Good Monday option - Edit
I’d heard about this for years and was excited to finally visit while I was in town for work. As a bonus, it was pretty much the only place open on a monday night. The calamari and hasselback potato were both great, and the fried chicken and lava cake were good, as well as the cocktails. The overall experience was good and I’d recommend it, but for the price, Vedge is better.

Good food, poor service - Edit
We started out with the potato croquettes, which were phenomenal, and then it was downhill from there. The bao buns were next best, and then we felt the lamb, sweet potato, taco, and drinks were pretty average. Service was rather poor, which put a damper on the experience. With all the amazing vegan restaurants in philly, we will probably not come back to this place.

Went here a few years ago. It was an amazing place. The scene is very inviting with great food, workers, drinks and a close romantic dining setting. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to have a great dining experience with drinks.

Excellent food in Quaint Environment - Edit
Visiting for business, we seek out 100% vegan restaurants with gluten-free options such as “Charlie was a sinner”. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that they provide a separate gluten-free menu. We tried the castelvetrano olives & red grapes(yum), the ricotta with crudités (excellent), and the sautéed chard with massaman curry (absolutely delicious). And we had a great time with Gwen our server. She totally helped make our visit to the restaurant fun and light-hearted.

Cozy vegan cocktails and more - Edit
Great food but it's really a special place like an old fashioned cocktail lounge. Really intimate and welcome in a time where everything looks like a chain (even if it isn't!) Great cocktail menu and plenty of food options to suit everyone. The aged cashew cheese (camembert maybe?) was a real highlight. The Korean tofu was also excellent.

Best vegan food I've ever had - Edit
I've eaten vegan food all over the country, and Charlie Was a Sinner has by far the absolute best food I've ever had. The meatballs and ricotta were delicious, and the zucchini "crabcake" sliders were perfect and the atmosphere was wonderful. Small and cozy, the service was great as well. I really can't hype this place up enough. And, the prices were incredibly reasonable, I was blown away!

Food was good, server was unpleasant - Edit
If I could do 2-1/2 stars that's a better indication. I love small plates restaurants and we were prepared to dig on but our waiter clearly made up his mind he wasn't going to like us, and we decided after the first course to go elsewhere.

Dark and snug - Edit
Metered Street parking or garage parking. Busy area. Lots of food choices around but this is a great Began spot. I started with caramelized eggplant bao buns and wow was that a great choice to start with. Packed a nice little kick. Serving size of three buns. I asked for help choosing between Charlie house fries and potato croquettes. They w was no hesitation and so the potato croquettes were next. Crispy on the outside. Fluffy on the inside. Delicious. I moved into the oyster mushroom fried “calamari”. The crispy kale was crispy … I may have waited to long for the “calamari” because it wasn’t as crispy. It was still good. Worth trying again. I finished my meal with the Turkish “lamb” kofta. It was good but much smaller than I expected (two baby skewers). Very much worth your time and I am looking forward to coming back here again

Tasty, fresh and fast - Edit
The staff was Friendly & accommodating despite us being a little high maintenance. We had a rez, left cause it was too cramped, crowded and noisy, so they put us on the list to get the next outdoor table. The table was right next to the road, like I mean 1 ft from the cars passing by & my guy wanted to go back in, so they gave us a little spot in the front corner, which was pretty peaceful comparatively. We Had the Artichoke Frites, Zucchini Crab Cakes, and the potato Gnocchi and meatballs. Great, except the artichokes tasted like nothing, so did the dipping sauce and the batter/fried outer bit. Gnocchi was delicious with slivered fennel and tomato and some kind of cream sauce, but the meatballs were impossible, which I dislike (raised veg, so not interested in realistic faux meat) The slider was delish! Love when things are original and made from veggies. It came with some house made chips. Tasty, but slightly overdone and unevenly salted.

Didn’t live up to my expectations - Edit
To be fair, we got takeout because of Covid to eat in a park, and I don’t think all the sauces and presentation really traveled well. That said, I have been really hyped about this restaurant and eager to try it, and no one in the family really loved any of the dishes. Exciting menu descriptions, but the actual items fell flat. We got the tamal, spicy fries, mezze, Mac and cheese.

Meh? - Edit
The foods we had were all... alright? Nothing was exceptional and the atmosphere was just constant loud chatter with all the tables packed close together. There are better, less packed vegan restaurants in the city at the same price point, or even cheaper. The grilled asparagus dish came with three spears of asparagus.

Overhyped, but fine - Edit
The quality of ingredients and preparation was just not what I expected. All meats were Beyond and a few ingredients I tried tasted like they were out of a can. Also really salty food. Didn’t try the cocktails though and they looked pretty good. Judge for yourself…

Very disappointed as the reviews looked really positive. - Edit
We made a reservation to have dinner last night at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Upon arrival the restaurant was completely empty we were seated all the way in the back. They have a nice ambience but the kerosene lamps that are on every table makes for an overwhelming chemical smell. They seem to take issue with us removing them from our table. However we ordered multiple dishes including potato Croquettes, Caesar salad Mack and cheese, sourdough bread with ricotta sliders and some sort of a eggplant in a bun sandwich. The only real flavor that was present was salt. If it hadn't been for the high price it wouldn't have been quite as frustrating. My overall estimation of this place is if you drink alcohol and you enjoy well-made bar drinks then you probably won't care after several that the food is mediocre at best. Unfortunately none of us drink lol.

Please improve the taste of the food💗 - Edit
Never want to drag a vegan place, whatever you eat make sure it isn't violence! Watch the documentary Dominion free on YouTube. But if you're not vegan, please don't base your opinion of non-violent food based on this place! There are so many amazing tasting vegan food places out there, this in my opinion is not one of them- very expensive for bland food that could easily be delicious with some adjustments, I hope for the animals' sake they improve their food! Let's just say Daiya Mac and cheese would taste better than theirs lol. Their ricotta had zero flavor, add some dang lemon juice, garlic, and salt to it at least. The sliders use beyond meat. One of those small plate places you have to get at least three plates to be full. The drinks are super delicious though so it would be a great option for that! I did not try the desserts so maybe those are good! Ambiance is cool looking! These are just my opinions perhaps you will love it!

love it here!! it has a very swanky and sleek vibe with dim lighting and plush red velvet chairs, which is fun because most vegan restaurants don’t have that vibe! the food is great, but the portions are pretty small and it is expensive. it’s perfect for a date night or special occasion!

Really great. It is tapas-style, smaller portions for sharing. The Mediterranean Board was delicious: The cheese fooled the non-veg people I was with. So rich and full of flavor. Potato croquettes, fried mushroom "calamari," sliders--all fantastic. The ramen was a bit spicy for our daughter, but still quite good.
