Awe-inspiring - Edit
What a buzz it is to be seated during midday rush hour lunchtime with around 300 other diners!
Read moreHumble, simple and plentiful food on offer. Lots of staff and volunteers make sure that the dining hall is well catered to and served promptly, by the mere fact that the buffet area is well distributed and constantly replenished.
The dining area is way off at the back of the Buddhist temple, from the outside gate check for the number 161 mounted on a plaque one right-hand side of the gated entrance.
Pros: Inexpensive, Nutritional, Mostly vegan

So good! - Edit
Grab a plate and load it up with about 20 different options. I don't really know how the pricing works, but I piled my plate high with a little bit of everything and I got a drink and it cost 10RM. Everything was fantastic, especially the curry and what I think was sweet and sour seitan.

Just amazing - Edit
Before I set off for Kuala Lumpur, I was slightly concerned about the lack of plant based food. As in my own experience, Asian countries consume a lot of animal products and nearly everything has animals in it too. So to find this place was genuinely amazing. The place itself is situated behind a Buddhist temple. The food itself was the best I ate In KL. The price was also the cheapest I've eaten while in KL. Nothing else to say other than, just go there and enjoy the food.

The best food in KL - Edit
Okay, so first the temple is beautiful as you walk around to the back where the cafeteria is. There are so many dishes to choose from and you can fill your plate as much as you like. Everything is vegan and super delicious. We visited this place more than 5 times on our trip. You HAVE to go here!!

Veg heaven - Edit
First, logistics - Google maps tried to lead me astray down a side alley. You just go in the main entrance to the monastery and take the left-most corridor; you’ll dead end straight into the canteen. I went early (just after 11) to avoid crowds and it was pleasantly quiet and empty except for a handful of people. Grab a plate or a plastic take-out container and serve yourself from a marvelous variety of dishes. Lots of dishes have mock meat and/or tofu, but there are also plenty without. I may have gotten a little carried away thanks to a well-meaning fellow customer who kept telling me I *had* to try certain things, including desserts (which are priced a la carte), and ended up spending close to 20 ringets. However, the stash of 2 takeout containers full of food, 2 sesame coated filled donut ball thingies, and 3 peanut cookies (I was coerced, I swear) lasted me for 2 meals. I’m sure I could have gotten in and out of there for about half the price, but no regrets, everything was delicious!

My favorite place in KL 🏆 - Edit
If this place would be open whole day I would definitely eat every meal at there. This is my favorite place, food is amazing, everything is so delicious, people are incredibly polite, their perspective of vegetarianism/veganism is so clear, clean, cheap and lots of options everyday! It's better to go there before 12pm because of lunch break it gets really crowded sometimes they run out of food around 13pm. And if you want take away better to bring your own container. Desserts, breads, buns and drinks are also available.

Compassionate, loving food for an amazing price - Edit
What an experience. It was really exciting choosing from the gazillion dishes. I had no idea what I was eating but that was the fun of it. You don’t get the chance to do that as a vegan often. My plate was 10 ringgit. I had 2 spring rolls, some noodles and a couple of tofu dishes. Oh and I also had a vegetable which unfortunately I really disliked (I later learnt that this was bitter melon!) however I forced it down with respect for the eat-everything-on-your-plate mentality. The hall was bustling with locals, many of whom appeared to be on their lunch break from work. I was sat opposite a board which had dharma quotes, vegetarianism information and recycling posters. It felt so good to eat in this place. Definitely go and check it out.
Read moreI’m not sure if this is 100% vegan. There were some doughnuts and sweets for sale but I didn’t ask.

Good for cheap vegan food! - Edit
A massive vegan buffet that gets very busy at lunchtime with locals. It's great to see so many hundreds of people all eating 100% vegan food!
Read moreIt is very cheap although there is definitely a savvy way of doing it - we wanted to try a few things first and then go up for more but you seem to get charged per item you put on your plate so you may as well load up. That said, they do have a strong ethos of not wasting food so make sure you take only what you will eat.
An interesting environment seeing the food being prepared. We enjoyed coming here although a lot of the food is very oily and fried and they go mad for the mock meats which I'm not a massive fan of.
Pros: Cheap, Interesting atmosphere, Big variety of food
Cons: No aircon, Oily food, Pricing seems a bit haphazard depending on cashier

huge buffet - and all vegan!! - Edit
This was one of the biggest (vegan) buffets I have ever seen. All fresh and homemade. You can even see people peeling and cutting vegetables next to the sitting area. The food is so good and cheap. They have everything from noodles, fried stuff, mock meats and curries to fruit, greens, pastries and sweets. Absolutely recommend! I came here every day of my trip! They also have a really good attitude about food waste and mindfulness. Definitely appreciated.

Amazing variety of tasty vegan dishes - Edit
This is a huge and very popular buffet behind the Chinese temple (go in the main entrance and follow the corridor on the left). Probably 30 dishes of Chinese veggie and tofu dishes with rice, and cooked to order noodles, and a wide selection of fresh fruits available. It appears that you pay by the number of things you choose, not by weight - we loaded up our plates with a bit of everything and the cashier squinted at our plates and charged us 8 ringgit each. We left full and very happy!

It may be right for you - Edit
I have passed through twice (stubborn?) and not found anything I was willing to eat. I have been vegan 40 years, in part for my own health. These oily, fried, gloppy, and multiple-ly tainted foods have left their vegetable origins behind. I concede that this is characteristic of food in the region, but I do not view it as a necessity. I wish them well, since they do support the vegetarian cause.

Local, cheap, lots of options - Edit
If you’re pinching your pennies and need a hearty vegan meal while in KLCC then this is your place. Grab a plate, get in line and load your plate with all sorts of Asian dishes (noodles, rice, fake meats, veggies). Decent food guaranteed to fill you up but don’t expect a fine dining experience. This place can be packed and you’ll need to find a spot at one of the crowded tables and get cozy with other patrons. Don’t forget to clean off your own plate into the giant scrap bins at the end.

When compassion prevails over business - Edit
Working in the area, I probably have an average of 2.5 weekly visits to the monastery since I discovered it over a year ago.
Read moreIt is clear that the aim here is not to accumulate wealth but simply to provide fairly priced and healthy cruelty-free meals to as many people as possible.
I love this feeling of being surrounded by so many considerate beings all eating together in a large hall, sharing long tables and sitting on rustic stools, people are smiling and everyone seems more mindful of their neighbors.
To sum it up, Dharma Realm Guan Yin Sageli Monastery really feels like a haven of peace and compassion in the middle of the bustling city that is Kuala Lumpur.
Note: If you are planning to eat at the Monastery for the first time, maybe aim to get there before the noon rush in order to benefit from the full range of choice with a smaller wait time.
Pros: atmosphere, cheapest place around (by far), friendly staff
