Goan For Gold

On discovering the menu for this rather unique place, I was incredibly excited to try a variation on the standard Indian cuisine to which I have become so accustomed and that I so adore. An out-of-the-box, but pressed right up alongside it kind of experience, if you will. Of course, this was tinged with a slight air of trepidation. Due to the sheer volume of phenomenal subcontinental eateries in the city, it could easily have fallen woefully short by comparison. But, being optimistic (and hungry), this was a chance I was willing to take, and I was richly rewarded for it.
In fact, the only slight question mark that hung over the meal lay with the Goan curry. Certainly not a disaster by any means, but there was an unmistakable twang to it that was hard to ignore and that ultimately left me slightly bemused as to whether or not it was pleasant or merely tolerable.
This puzzling foible aside, the rest of the meal was a triumph. The xacuti curry was complex in flavour and unlike anything else I have had before; the amboli was another mini revelation in bread form, and both the rices were superb and could quite easily be eaten without embellishment.
It was the array of starters, however, that stole the show. Picking a favourite from the three would be a fool’s errand; each had their own numerous merits, and I was only mildly peeved at the fact that I hadn’t doubled down on ordering more.
An (almost) entirely blemish-free jaunt to the culinary delights of this region here has left me with little doubt that I’ll be making a repeat trip for more.
