Best vegan Chinese restaurant - Edit
This is honestly the best all-vegan Chinese restaurant I've been to. If I could give it 6 stars, I would. I highly recommend the taro nest and the kale mushroom Supreme.

Exciting variety, substantial portions - Edit
The House platter and noodle soup was great. Hard to complain with the portion sizes but the scallion pancakes fell apart a bit too easily. I've had more success at home using sourdough starter for the base.

Just amazing - Edit
Amazing food but I'm probably bias since I eat here every week when I'm in Boston! Great deal great amount of food and super yummy taste! Low key healthy but yeah haha. Ask for the orange chicken made with tofu. And the black beef is to die for!

THE BEST - Edit
Grasshopper is my legit favourite restaurant of all time. The food is incredibly delicious, the prices cheap, and the staff extremely friendly.
Read moreYou can’t go wrong with any item here, but I highly recommend the Jon special:

BBQ veggie pork
Sweet and sour sensation (superior to the no name!)

Pleasantly surprised - Edit
Based on the reviews and the scuttlebutt I wasn’t expecting too much. Was much better than I was expecting. We got the hot and sour soup which I thought was right up there with many hot and sour soups and better than most. We also got number 93, house special crispy Taro nest. Lots of vegetables, cooked well with Al dente veggies, not too oily or too saucy. (You know how sometimes Chinese food is smothered in sauce). Still had plenty of flavor. Good balance of flavors and veggies to protein.

Looks too much like meat - Edit
I really wanted to love this place, as it is well knows amongst vegans. But their dishes look and taste way too much like meat.

Old standby - Edit
My usual order at Grasshopper:
Read more- chicken fingers
- vermicelli rolls
- No-name or sweet and sour sensation
- a wildcard (eggplant and tofu surprise, hot and sour soup, whatever we feel like)
Huge portions, good value, friendly service. The appetizer combos are good. It’s pretty standard and reliable food. Went so far as to have Grasshopper at my wedding, and my non-vegan, traditional family loved it. Need I say more?

Really tasty food - Edit
I love the food at Grasshopper. I'm not sure why some folks are describing it as bland. Maybe they were unlucky enough to go there on an off-day. I ate there when i was first in Boston 10 years ago, and went back this weekend. It was great! Although their spring rolls weren't great, the No Name special, and the Seitan Sauteed with Spicy Lemongrass were both great. Huge portions too. My hubbie and I got takeout (the interior of the restaurant isn't very nice) and could manage less than half of the meal. Lots of leftovers 😋
Read morePro-Tip: the No Name Special goes soggy when it gets cold but crisps up really well in the toaster oven for leftovers.

I was looking forward to trying grasshopper and was disappointed by the quality and lack of taste. I got a noodle soup and a maki roll. The rangoon was great.

100% Vegan Chinese Takeout Style - Edit
Big menu and tons of variety! It was pretty difficult to choose from all of the options but we ended up ordering the eggplant, lo mein and veggie fried rice dishes with wontons. Just like any standard Chinese takeout spot, they had a lunch special and the prices were great overall. So glad I got to try their sweet and spicy tofu soup with my lunch special, it was a real treat and overall loved the flavor. Would highly consider going back again for vegan Chinese food options

LOVE grasshopper. any place w the audacity to serve “vegi-squid” and the generosity to keep their prices Boston-reasonable is a winner in my book. I keep getting the chow foon noodles because they’re sooooo good but excited to keep exploring!

Bland and Tasteless - Edit
I was extremely disappointed with my experience at grasshopper in Allston.
Read moreI ordered the “No Name” and I think they misheard me and gave me the “No Taste” instead. I was left eating flavorless, soggy, chunks.
The scallion pancake was absolutely horrid. I could eat more than a single bite.
When I went to pick up my order the restaurant didn’t appear to be clean.
The food was expensive for the low-quality. I will not be coming again.
Pros: Lots of options
Cons: Flavorless and Bland, Expensive, Grimy/Dirty Restaurant

Amazing - Edit
I've been eating here for about twenty years, and it's still my absolute favorite place to eat in the Boston area. I've tried just about everything on the menu, and there were few things I disliked. The fried wontons and vermicelli rolls are my favorite. 10/10 would recommend. (Parking usually available a block away at the neighborhood park)

Fantastic for catering - Edit
We ordered large quantities of a few dishes to feed 10 people for a small party: wontons, tofu hand rolls, Hot and Sour Soup, No Name, House Ginger Lobster, Eggplant Tofu Surprise, Chow Foon Noodles w/Beef. The quantities were HUGE. Probably could serve 20 people. The price was amazing; with tip the total was just $150
Read moreMy fave was the Hot and Sour Soup. The other good dishes were the Chow Foon Noodles and the Wontons. YUM. The Eggplant and Ginger Lobster needed more flavor. The tofu hand rolls were ... not good.

Fantastic! - Edit
Just ordered takeout from grasshopper for the second time in as many months, after not having it for over 25 years (moved to suburbs). It is just fantastic. Wonderful selection of appetizers! Tonight I also had the lobster entrée, which was phenomenal – a very delicate taste with all the ginger.

Some things were great (orange chicken, vermicelli chicken) and others were a bit bland (wonton soup). The “nest” had a fake shrimp in it that I didn’t like at all.

Value for money - Edit
This was the first time in the US where I actually felt like I didn't overpay for vegan food. The portions are HUGE and you could easily share one dish been two people. We ordered the watercress with ginger, sweet and sour sensation and eggplant tofu surprise. The sweet and sour sauce was really delicious but I would have loved it if they served it with the traditional pineapple, carrots and red pepper like they do with the regular sweet and sour they offer (I didn't realise until after I ordered). The staff were very nice.

So many options! - Edit
This place has pages and pages of options! Hard to find as vegan dishes like mock meat dumplings and wonton soup. The taste of the food was overall alright, not all the mock meats have the best flavor. I will be going back again! Low prices and huge portions.
