Delicious but inconsistent - Edit
Of three experiences at this restaurant, they were all different!
Read moreFirst meal at the restaurant, couldn’t finish our gorgeous meals. Then two take-out orders two nights in a row, one had overfilling portions and was plated beautifully, the other had half full containers and looked sloppy. Beans were spicy one night, not the next.
Wish they’d be a little more generous with that delicious cashew cream sauce! And please add a side of chips to your online order forums.
Seems like a review of menu management is needed. We spent a lot of money to be so let down.
Pros: All vegan!, Delicious!, Helpful staff.
Cons: Inconsistent experiences + food quality, No GF labels on menu, Small take-out portions

I wish Gracias Madre had a branch in the East Bay! I would go there regularly. Not only is the food delicious, but you can feel relieved that your food is light on the earth and that you are helping to end cruelty to animals. Ole!

Happy Hour In La Misión - Edit
Another throw back blog of one of my early vegan experiences in early 2018. If there's one cuisine that can easily convert to vegan friendly, it's Mexican cuisine. And in SF, La Misión district is the epicenter of Mexican food. So GM was the first to pop up with "vegan Mexican" on the search during my Yelp days. Lol Did some reconnaissance on their menu and notice price point were a little steep for Mexican food...in the Mission at that. And again being new to the vegan scene at the time, the stereotype of vegan food was "iT's pRiCeY." So I factored that into making the decision to eat here. But I notice they had a Happy Hour menu which prices were reasonable. So went with Happy Hour in La Misión. Order their nachos for $8 and their black bean torta which they don't service anymore. I was impressed with the size portion of the nachos. You can never be too sure with happy hour portions. It almost filled me up where I still had to attack the torta which was a decent size too. Overall, it was a good experience. I'd definitely plan to go back to their happy hour, hopefully soon.

Not worth the price - Edit
This is not Mexican food. If you are looking for gentrification on a plate, you’ll be served well. Three tacos and a side of beans was $18 so I was expecting to be blown away honestly. It’s definitely not authentic which was also a slight expectation of mine. The food descriptions were intriguing and when we got it, it looked “cool” but portions sizes are small for the price. I didn’t get full and had to order an extra side of beans to top off the entree. Waiters were overworked and slipped up a couple times because of this. Black beans are good but definitely not $6.50 good. They have authentic music and decor but it’s upsetting to know that this restaurant uses culture that isn’t theirs for profit.

The food is definitely great! Had the horchata and an enchilada dish. Very flavorful, which is one of my gripes with a lot of vegan places.

Average Yet Overpriced Vegan Food - Edit
Chose Gracias Madre based on Happy Cow and Yelp reviews but left disappointed. The food tasted average at best and it was overpriced based on the quality and quantity.

Overrated, bland - Edit
You know how when the food is bland they make it spicy (hot) so that they can cover up the blandness? Well that's how I felt about Gracias Madre. I went twice to give them a chance but nope. Overpriced and nothing special. I liked the style of the restaurant though. But also disappointing is that they are raising animals on their farm and sending them to slaughter. If I'm going to a vegan place it's because they believe in the ethics of it and follow it. I'm not super down to go to those "vegan" restaurants where they are vegan or offer vegan options just because they think it's "trending." (I also felt that way about the Plant Cafe).

Ok - Edit
We’ve been twice. A couple things were good, most other things were not. There are 4 of us that went both times. We all order something different, and we all share, so in those 2 visits we tried quite a few things. Also, I would NEVER go there after dark. It’s in a terrible area.

Favorite in SF - Edit
Gracias Madre is definitely my favorite restaurant that I have been to in SF. Located in the Mission, it's a vibrant, trendy spot with a fresh and creative menu and excellent drinks. The first time I looked at their menu, I was a bit disappointed that only a few dishes used proteins such as tofu or tempeh, but I did not miss them whatsoever, and thus far have ordered dishes that stuck to beans and lentils. Recently I had the Bowl Dos, which had lentils and mushrooms with peanut sauce, brown rice flecked with coconut, and fresh vegetables. So good!

We had the happy hour nachos, cauliflower tacos, then the entrees were a tamale w/molé and some kind of tofu dish. I thought it was great, very fresh, not loaded with fake cheese. Our server was amazing, she was on her game and very attentive.

Delicious food, service meh - Edit
We tried a lot of dishes and shared them, they were all delicious! The staff was a bit put off by our request for extra plates and when we asked if they would cut the cob of corn into 5, they first brought us a sharp knife, then when we suggested it would be safer if the kitchen did it they said it’s against their policy and would only cut it into 4 just this one time. It was weird. The service in general was slow.

A Big Thud - Edit
This restaurant is extremely popular, organic and vegan. The people are very nice and the portions are ample. However, it is expensive and the food is generally bland. The only really identifiable spice is jalapeño. The dough of the peach cobbler was rubbery and the peaches hard. This is an expensive disappointment.
