, mushroom risotto with cheese and mushroom with white sauce. I bet they are delicious I just love trying local flavours!

Pros: Great atmosphere, Amazing food, Not too expensive

Great vegetarian gyozas

5 different gyozas for vegetarians. Potato one is a bit bland but other ones are great, I loved the shibazuke one. The chocolate gyozas for dessert is surprisingly good! Waiters speak good English and are really friendly too.
