Best Pizza in Portland - Edit
Not only is this the best "vegan" pizza I've ever tasted, but it's actually the best pizza I've ever tasted period. My mouth is watering just thinking about it it. And the staff is very friendly and accommodating. The vibe is really welcoming. I would definitely go here again and again and again.

I have only had Detroit Pizza one other time and happened to be vegan. It was alright when I had it then. I have been to Detroit where the talented rapper Eminem is from. Detroit is where the pinball like running back legend Detroit Lion Barry Sanders played. Detroit is where I was in awe when I saw the Diego Rivera murals there. Detroit isn't known for it's pizza yet lately Detroit pizza seems to be getting popular.
Detroit Pizza is like a cross between Sicilian and Chicago deep dish yet comes in a square with four slices.
Boxcar Pizza was named best vegan pizza this past year in Veg News magazine so had great expectations coming here.
Boxcar Pizza delivered! I went with the Viktor Vaughn pizza. The pizza came with mozzarella, cheddar, kale, red onions, ricotta, mama lil's peppers, and pesto. I got it with a side of red sauce for dipping which I recommend.
The pizza was very tasty. Plenty of flavor. It was a bit rich and filling for plenty of vegan cheese was used. Perhaps a touch less vegan cheese and other pizza pies with more veggies would be nice.
I like that this pizza had plenty of veggies on it. I just got this and was able to eat it all. Each pizza serves one to two depending on your appetite. If you come with a friend or spouse might be good to split one and order a Kale Caesar salad to share.
Viktor Vaughn is the real name of Dr. Doom who happens to be the arch enemy of the Fantastic Four in the Marvel Comics. Viktor Vaughn is also a British rapper.
There are many different kinds of pizza here and am so happy that a vegan pizza place delivers tasty vegan pizza. I hope they open up branches in other cities.

How does one put into words the sheer brilliance of flavors, textures, mouth feel, and joy that Boxcar Pizza embodies? Every pie we’ve had from here is perfect. Favorites are the bianca (add pepperoni if you want a real treat), bacon damn sure, map change, and Jimmy Pesto. We usually get two pizzas and can only eat one slice of each leaving us another exciting meal for later! We love the wings, the Caesar salad, and the cheesy bread too. Pay attention to the specials because they are almost always incredible; pizza topped grilled peaches with hot “honey” or blackberry basil or how about the buddy’s cheesesteak special or the bbq jalapeño bacon cheeseburger pizza?!? A completely different experience of pizza, Detroit style crispy melted cheese edges on dense flakey almost focaccia crust, but they have become our favorite place and a weekly staple now. If you drink, the whiskey bar Paydirt next door is also great mixed with the pizza😉

Read moreBut woah...filling. We got the cheese bread, Bianca, and the Jimmy Pesto...for two people...and that was not a good idea. Way too much food for us, but at least we have lunch for tomorrow. We could only manage two slices each. Super thick and super decadent. Absolutely worth every penny, especially considering we get two-three meals out of it! Go there now!

Ideal pizza experience - Edit
I ordered a salad and pizza in-store at a kiosk, to-go. Parking was pretty easy (street parking along both sides of the street), and the restaurant wasn't busy, although it was also only 4pm. Super lowkey and friendly employees. I will order any vegan Cesar I see, and this one had an incredible dressing that stood up to the kale.

We shared the strings of nashville pizza and the bacon jalapenos cheesy bread and they were both so good. Pretty big protions, we kept half of it for lunch (really happy about that) I'm visiting Portland and I definitely want to come back before leaving to try other things!!! A must in Portland, whether you're vegan or not!

Read moreMy main complaint is that the cheeses all seem to made in-house except the cheddar really overwhelmed the pizza and tasted just like daiya. And all of their pizzas are really heavy - it would be nice to have one pizza a bit more veggie heavy.

We were wowed by this pizza! My husband and I shared the Bianca and an order of buffalo wings for dinner. The Bianca was so delicious. It's hard to even describe the cheesy goodness. You just have to try it! The wings were fine, fairly realistic and had a lot of spice, but they were really messy and I don't think I loved wings all that much back before going vegan. I wouldn't order the wings again when those incredible pizzas are available. I can't wait to try more of the pizzas! The people working at Boxcar were super nice, and we loved the indoor/outdoor dog-friendly patio area that is shared by all the businesses in the Zipper building. You could easily order from multiple places in the building, including a cocktail bar, and eat at the shared tables.

There are a bunch of vegan pizza options in Portland, but Boxcar is #1 in my book! The people are friendly and enthusiastic about helping you make menu choices. The outdoor seating area is lovely and the pizza and wings are outstanding!

It’s served on a thick crust which to me almost seems like a focaccia bread. (I’ve never had Detroit style pizza before.) It was delicious!

Extremely tasty and indulgent pizza. It bakes in a tall pan, and there’s a ring of crispy cheese all around the pizza. However, the star is the house-made gluten free crust—just OUTSTANDING. It has the texture, rise, and airiness of focaccia, which I haven’t found anywhere else. (Please start selling gluten free focaccia.) Fast, friendly service, loud music. The pizza is filling, so plan to share it!

Creative Detroit-Style - Edit
Cute place with loud music playing, nice employees and incredibly fluffy dough with delicious mozzarella cheese. We got a Nashville one with fried chik’n, pickles, and ranch. It looked overcooked on the outside but when bitten into wash delicious and perfectly baked. Note- individual slices only sold on weekdays.
