Art-Isan It Was Not - Edit
Thanks to my visits to TimeOut Market, I had become acutely aware of what this restaurant's potential could be. So, in placing this order, my expectations were high. Perusing the menu did little to dampen my enthusiasm, as the breadth of options here in comparison to their sister location was discernible. Fully ready to be blown away, I merely hoped that I wasn’t being too ambitious in anticipating excellence. No sooner had I torn the first bag asunder than I began to suspect that I had indeed been overzealous in my supposition.
Read moreThe cause of my initial consternation was the portion sizes. While not minuscule, they were more petite than I would have hoped for, especially given the comparatively hefty price tag.
When it came to the eating, this too fell short of the mark on nearly every front. Again, it was far from terrible, but it certainly could have been better. The Tom Kha soup was passable without being great; likewise, the curries attained a similar, mediocre grading, while The Hustler, a street-style fried tofu dish, was probably just about the best of a so-so bunch when it came to the main components of the meal.
One offering that bordered on dismal was the Som Tum salad. Bright and fresh in appearance, this facade soon crumbled upon sampling as it conspired to leave a peculiar, almost acrid aftertaste in the mouth.
However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. There was salvation to be found in the form of the side dishes, two of which were worthy of lavish praise: the garlic cabbage and the Khao Pad. The former of these was easily the best part of the order and in pleased me greatly that this was the case as I am ardent fan of this particular vegetable as when it’s done right, it’s glorious.
Sadly, this was not quite the phenomenal banquet for which I had wished. Perhaps something was lost in translation with this being a takeaway; it definitely wasn’t the quality to which I had become accustomed when sampling their wares in situ. For this reason, this is likely to be the only time I deign to undertake this endeavour.
