Wow... what a place.

I was a bit surprised by the formal dining-hall style of this place, as I'd expected something smaller. Large picture menu and the place just oozes character and history. A bit hard to navigate with only English, but not impossible with a bit of patience. Note that, as with many nicer Chinese veg restaurants, there is a huge variation in dish prices... from 20 RMB to 200, depending on the item and rarity. There are more affordable and filling options, some towards the back, but you need to look for them. Within walking distance of both Tiananmen and Temple of Heaven.

Pros: Vast menu, Reliable quality, Historic

Cons: Super pricey, Highly formal service

Great place

A popular and well established vegetarian restaurant. I had three dishes - sesame cakes, a tofu dish and a vegie dish - which left me very full and happy. They were all great. The price was ok - I paid 85 rmb in total. The menu has pictures.

Pros: Delicious, High-quality

Good food in a nice restaurant

We had our evening meal here. The staff were friendly and they spoke enough English to get by. We had a small meal but it was very good. It was a bit pricey.

Pros: good food, friendly service

Cons: expensive

Great food but expensive

I was here in September 2011. The place is very nice looking on the inside. Like almost all of the vegetarian establishments in China it is Buddhist. They have a nice colorful menu with pictures of various dishes. The quality of the food is remarkable. The downside is that it's fairly expensive. Vegetarian food should not be that expensive, especially in China, but these places tend to be a ripoff because they know there are not many dining options for vegetarians. Overall, would definitely recommend.

Pros: excellent food

Cons: expensive

Classic good-quality restaurant

Classical Chinese vegetarian restaurant, oldest in town. Be sure to check that you have the new address of the restaurant as it has quite recently moves: http://www.beijingimpression.com/restaurant/Gongdelin-vegetarian-restaurant-Beijing.shtml (this is the new venue)

Chinese style furniture and decoration, peaceful atmosphere and friendly staff. Large menu with lots of mockmeat dishes, but also salads etc.

Tested this with meat-eater and he also liked what he got. "Meat pie" was delicious.

Enjoyed the food

A large menu, lively atmosphere and the dtaff were generally friendly. I had the steak pieces as a starter which was big enough for 2 and then a spicy chicken dish for the main which was good but too many peppers- I guess that was the spicy part!

With rice and drink came to 90 Yuan so not that expensive at all. About a 5 minute walk from Chongwenmen metro station south west exit.

Don't make (or maintain) 'em like they used to...

The menu at Gongdelin does include some above-average veggie fare, but whether it's "better enough" to justify the far above average prices is debatable, especially considering its below-average service.

I spent much of my meal contemplating how far Gongdelin seems to have fallen from its noble origins - apparently founded by venerated spiritualist out of great compassion, but now peddling cheap beer without a trace of mindfulness or a hint of a smile.

I felt it was worth going once as a field study in the vegetarian history of China, and the tasty food rewarded my curiosity, but i doubt i'd return. If you want high-end, try Pure Lotus, and if you want equal-or-better food with much better service for lower prices, try Tianchu Miaoxiang Vegetarian in Chaowai.

Pros: Some above-average veggie fare, Reasonably pleasing aesthetics

Cons: Apathetic service, Surprisingly high prices

Great Spicy "Chicken"

The menu is enormous, and includes English. The food is really good, but somewhat pricey. The cheapest entree would be around 39 yuan, but specialties were around 160 yuan. The staff is not very enthusiastic, but it is a beautiful restaurant. We would go there again.

Pros: Good Food, Many choices, Nice atmosphere

Cons: Somewhat expensive, Disinterested staff

Excellent wallnut/Aubergine dish

Excellent wallnut/Aubergine dish
I first ate in Gong Delin when I was in Beijing in 1990. At that time it was a bitter disappointment as the desinterested state company it was. Since the Qianmen waidajie has been de/up?graded in a chique boulevard. The original Gong De Lin has now moved to the 前门东大街(qianmendongdajie)corner祈年大街。It still has a bit of the old state company flavour. But the dishes are mostly good.
Ther should be more "non mockmeat" dishes on the menu. And why not ask a real musician to play.

Pros: On mockmeats excellent, Some some good general dishes

Cons: Desinterested waiters, Noisy canned music
