Great value and food - Edit
Tried my luck wandering around and found this place. They have an offer for a vegan platter, where you get 2 curries, rice, a dessert, and drink for $12. Was really tasty and filling. Also has a bathroom and free wifi

Easy and casual - Edit
I really like the casual atmosphere of the place. The curry was delicious but a little cold in temperature (I came in the evening). It was very affordable too, especially compared to other veggie restaurants in Melbourne.

Very good value - Edit
Really good value for money, they do platters with rice, two curries and two salads, it says they have roti but we weren’t given roti this time. Some variety to choose from but all from bain marie. Also has dessert. Taste pretty good except sometimes something will be a bit hit and miss for example we got a really salty kofta.

Inexpensive Lunch in the CBD - Edit
Average if adequate plates of pre-produced hot dishes from the Bain Marie. $9.50 vegan lunch plates of (brown) rice, two hot dishes and two salads. Probably the better value of the Hare Krishna enterprises (Crossways - cheap and nasty; Rhadeys - good value for Fitzroy; Mantra - the least-good of the bunch; and Gopals). Nearby Crossways is only $7.50/$6 concession for AYCE, but so stodgy and flavourless, one plate is sufficient. Gopals wins for atmosphere, freshness, healthiness and $ value.
Read moreUnfortunately, like all Hare Krishna-sponsored eateries, the consistency of quality and service is pretty average; and I just tried their ‘soup’, which tasted like a bowl of seawater thickened with lentils (at least, unlike Radhey’s, every 2nd dish isn’t charcoal-flavoured!). Urggghh don’t these chefs *taste* their own products?!
Pros: predominantly vegan, excellent value: large portions, relatively fresh and healthy
Cons: not super-tasty, food quality pretty average, run by patriarchal homophobic religious cult

SO many options - Edit
Gopals has so many amazing options! A place in the city if your looking for a heavy plate for super cheap. You get to pick between two salads & hot plates for around $9! Make it $11 if you want a desert. Quick and easy to pick up if your on you way home or work. Highly recommend

Easy to locate vegetarian restaurant within walking distance from Flinders Street Station, had to climb up stairs but amazing food awaiting, Kofta balls, lentil, salad, chickpeas, lasagna, lassi are our favourites. We usually order sets as it is cheaper.

They have great deals. I got the vegan platter and chose two curries, rice, two salads a dessert and drink all for $11.95. Each thing tasted great and I couldn’t finish it all. The vegan crumble and custard was so tasty. Would definitely recommend!!

affordable lunch option - Edit
Was pretty surprised to see that most of their curries and all salads were vegan, only a few items contained dairy. I went for the 'Not so hungry' plate which had rice, 2curries and 2 salads on it and was only $9,50. The portion size was very generous and I struggled to eat it all (but managed), I did however find the flavour of the dishes way too bland....seeing as it's overall pretty affordable and I only tasted a couple of things I obviously can't speak for all the other options available. Curries and salads can be so much more flavourful though.

Always a Safe Bet - Edit
Although vegetarian and vegan food has evolved a great deal over the years, Gopal’s remains true to its roots, serving simple and tasty vegetarian/vegan dishes for 38 years! Excellent fare for the budget conscious; you buy an “economy special” comprising of 2 curries and a salad for only $8.50. Unbeatable value and good karma too boot.

Super friendly service and great value for money. I always get the not so hungry meal which is more than I can eat. The kofta balls are amazing. Also lots of fresh and delicious salads. If you're there on days they have the apple crumble, do not miss out. Amazing with vegan custard.
