Past Time Go-To Spot - Edit
They have relatively good service and most of the dishes are tasty. I will give it 4/5 stars just because it is pricier and the location isn’t the most favorable.

Didn't Meet the Hype - Edit
Sorry Mama, but I don't really get all the hype that 's around Gracias Madre. It was my first stop back in the city on my vegan food adventures and I really wanted to love it more than it actually turned out.
Read moreBeing in the heart of the Mission, the restaurant has a definite hipster aesthetic. Even though the restaurant wasn't busy, it took us a while for them to finally take our orders. Not sure if they were understaffed but it was something we noticed.
We ordered a Sweet Potato Quesadilla ($8) off the lunch menu as well as their Tempeh Chorizo Torta ($15), along with a side of chips ($3) that tasted just like Fritos. The quesadilla came out first and it was honestly underwhelming. It lacked some flavor that we relied on the salsa on our table to kick it up a notch. The torta was decent but the tempeh was nothing noteworthy and the bread was not crispy and toasted like I was used to in most tortas. My partner and I agreed that we had much better vegan Mexican food elsewhere in the Bay.
So it's not a bad spot for food but I likely won't be back. They get a lot of business it seems so they may not really need to improve on their menu, but I hope that it does get better overtime.
Pros: Beautiful interior dining
Cons: Food was underwhelming

Meh - Edit
After hearing the hype about this place for years, I finally checked it out. It was underwhelming. The food was incredibly small portioned; for a person who never finishes their meals, I cleaned my plate and was still hungry. The flavors and textures were not well balanced, nor did it look appealing. I had ordered tamales in mole. I got one tamal and half a plate of salsa and very unappealing looking raw vegetables. For $22. Just. What?

Best Mexican restaurant in the Bay - Edit
Everything about this place is beautiful. Food is amazing, decor makes you feel at home, live music that’s not too distracting, and great service. This was my first time in a full service vegan restaurant and Gracias Madre has set the bar very high!

Looks good, but kind of bland - Edit
Food Looks good, but kind of bland. Not the best Mexican restaurant. For the cost the food wasn’t worth it. Was hoping for more. Margarita was good though.

Classic spot - Edit
It’s a been while since I dined at this location. We decided to stop by while driving through the bay for dinner. I have fond memories of this spot as they were one of the early adopters in creating an all vegan Mexican restaurant concept. The menu has evolved over the years but some classics have remained like the delicious quesadilla de calabaza, and the papas al horno. Both are delicious and a must try. We also ordered the jackfruit tacos which are tasty and satisfying and completed a delicious meal.

Pretty good - Edit
I don’t love Mexican food but my partner really liked this place. We tried the Tamal and Tamal mojado and chips and salsa. I thought my Tamal was going to come with what was described as a tomato habanero sauce on top, which is the only reason I ordered it. I was very disappointed when it was just a plain tamal. They offered to get me something else but I didn’t want it to go to waste. It was ok but didn’t really enjoy it. The salsa verde was good though.

Yum! - Edit
I’ve been here a handful of times and have enjoyed the food each time. However, I am pretty sensitive to spicy food and it seems most dishes here have a kick (or more) to them (which makes sense because it’s authentic Mexican food)! I usually just tough it out and take my acid reflux meds afterwards because the food is too good not to eat lol! The atmosphere is nice and there is both outdoor and indoor seating. Try to come during the off peak hours and you’ll be rewarded by your meal arriving surprisingly quickly!

Best Vegan Mexican you’ll ever find - Edit
This place was absolutely amazing. Not only is it super cute with decor- vegans will want to eat literally everything here. Everything is vegan, everything looks delicious. I personally had the Flautas de Camote and they were divine, and just the right portion size not too big or small. This is a must go if you’re in the area and vegan you’ll want to come back every week.

Never came to take our order - Edit
We let them know we’d arrived and wanted to sit outside (next to another couple that had been served). Someone came out with the menus, then nothing. Left after about 10 minutes to try elsewhere.

Vegan Mexican Eats in SF - Edit
First of all, how is it possible I hadn’t reviewed this place yet? Highly recommend this place for a solo or duo date! It’s cute day and night, I came on a Friday afternoon it wasn’t too busy and was able to score a spot in the outdoor parklet in front of the restaurant. Beautiful for people watching and enjoying a meal while basking in the sunshine. Y’all know me, I’m about the whole experience- decor, music, food, cleanliness. Top rating all around! I ordered the quesadillas de calabazas- yummy with a hint of spice. I also had a mocktail! It was tart but refreshing (La Refrescita). For dessert I ordered the Fruit Cobbler w/cinnamon ice cream! This location is totally bartable and date friendly!

Great idea, like to support, but needs improvement - Edit
A good ambiance, but the service could’ve been better. We got a tiny bowl for the chips and guac appetizer and server refused to give us a bit more chips, or we would have to pay. There was 6 of us and about 2 handfuls of chips (standard eating bowl size).
Read moreIf it was a tiny bit less expensive, it would have been fine. The vegan tamale was good, but a bit bland, as I found myself using their hot sauce(great smoky hot sauce) to compensate. I wish I could wholeheartedly support this place, and it’s great there’s vegan Mexican, but I’ve had better vegan Mexican, I wouldn’t run back here immediately. The margaritas were good!

Amazing food and service, Gracias Madre marries traditional flavours with sustainable and kinder practices. No cruelty in their cuisine, we’ve returned a few times. I came here before I was vegan and I think it was actually the first vegan restaurant I ever ate at. Highly recommend.

Still great food! - Edit
Haven’t been here in a few years due to work and pandemic. But still wonderful. Had sampler appetizer with chips and Mexican hummus, guacamole, and an applesauce. Very good! Had enchiladas and my friend had burrito. Beans and rice with them. All very tasty. I had apple cobbler and my friend had pumpkin tart. Both very tasty. Apples not very well cooked but still tasty. #Veganuary
