Nice for a morning stroll - Edit
The market is big and full of (expensive) veggies (I visited on Saturday morning). The location is beautiful and the stands are all around the main ferry building, perfect on a sunny day.
Read moreMy favourite stand (by far) was Marin Gourmet, a vegan labelled hummus and dips small business generously offerings all their flavours to taste. I bought the chimichurri and the fire roasted eggplant dip (DELICIOUS!). But the rest of the market lacked exciting stalls.

The Chef's Farmers Market - Edit
This is the fanciest, biggest, most glorious farmer's market in the city. I find it hard to stop here for less than an hour, and you're sure to see a famous chef doing the shopping for that evening's upscale dinner crafted from fresh organic local seasonal heirloom (did I mention expensive?) produce. With ~40 produce stands, there's a wide range, from humble and affordable to super-gourmet, and if it's in season in California you are certain to find it here. There are also ~10 prepared food stands for snacking as you browse, along with a handful of miscellany, such as bakeries, fresh pasta, and meat.
Read moreThe view of the bay is also a highlight, as is the historic ferry building itself around which the market is clustered. Inside the building are permanent stands with additional options for produce and nibbles, as well as Sur La Table if you need extra kitchen implements for your creation, so if you're willing to spend $$ it's a one-stop shop.
It's easily accessible by ferry or public transit on land; I wouldn't recommend the hassle of parking if you can avoid it although they do advertise valet service. The market also provides conveniences such as carts for big shoppers, a way to buy tokens all vendors accept with a credit card, and maps of the stands.
It's a don't-miss California experience!
PS. In front of the food market, heading towards Market Street, people have set up an informal crafts market with jewelry, artwork and other handmade items you may also find interesting.

Great Market; Good Tamales - Edit
This is a great farmer's market with a wide range of seasonal, organic produce. Be sure to check out Donna's tamales - they are all either vegetarian or vegan. You purchase them hot and ready to eat; there is also a wide range of salsa's and condiments for a topping.

Farmers Market - Edit
I happened to run in to this place and decided to get some fresh fruit for snacks later in the evening. I thought this farmer's market was very pricey, they were charging almost $5 a pound for grapes, my goodness! Go to Whole Foods instead.

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market - Edit
This farmers market is located in front of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero at the foot of Market Street. It occurs three days a week: Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-2, and Saturdays 8-2. The Saturday market is larger, most of the offerings are organic and local, and there are cooking demos with recipes available on Saturdays.
