Tasty and affordable

Cafeteria-style. Had like 3 curries to choose from, 5 salads, and a lasagna. The curry was well done, especially the kidney bean one. Filling and inexpensive.

Sincere food at an amazing price

As many others have said here it is incredible value, with multi course meals being like $13.

I really enjoyed everything I had, but the only food I actually noticed was the lentil soup. It was good lentil soup though.

I wonder if they were understaffed tha day. The plate my food was served on was notably dirty from the last person’s meal, I had to wait a few minutes for someone to appear at the counter, and the bench where everyone left the dirty dishes was overflowing from a couple of hours of plates. But it isn’t really that big a negative

Great value!

We tried the lasagne special (vegan lasagne and 2 salads), feast meal (rice, 2 salads, 2 curries, drink and dessert), and a bean croquette.

The food had great flavours - the bean croquette with green sauce and the homemade lemonade were winners.
The kofta and pasta salad were a little dry.
Overall, great value yummy food.

The restaurant has a calm vibe.

Pros: Delicious bean croquette, Refreshing home-made lemonade, Inexpensive meals

Cheap and hearty food

$12.50 for the vegan platter got me a very full plate of two salads, rice and two curries. Plus a small dessert with vegan custard and a drink. Buffet style layout for the food (served by staff) so no wait. While not fine dining it was tasty and filling. It’s up a narrow set of stairs so not very accessible for people whose mobility is impaired.

Pros: Cheap , Good range of vegan options , Good portions

Amazing prices

Casual buffet restaurant with different formulas. I went with the vegan platter (only 12,50) which included rice, 2 curries, two salads, dessert and a drink. The food was good and it's a great spot for cheap vegan food.

Well priced wholesome meal

My vegan dinner consisted of a tasty tofu and veggie curry and big crispy salad, semolina based dessert and lassi. It was flavoursome and fresh. Healthy dinner for a great price. The restaurant is clean and airy and altogether super pleasant relaxing space. Will be coming back for sure!

Pros: Fresh crispy salads, Many food choices , Nice interior

Cons: No

Disappointing lasagne

I've been wanting to try the vegan lasagne for awhile and finally it was in stock.
Sadly it was BARELY lukewarm, and had a noticeable capsicum taste throughout (blergh). It was really nice and cheesy though.
The samosa was tasty and hot.

Cons: Lasagne barely warm

Big portions and cheap

So many options, lots of comfort foods and always delicious. It is vegetarian though so be sure to check for the vegan marked options.

tried and true

How is it that I haven't reviewed Gopals yet?! It was the first vegetarian restaurant I ever visited in Melbourne, back when I was in high school and caught the train down from the country in Y2K! As a poor, teenage vegetarian, I loved the feast plates, especially the halva. Now the halva is vegan and they have soy custard too! I haven't seen my favourite spiced date and oat slice there for a long time though. I miss that.

Now I work nearby and the vegan lasagna special with 2 salads for $12.50 is my go-to if I forget my lunch or don't have time to prep. The lasagna has nice creamy bechamel and roasted pumpkin. There's usually about half a dozen salads to choose from and they're always fresh and crisp, served with zesty French or nutty tahini dressing. I'm not a huge fan of the curries, due to the strong asafoetida flavour, obiquetus in Hari Krishna cuisine! I do sometimes enjoy the $10 "not so hungry" special but I choose a double portion of kofta, instead of another veggie dish, served with rich sweet tomato sauce, rice, and salad.

Old school vego!

This place has really stood the test of time, which really says something!

The malai kofta balls and samosas are the highlights.

Food is a little under seasoned, I find.

Cheap and affordable. The different "plates" allow you try a lot of different dishes.

The menu is vegetarian/mostly vegan aside from the lasagna and maybe one or two other dishes.

Pros: cheap/affordable, lots of options

The lasagna has been vegan for a while now! I think the only thing that isn't is the spinach and cheese pie. And they have both dairy and soy custard.

Cheap & wholesome

Very cheaply priced for what you get. Curries were delicious, rice was perfect. Just the salads were a bit lacking in flavour & crunch

Fresh and healthy food at a reasonable price

This place is along the busy Swanston Street where there is a lot of pedestrian traffic. There is a small entry that leads to stairs that go to the second floor. There is also more seating on the third floor. The prices are really good with the most expensive option being the "Feast Platter" which is $13.50 which has a lot of food. You can select which curry dishes and salads you want, what type of sauces you want etc. Some of the food is not vegan eg the mango lassi that was sold had dairy in it, but the labelling is clear so there shouldn't be any mistakes. The food seems very fresh and healthy. #Veganuary

Pros: Excellent value for money , Tasty, fresh and healthy food

Cons: Not everything vegan

My go-to place in Melbourne

Gopals has been serving up consistently great food for so many years that it's my most-visited eatery in the CBD. With clearly-marked and varied vegan dishes, and the vegan platter at $12.50 (2 curries, 2 salads, rice, dessert and a drink) you can't go wrong.

Pros: Large portions, Consistently tasty dishes, Excellent value

Cons: Stairs can be an issue for people with mobility pr

Amazing value

I had the vegan platter with two veggie curries, rice and some salads. It also comes with a drink and a dessert. The curries were flavoursome and the salads added freshness. The dessert was unassuming but really tasty. A date halva. It would be incredible if the mango lassi drink option was vegan. Otherwise a great place, glad I was finally able to visit.

Pros: So cheap , Vegetarian business , Tasty food

Salads get you 5 stars

Here you can get a decent portion of curries and salad for a bargain price.

Probably didn’t need that second plate at Crossways anyway…
